Hellfire is actually an acronym for Heliborne, Laser, Fire and Forget Missile and it was developed in the US initially to target tanks from the Apache AH-64 attack helicopters. For several years now, the Hellfire family of missiles, including the ‘Ninja Missile’, are armed on Combat Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or drones that the US Military uses in offensive military operations around the world. It has also been used against Taliban targets in Afghanistan in 2020 and again in 2022. Also known as the ‘Ninja Missile’, this weapon does not carry a warhead and instead deploys razor-sharp blades at the terminal stage of its attack trajectory. It is a variant of the original Hellfire missile family which is used in conventional form with warheads and is traditionally used from helicopters, ground-based vehicles, and sometimes small ships and fast moving vessels. The Hellfire 9RX missile is known to have been in active service since 2017.

With a rifle in the background and making a chopping motion with his hand, he promised that bin Laden would continue to “terrify” America. “Blood for blood,” he said. In the following decade, US pursued bin Laden and al-Zawahiri. Drone strikes decimated Qaida’s leadership. With his white turban and dense, grey beard, his forehead marked by the bruising prized by some Muslims as denoting piety from frequent prayer, alZawahiri had little of bin Laden’s charisma.
Ayman-Al-Jawahiri Killed:

It added that Zawahiri's ties to leaders of the Haqqani network "led US intelligence officials to the safe house" where he was hiding. "There was a renewed effort to figure out where he was," the report quoted former CIA officer Mick Mulroy as saying. The Al-Qaeda leader was killed by a Hellfire missile, which is "designed to kill a single person." He remained on the balcony for extended periods, which gave the CIA a good chance to target him." "Analysts eventually identified a figure who lingered on the balcony reading, but never left the house, as al-Zawahiri," the NYT report said. "In al-Zawahri's case, his long balcony visits gave the agency an opportunity for a clear missile shot that could avoid collateral damage," it said.

An official claimed that al-Zawahiri was the only person killed in the strike and that none of his family members was injured. Zawahiri was raised in Cairo’s leafy Maadi suburb, a place favoured by expatriates from the Western nations he railed against. By then he was living the spartan life of a militant after helping Bin Laden to form al Qaeda. Zawahiri did not emerge from Cairo’s slums, like others drawn to militant groups who promised a noble cause. Instead, militancy returned to its roots in local-level conflicts, driven by a mix of local grievances and incitement by transnational jihadi networks using social media. US officials said the attack took place on Sunday in the Afghan capital Kabul. Taking over the leadership of Islamic Jihad in Egypt in 1993, Zawahiri was a leading figure in a campaign in the mid-1990s to overthrow the government and set up a purist Islamic state.
