But the gags don’t really land, the comic touches feel forced, and a contrived sequence or two becomes annoying in a film which is otherwise so aware of its characters and their motivations. Post-interval, in a bid to lighten the ‘heavy’ topic of domestic abuse, the film starts to build on its black comedy aspect. We see a woman using whatever she has to keep her head above the water, the hard grind she has had to go through to raise her daughter single-handedly only mentioned in passing. The other powerful act is from Shefali Shah. As Shamsu, mother to Badru, she extends full support to her daughter, but she is not just a door-stopper. It is a toxic world, but it is theirs, and till the time we stay with the back-and-forth between them, the film holds us. On that score, Alia Bhatt and Vijay Varma are spot on, as the beautifully-written Badru and Hamza, whose ‘love marriage’ a few years down the line becomes a cyclical series of beatings followed by apologies.

Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah-starrer 'Darlings' to release on Netflix today (Business Today)

'Darlings' is special as it not only marks Bhatt's production debut but also her foray into the world of OTT.

Here’s how to identify toxic femininity traits..👇 #DarlingsOnNetflix( #AliaBhattfirst film as producer) shamelessly preaches husband torture on the name of dark humour. The film focuses on the story of a mother-daughter duo who are faced with unusual circumstances. #BoycottDarlings became the hot topic on Twitter as users said Alia Bhatt's upcoming film is misandrist or aimed at promoting male-bashing. They said it promotes domestic violence against men. It further appears that Bhatt's character has been facing domestic violence and is determined to exact revenge on her husband, played by Varma. The two-minute 34-second trailer shows Alia Bhatt and Shefali Shah lodging a missing complaint for Vijay Varma.

'Darlings' review: A dark comedy with sparkling performances (Scroll.in)

Jasmeet K Reen directs Alia Bhatt, Vijay Varma, Shefali Shah and Roshan Mathew.

Not for the first time is a film about a late-blooming heroine memorable because of the thorn in her side. In a narrative that’s leans in the direction of fantasy, Hamza is the real article. The central role is tailor-made for Alia Bhatt, who has an irrepressible spirit and a flair for light comedy. Any risk of trivialising the brutalisation of women by men is kept at bay by Vijay Verma’s superbly judged Hamza. Darlings has both laugh-out-loud comedy and supressed giggles. Absurdist and often hilarious situations result from Badru-Shamshu’s masterplan, which plays out in the presence of the permanently exasperated police officer Rajaram (Vijay Maurya). The off-kilter worldview of Darlings begins at the title itself.

As one user tweeted, “Everyone should #BoycottAliaBhatt for making a misandrist movie like Darlings. For Bollywood, domestic violence against men is a matter of joke. A user tweeted, “Thousands of male victims were traumatised after watching the trailer of Alia Bhatt's movie Darlings.” The movie deals with a serious subject with a dark comedy undertone without it being insensitive on the matter. The similarity was revealed by Varma in a recent interaction. For a section of people, the movie seems to promote misandry as well. “So that is where the humour really comes in. However, it should be noted that the movie also highlights domestic violence against women. Why is Domestic violence against men normalised and even worse mocked. 3.4 crore men in India face domestic violence . This is not acceptable. 'Darlings' Review - A Movie That Wants To State "All Men Are Trash ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

"Darlings" starts with the disclaimer that violence against women is very real and that the film doesn't endorse it in any shape or form. The first teaser.

The fact that they look so disinterested has everything to do with the lack of craft in the movie. Talking about the oppressed and the oppressor, the most irksome thing about “Darlings” is its choice to base the plot around the Muslim community and not have a single Muslim actor inhabit these roles. If you want to say that women need to stand up for themselves, then say it with conviction. The movie’s confusion about what it wants to be is evident from its portrayal of violence and the eventual reaction to it. You don’t become the abuser if you abuse the abused. For the most part, it seems like “Darlings” is adamant about saying that “all men are trash,” which is a very common way of insulting patriarchy and calling out men for upholding it. “Darlings” starts with the disclaimer that violence against women is very real and that the film doesn’t endorse it in any shape or form. Then it tracks back to saying that “if you abuse the abuser, then you become the abuser too,” before doing the whole “not all men” nonsense. However, with the inclusion of Zulfi and Kasim Kasai (Rajesh Sharma), the movie walks back on that statement, as if to say, “well, not all men are trash.” There’s a whole speech about women being self-sustainable and whatnot. And then, in the concluding moments, Badru and her mother indicate that women do need a “nice” man in their lives. Directed and co-written by Jasmeet K. Reen, along with co-writers and dialogue writers Parveez Sheikh and Vijay Maurya, “Darlings” starts off with the long-running love story of Badru (Alia Bhatt) and Hamza (Vijay Varma). The narrative jumps forward by three years to show that Badru and Hamza have married each other and are living together. The first teaser features a disclaimer that violence against women can be very injurious to one’s health.

Yet another user supported the ban and said that for Bollywood, domestic violence against men was a matter of joke. Also, in December last year, the OTT platform slashed the subscription prices of Netflix in India to expand the market. However, the trailer seems to indicate that Alia’s character in the movie was a victim of domestic violence herself before she decided to take matters into her own hands to plot a revenge against her husband. The movie, which was made by Jasmeet K. Reen, will debut on Netflix on August 5. It had also started its special operation to learn more about the Indian consumers’ tastes and had decided to include similar content on the platform. #BoycottAliaBhatt and #BoycottDarlings are added to her tweet demanding a ban on the reel. Another such protester who is supposedly a member of the pan India men’s rights NGO, posed a simple question. 3.4 crore men in India face domestic violence . This is not acceptable. The movie which is produced by Gauri Khan, Alia herself, and Gaurav Verma. In yet another scene, Shefali Shah’s character asks Badrunissa to put rat poison in her husband’s meal to aid him to quit alcohol, and Alia’s character follows the advice. The netizens are trending #BoycottAliaBhatt on Twitter as they believe that the actress’ recent release supports domestic violence against men. In another scene, she grabs his hair as the second lead character (Roshan Mathew) force-feeds him what appears to be alcohol.

Darlings movie review: A faltering black comedy on marital violence ... (Firstpost)

When a film deals with a matter as serious as domestic abuse, the least one expects is that the writers would round off every argument made during the ...

The decision to set Darlings in a Muslim milieu is far more well thought out than the treatment of the mindset governing Badru and Hamza’s relationship. The final 20 minutes of Darlings is its best, well written, tightly edited and clear in its vision, but by then it is too late. But Darlings is done in by its half-baked understanding of its subject, unsteady writing and direction. Only in the second hour of the 2 hour 14 minutes running time does the script up the ante in that department. On the execution front though, it barely gets a passing grade. It’s a risky business, but in this area, Jasmeet K. Reen and Parveez Shaikh stay focused and do what quality cinema ought to: depict Muslims as people, with all the virtue and vice, beauty and evil that pervades the rest of humanity. The script’s intellectual limitations become evident early on though when the goal of making Shamshu amusing plays havoc with her characterisation – she, in a sense, pimps Badru to get a discount from a trader, which is at odds with her protectiveness towards the girl at all other times. When the curtain rises on Shamshu, Shefali Shah – fresh from her stupendous performance in Jalsa – is interesting as a mother who has no qualms about advising her daughter to leave, attack or even finish off her abusive husband. There is no evident compulsion keeping Badru bound to Hamza – they have no children and her supportive, financially independent mother is anxious to take her in. Arguably the most famous example of this is Italian actor-director Roberto Benigni’s La vita è bella (Life Is Beautiful), set in a World War II concentration camp. Alia herself plays the protagonist Badrunissa Sheikh who is routinely beaten up by her husband Hamza Sheikh ( Vijay Varma). ‘Provocation’ for this man could be just about anything, including the rice at dinner not being perfectly cleaned. I am not here referring to outrage comedians, the ones who thrive on mocking victims and survivors, but those capable of deploying their wit to mock oppressors without trivialising the oppression itself.

What is she willing to sacrifice for the life she imagined for herself? Instead of using graphic violence or shock value for empathy, the film shows only enough to create an atmosphere of terror and grief, aided by Varma and Bhatt who are both playing to their strengths as actors. The film’s star, however, is Shefali Shah, who brings both grief and comedy to the screen in equal proportions.

Darlings Review: A satirical portrayal of love and abuse in a marriage (Times of India)

Darlings Review: Darlings wouldn't be what it is, if it wasn't for Shefali and Alia.

The camaraderie between the mother and daughter sets the tone of this film — whether its heart-wrenching, emotional scenes – or tougher scenes made light with subtle humour. Darlings makes a compelling case study on domestic violence but it wouldn’t be what it is, if it wasn’t for Shefali and Alia. Both actresses speak through their eyes and make up for the dreary pace at times with their outstanding performances and chemistry. The irony of a beauty parlour lady drawing a mehendi on a blushing bride, while being privy to an abusive marriage next door or a handcuffed Hamza being asked to peel veggies by a suddenly hardened wife… However, a tragic incident forces her to recalibrate her life decisions and her views on her manipulative husband. Even as Hamza habitually beats up Badru black and blue in a drunken state or driven by uncalled-for rage, she devotedly makes an omelette for him the next morning. Debutante director Jasmeet K Reen, who has co-written this film along with Parveez Sheikh takes a closer look at patriarchy and domestic violence (DV) amid the social-psychological milieu of the lower middle class.

He looks like a perfectly agreeable guy in most ways, but it takes the slightest of provocations for him to fly off the handle. Alia Bhatt reveals yet again the full range of her natural ability to get into the skin of a character. A police inspector (Vijay Maurya, one of the film's dialogue writers), too, is a sensitive soul always eager to lend a helping had to victims of domestic violence. The female protagonist of Darlings, Badrunnissa Shaikh, holds on to her fading dreams and gives her violent, alcoholic husband a long rope. The drama that the divergence between mother and daughter yields is muted and when revenge is planned and put into practice it isn't governed by the conventions of the genre. Restraint and simplicity mark Darlings, which tells the story of a volatile marriage steeped in neo-noir devices.

From the heartfelt performances of the actors, to Vishal Bhardwaj’s music and Gulzar’s lyrics, there is much to appreciate, but the end result is still a tad underwhelming. But the funny twists don’t consistently work in a film that assumes an edifying tone in the second half. He hits her, she sheds a tear, he says sorry and she believes it has more to do with the liquor in the belly than the vacuum in his head. Eventually, Badru and her feisty single mother Shamsu (Shefali Shah) decide to turn the tables on Hamza by adopting an eye for an eye approach. It doesn’t allow an abusive husband to fall into the safety net of social conditioning and eating and drinking habits. The creature is born with a sense of entitlement and expresses it when he imagines provocation from the so-called weaker sex.

darlings.

Netflix's Darlings is a treat. A dark comedy pulled off by Alia Bhatt ... (ThePrint)

Jasmeet Reen's Darlings deals with the question that Indian women have heard time and again: Why don't you leave it if it is so bad?

Shamshu and Badru’s relationship is the high point of the film that shines bright. Netflix hasn’t managed to make a lot of forays into desi content and is losing viewership too. You never forget the horrific treatment of Badru by Hamza. But you also marvel at her refusal to crouch into the corner. It’s equal parts comic and cathartic to watch Hamza get a taste of his own medicine. That adds a disturbing element to the film. She negotiates the universe of Badru and Shamshu without being insensitive.

Darlings Movie Review:

Darlings Movie Review:

We are consuming content of all languages - Korean, Spanish, South Indian, etc. Then in 2020, the world went into lockdown, but from the very beginning, we said that this is that kind of film which on a platform like Netflix will be very good, for various reasons.

Darlings presents ugly truths, but always with a twinkle in the eye (Telegraph India)

The film is a story of emancipation and a mother-daughter relationship tale; that final twist uniting Shamsu and Badru in a way that they hadn't ever been ...

For Darlings presents ugly truths, but always with a twinkle in the eye. The tonality of Darlings changes every few scenes, with debutant director Jasmeet K. Reen ensuring that the film defies being boxed into a genre. The scenes of Hamza being ‘tortured’ by the mother and daughter have invited knee-jerk outrage, but as usual, they are being seen out of the context of the film. Zulfi (Roshan Mathew) is the film’s moral compass, unconditionally coming to the aid of mother and daughter when they need it the most. Badru, who is madly in love and believes, as is common in our country, that a child will set Hamza right, tries everything in the book to keep her marriage ticking. Her mother Shamsunissa (Shefali) takes one look at Badru’s injured neck and asks her, “Ab kya kiya tune?” instantly shifting the blame of the violence on to the daughter.

The intricacies of Chawl's life are emphasised; you get a sense of a hundred small hustles running parallelly. Alia is brilliant as Badrunissa. As in Gully Boy (2019) and Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022), her Bombaiyaa accent is spot-on (with an eccentric ‘S’ added to the ends of English words). While her characters in the aforementioned films were defined by their assertiveness, Badru is a bit of a muddle. The first hour is a gripping yet excruciating loop of Hamza’s violations of his wife. Even after she has restrained, drugged up and tortured Hamza, she remains weirdly open to his machinations and appeals (or gives a good impression of it). Shefali is entertaining as Shamsu, “Badappan gaya kan khujane,” she shoots—though the winner, clearly, is Vijay Varma. There are more layers to his Hamza than all one-note abusive husbands from Hindi films combined. The songs, too, are a banger, especially the wild and swooning ‘Pleaj!’. He’s a baiter and a master manipulator, frighteningly aware of his wife’s hopes and dreams and emotional weak points and using them to his advantage. Badrunissa (Alia Bhatt) rushes to a movie date with her boyfriend, Hamza (Vijay Varma). She waits and waits, missing the show. Going by the trailer of Darlings, you’d expect this twist to come much earlier on in the film. Hamza, a jerk and an alcoholic, routinely hits his wife, triggered by anything from slips in her cooking to a genuine concern for his well-being. “Government job leke aya (I found a government job),” he tells her. Equally fascinating, at least to me, are the supporting players who populate the world of this film. Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah, Vijay Varma and Roshan Mathew headline this seductive black comedy set in Mumbai. But that’s just the start.

Darlings movie review: Alia Bhatt brings out her quirky best in this ... (Hindustan Times)

Darlings movie review: Alia Bhatt gives one of her best performances in Darlings, a story about a woman's revenge on her violent husband. | Bollywood.

But when tables turn and Hamza is the supposed victim at the hands of his merciless wife and her mother, violence against men somehow appears to look like a joke. But in parts, the story does bother you when domestic violence is used as a ploy to trigger laughs — a woman sticking by her husband despite being abused, a man showing no sign of regret or for his actions, silent spectators shown as caricatures. He's cruel and unreasonable and his character, I felt, is written in the most realistic manner. From that point, Darlings shows how a middle-class mother-daughter duo (Shah and Bhatt), who is caught in their own circumstantial hang-ups, gradually discovers their inner strength to survive in a city like Mumbai, battling all odds. The husband is an alcoholic who holds no remorse for assaulting his wife every night, the wife is head over heels in love with the man and doesn't mind cooking breakfast — the staple bun omelette — every morning for him with bruises all over — this may be a regular occurrence in many Indian households, but rarely gets talked about the way it should. Badrunissa Shaikh aka Badru (Bhatt) is smitten by roadside romeo Hamza Shaikh (Vijay Varma), and marries him as soon as he secures himself a government job.

A date with hellish fury of a 'Darlings' woman scorned | Movie ... (Onmanorama)

Jasmeet's debut outing throws light on domestic abuse through the lens of a dark comedy. How Badru, played by Alia, decides to stop being the.Darlings.

Her choice of scripts is among the best in the industry. Kudos to Alia Bhatt for letting a woman tell a woman's story and not opt for a man's perception of her troubles. As for Jasmeet, her launch is a laudable one. Hope to see a daring production house in Eternal that isn't afraid to get political with its choice of content. No. Is it a smart genre to talk about a serious issue like domestic abuse? He is in complete control of the mood shifts. Is it the best dark comedy out there? This way, Jasmeet ensures the audience assumes the role of a neighbour, who is both privy and not to the troubles of the couple next door, just like in a chawl. Badru's mother Shamshu (Shefali Shah) lives a couple of doors away from her and just wants her to see through the situation clearly and act on it. It is the performances, as mentioned earlier, that ensure quality to an otherwise ordinary story. The conviction rate is abysmal mainly due to the confusion on what amounts to domestic abuse. Hamza has a government job and Badru is a dreamer with a five-year plan that cannot go wrong if things move along as she intends.
