Premier League 2022-23 Opening Matchday: Fixtures, when and ... (Sportstar)

Both Manchester City and Liverpool, the last season's runners up, have an easy run of fixtures to start off the new season.

The Dutch manager, roped in from Ajax, has a mammoth task in his hands as the fifth permanent manager of Manchester United after Alex Ferguson’s retirement. Fulham - Fulham made their almost-routine-like bounce back into the Premier League after topping the Championship last season. Chelsea too will have a former Machester City attacker in its lineup for the new season after Raheem Sterling’s arrival to the London club. ‘The Cherries’ are now back in the top-tier after struggling for a while under financial issues. Arsenal fans will have a familiar face in the opposite dugout as the Palace side is managed by their club legend, Patrick Vieira. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal’s front line will have a new leader after it lured Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City. The Brazilian forward brings with him the experience of having played under Guardiola for five years.

Premier League: Man City, Liverpool look primed to extend duopoly (Telegraph India)

EPL begins two weeks earlier than the usual mid-August start. The Telegraph gives you a lowdown on the leaders and the chasers.

Forest are back after a 23-year exile, and have spent the most of the new arrivals, with Jesse Lingard from Manchester United the most eye-catching signing. The feeling in Tottenham Hotspur is that they can close the gap on top three and put themselves in the mix for domestic silverware this season. If the lacklustre performances in the pre-season are an indication, then it’s all gloomy at Stamford Bridge. Just two significant additions to the team that finished way behind the top-two don’t bring cheers to the fans. The style of play is likely to be unchanged, however, with wingbacks Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson constantly topping the assist charts for wide players. On the field, in the loop. The two most exciting teams in the Premier League are head and shoulders ahead of their rivals who have a lot of catching up to do.

The new season is finally here! Will it be the same old teams at the top? Who else can contend? What will Newcastle do? Get ready for the action.

The seventh-place finish last term was remarkable, alongside their run to the semifinals of the Europa League and it'd take a monumental collapse for Moyes' job to be in danger this term. If they continue to be comfortable in the league, there's no reason to shake things up on the touchline. It's far from guaranteed that United will finish in the top four, but there has to come a point when the chopping and changing of managers must stop. The pressure on Bamford will be even greater this season and Marsch needs the former Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace forward to rediscover the form of fitness of two years ago. And it could be the head-to-head encounters against City that decide whether this season is better or worse. Leno will be a busy man, but it must be Mitrovic. He scored an incredible 43 goals last season, shattering all sorts of Championship records in the process. Of those they've brought in, Mbabu should prove to be one of the signings of the summer, while Solomon and Palhinha are exciting, as is the arrival of Leno from Arsenal for a low fee and with plenty to prove. Much was made of Brighton's finish in the top half last season and despite being relatively thin in front of goal (42 goals in 38 games), their defending was a major reason for their final position. Highly rated Cook will be key alongside the likes of Kelly and Christie, and you should keep an eye on the fiercely talented Jefferson Lerma. But if Bournemouth are to survive, they need Solanke -- who arrived for a £17m fee in 2019 -- to take his championship goal-scoring form into the top flight. They have a strong spine to the team with Lewis Cook, Dominic Solanke, Lloyd Kelly, Ryan Christie and David Brooks all key, but manager Scott Parker is clearly banking on the team that got them promoted, along with three new additions, being good enough to keep them in the Premier League. Fredericks will offer a new option at right-back, while Rothwell impressed for Blackburn last season. He has been backed up by the club, and he will deliver. And if they can set up camp below the top six this season, next summer's window will see the next phase of the PFI plan come into effect.

Premier League's power risks being dimmed by a further season of ... (The Guardian)

Following the disruption Covid brought to the schedule, the new campaign is facing another challenge – a winter World Cup.

That AerowSculpt technology is still “giving a truer flight”. But the ball will also carry markings that hark back to the first ever Premier League ball in 1992. Take a look at the shockwaves from Qatar 2022 and it seems pretty clear the same forces in another guise – the greed of nation-state football, as opposed to the greed of the cartel clubs – have achieved the same thing from a different angle. On the other Spurs have spent large parts of the summer as third favourites to win it. And while there is currently nothing in place to prevent next season becoming a return, four years on, to untroubled waters it is easy to feel a little sceptical. Even during the in-between years the standard and the level of interest has remained remarkably high. The same goes for after the World Cup. Players discharged in the first 10 days will be thrumming up through the gears for the restart. Stranger things have happened in the past three years of dissolution, but this is going to stretch everyone involved to their outer limits. Never mind Covid. Never mind the post-World Cup transfer madness coming to mid-season for the first time. This has never happened before, the league season skewed like this by outside pressures. In common with every other league, and indeed every other life, the last time the English top tier was able to contemplate an unclouded future was the pre-Covid lull of early 2020. Take, for example, Harry Kane, who tends to play every game he can, as well as some he can’t. In the next five months Kane could feature in up to 34 matches under three different world orders – Premier League, Uefa, Fifa – crisscrossing the UK, mainland Europe and the Gulf. There will, of course, be teams of analysts studying how to peak through this period, when to rest those red-zoning muscles fibres. Like it or not, that voice has become a little wrung-out, the matinee idol presence a little stretched, bow tie askew, clinging to the balustrade.

Instead, Wolves kept him – and reshaped their formation to get the best out of him. Surprisingly, they haven’t done all that much in the transfer window, as their new owners try to aim for self-sufficiency. Richarlison is banned for the opener (for throwing a flare last season) but adds plenty of quality. With only the Europa Conference League on the cards this time around, expect things to be different. If they can’t fix their defence, which conceded 30 goals in their last 12 games, the Saints will be back in relegation-zone hell. Forest have also taken a leaf out of many of their promoted predecessors by spending big … like seriously big. There's nothing better than watching a team earn promotion by playing good football. However, he might get a reprieve and even start in their first round after a late injury to Anthony Martial. After a defensive disaster-class last season, United have plenty of work to do. Even Gabriel Jesus publicly stated he’d rather play as a winger in their system, such was the dazzling brilliance of Pep Guardiola’s attacking style. Sadio Mane has been such a consistent performer for the Reds in recent years, but has always seemed stuck in Mohamed Salah’s shadow. But based on the table after Gerrard joined the club, Villa were 9th in the league.

With greater focus on planning, says Owen Coyle; strength in depth will be crucial, feels Phil Brown. | Football News.

Phil Brown agreed, saying teams that don’t usually play quarter-finals and semi-finals of cup competitions will find the season easier than those who do. Usually in World Cup years you get time off between the tournament and your league but that is not going to happen this time.” Premier League players in the World Cup final will have eight days between the triumph, or disaster, in Doha and a Boxing Day kick-off at their clubs. “Teams that were going well wouldn’t want but teams that have been struggling with injuries or a lack of momentum wouldn’t mind one. “We still have to prepare (for) a season, so we cannot ignore that (the friendly),” Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp has said. That was in 2020-21 when the season began on September 12 and ended on May 23.

Premier League: 10 things to look out for on the opening weekend (The Guardian)

Arsenal look to avoid another opening-day stinker, Everton look toothless and will Jürgen Klopp start Darwin Núñez?

This has been a difficult summer for Leicester. Kasper Schmeichel has left, the futures of Wesley Fofana and James Maddison are up in the air, and the Foxes are the only Premier League club yet to sign a player. A club close to qualifying for the Champions League in 2020 and 2021 found last season did not go entirely to plan, with Brendan Rodgers’ side finishing eighth, six points off a Europa League place. A lot of it is centred around the incisiveness of Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio on the counter, and while West Ham looked short of creativity during pre-season that is likely to be less of a problem against City. After all, David Moyes will not be making plans for his team to dominate possession. The Portuguese’s decision to go awol was surely premeditated as a latest ploy in the push to leave a club there is supposedly adoration for. Erik ten Hag’s first Manchester United XI for a Premier League game is not expected to include Cristiano Ronaldo due to the wantaway striker’s lack of match-fitness. After hosting Aston Villa, Bournemouth next travel to Manchester City before facing Arsenal at home and Liverpool at Anfield. A point at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday may be necessary to avoid the ominous prospect of losing their first four league games and seeing their survival hopes potentially begin to wash away along the south coast by the end of August. Villa fans will be expecting greater things than last season’s 14th place, and if Steven Gerrard’s players are intent on making large strides up the table, picking up three points in games like this should be a must in their hunt for a first top-half finish since promotion in 2019. Conte’s system is based on getting the best out of his front men, and Kane intends to embrace the expectations. When he was denied his wish, he laboured, scoring only one league goal before the middle of December. He rediscovered his groove under Conte, who joined at the start of November, to finish with 17 in the competition and he carries momentum into the opening game against Southampton, having had a proper pre-season this time. Instead the 30-year-old has made it crystal clear he intends to be playing the first-team football that will all but guarantee him a place on England’s World Cup bound flight to Doha in November. Accordingly the consensus is that Howe will start Pope ahead of Dubravka on Saturday. That, in turn, is set to upset the Slovakia goalkeeper and his agent, who has reiterated that his client is too good to be anyone’s understudy. If pre-season is a time for optimism, it has been particularly pronounced at Tottenham. First Antonio Conte committed to the project, then the club made quick and targeted signings. The goalscorer is gone, the England international is out injured for the next six weeks and Rondón is suspended. The Uruguay forward started on the bench when Liverpool beat City in the Community Shield last weekend, but he appeared to be on the same wavelength as his new teammates after coming on in the second half.

The 2022/23 Premier League season is around the corner but while some have their hearts set on titles and trophies, others have their goals set on European ...

It wasn’t the greatest season in the world but after all the lack of hype and their doubters, Crystal Palace managed to knock a few doubters into the ground. In the end, it simply wasn’t meant to be as a late season collapse saw the Eagles fall well short of that coveted European battle but that was mainly because their players simply stopped finding the net. They were, after all, in ninth place for a decent stretch and looked like they could compete for more but if Vieira manages to tighten that defense, make that midfield slightly more dynamic without Gallagher and add more goals from everyone other than Zaha, then it’s a makeable target. Just the four new faces for the Eagles so far but all four indubitably improve their squad especially Cheick Doucoure who comes in to replace Cheikhou Kouyate who left on a free-transfer. Rather impressive even if they did spend almost a 100 million to get there especially given the swashbuckling and showy end to the season they put on for their fans. However, in the perfect world, Jose Sa’s incredible season turns into two and their defense clicks superbly in the absence of Romain Saiss with Nathan Collins slipping in effortlessly to lead Wolves into a European spot. There is zero chance that anything short of a miracle will see Newcastle United break beyond West Ham United and Leicester City, and challenge for a European place. But Pedro Neto’s return combined with Daniel Podence, Hee-Chan Hwang and maybe even Patrick Cutrone, if he stays, could be key if they all hit a vein of form and that might send Wolves up the top. But for these four teams, their dream is to usurp the Big Six and get their hands on a coveted European place. It would have been enough to earn them a Europa League spot and European football for the 2022/23 season but unfortunately, seasons aren’t solely considered based on defensive stats. 11 games into the season and Dean Smith lost his job which came as no shock especially after just three wins in that period and a run of five losses in a row. And it’s not an impossible task, just a really really hard one but for Aston Villa, it might be out of their reach.

The 2022/23 Premier League season is around the corner but while some have their hearts set on titles and trophies, others have their goals set on European ...

When you consider the fact that it is their first season back in the Premier League for almost 23 years, the club haven’t gone stir crazy and signed a bunch of players. Some believe that Nottingham Forest may barely survive the 2022/23 Premier League season and those people, critics and fans might be slightly right. But the loss of Marcelo Bielsa, a consistent flurry of injuries, the fact that they had the fifth worst goals scored record and the second worst goals against record meant that they were very bad. It was lucky that Brentford managed to sign someone of his quality in January and he definitely played a key role to their survival in the second half of the season. Given that Nottingham Forest started the 2021/22 Championship really really really badly, few expected the Tricky Trees to be anywhere near the Premier League at the end of the season. Losing Raphinha and Kalvin Philips could hurt any team on this planet but when one was your top scorer last season and the other a key piece of the midfield, it makes things even tougher. It wasn’t all rosy and happy going for the club but the presence of Eriksen combined with a few other stars finding their feet meant that Brentford did enough to survive. With Christian Eriksen signing for Manchester United, his loss will be a massive massive hole for Brentford to fill and so far the Bees have yet to do exactly that. Yet even then, thanks to their brand of football and Graham Potter’s influence, the Seagulls never struggled as much as they should have and somehow managed to finish ninth in the league. His efforts and tactics could help the club compete for more than just a mid-table place but with the team they have in-place right now, that might be unlikely. After a decent start to their season, Brentford’s form took a nose-dive just before the January transfer window as the team began to struggle to cope with the rigors of Premier League football. It means for the rest, their dreams and aspirations have been placed slightly lower than most at a mid-table place.

We’ll have to wait and see until a ball has been kicked in anger before we get a sense of what Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur can do, but they’re both heading into the season with positive vibes. It’s been a summer of change for Chelsea and Man Utd; new ownership in the case of the former and new management for the latter. Liverpool took City down to the last match of the season, and we’re expecting those two teams to be favourites for the trophy this season.

Premier League 2022-23: New season promises exciting contests ... (Gulf News)

City, United, Chelsea and Arsenal have good additions, but Eriksen the player to watch.

The next team I want to mention is Chelsea, who have had their own luck as it will be tough to replace players like Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger, who left the club to join Barcelona, followed by the likes of Robert Lewandowski. However, they have done a decent job by signing Sterling and Koulibaly, who are fantastic and will be a huge support for Thomas Tuchel. In my opinion they needed a centre-back and who better than the world-class Koulibaly could fit in that role after having proven himself in the Italian league. Now the main dilemma for the club is Christiano Ronaldo as it is clear that he doesn’t want to be a part of the club after missing the preseason due to his personal reasons. And for me Jesus is a masterclass signing, which he has proved in the preseason games. Another promising striker that he has signed is Julian Alvarez, who scored against Liverpool, and a fantastic player like Calvin Phillips, who is an automatic replacement for Fernandina, who left Manchester City last season. Yes, he did not have the best stats in his first game against Liverpool in the Community Shield, but we definitely know that he’s going to erupt the Premier League with his finishing ability. Dubai: The biggest moments for football fans has arrived with the much-awaited Premier League, which began on Friday, giving them a chance to watch their favourite players sweat it out on the field.

Arsenal were on the back foot on the opening Friday night of last season as they lost 2-0 to Brentford but it was a different story under the lights across London this time. Eze is a fine player and as he steps up his return from an ACL injury, the highly-rated 24-year-old will surely improve as he steps into the void vacated by Conor Gallagher, who returned to Chelsea after a season-long loan last term. They had to ride their luck at times with Aaron Ramsdale called into one excellent stop to deny Eberechi Eze early in the second half, but Marc Guehi's late own goal gave them a deserved win which will only heighten the sense of optimism around the club.

Every league in Europe is now dependent on the Premier League's ... (iNews)

The Premier League is now the kingmaker of European football, its money flowing across the continent: This season will be bigger than ever before.

These are the questions that the world is asking. The economic gap between the Premier League and Championship grows every season. The Premier League was not weakened by the global financial and health crisis; it was strengthened. Within the Premier League, there are obvious stratas that are, to an extent, also governed by financial strength. It has the most money and so attracts the best players and coaches, which increases the value of the product and therefore the earning power; the cycle begins again. In 2020, when the revenues of football clubs were decimated by Covid-19’s financial impact, there was much discussion of whether the Premier League was recession-proof.
