ఎం.ఎస్. గురుపాదస్వామి క్విట్ ఇండియా ఉద్యమంలో పాల్గొన్న ఉద్యమ కార్యకర్త. రాజకీయ నేత. రెండుసార్లు రాజ్యసభలో ప్రతిపక్ష నాయకుడిగా పనిచేశారు. నేడు ఆయన జయంతి. 1924 ఆగస్టు 7న మైసూరు జిల్లాలోని మలంగిలో జన్మించాడు. 1942లో క్విట్ ఇండియా ఉద్యమంలో పాల్గొన్న సమయంలో అఖిల భారత విద్యార్థుల సమాఖ్యలో సభ్యుడిగా ఉన్నాడు. భారతదేశానికి స్వాతంత్య్రం వచ్చాక కిసాన్ మజ్దూర్ ప్రజా పార్టీలో చేరారు. తర్వాత కాంగ్రెస్, జనతా, జనతాదళ్ పార్టీలకు మారారు. ‘గీతాంజలి’ రవీంద్రునికి కవిగా ప్రపంచఖ్యాతిని తెచ్చిపెట్టింది. ఈ కావ్యంలోని.. వేర్ ద మైండ్ ఈజ్ వితౌట్ ఫియర్.. గీతం మహాత్మాగాంధీకి ఇష్టమైనది. తన జీవితంపై రవీంద్రుని ప్రభావమెంతో ఉన్నదని జవహర్లాల్ నెహ్రూ కూడా స్వయంగా చెప్పుకున్నారు. రెండవ ప్రపంచ యుద్ధం ప్రారంభమైనపుడు టాగూర్ మానసికంగా కృంగిపోయి అనారోగ్యానికి గురి అయ్యారు. చికిత్స వల్ల కూడా ప్రయోజనం లేకపోయింది. 1941 ఆగస్టు 7న తన 80 ఏళ్ల వయసులో ఆయన తుదిశ్వాస విడిచారు. రవీంద్రనాథ్ టాగూర్ స్వాతంత్య్ర సమరయోధులు కూడా అయినప్పటికీ ఆయన ‘విశ్వ కవి’గా మాత్రమే గుర్తింపు పొందారు. తొలి నుంచీ ఆయన జాతీయ భావాలున్నవారు. హిందూ మేళాలో దేశభక్తి గీతాలను పాడారు. పృథ్వీరాజు పరాజయం గురించి ప్రబోధాత్మక పద్యనాటకాన్ని రచించారు. బ్రిటిష్ ప్రభుత్వం తిలక్ను నిర్భంధించినపుడు ప్రభుత్వాన్ని రాగూర్ తీవ్రంగా విమర్శించారు. బెంగాల్ విభజన ప్రతిఘటనోద్యమంలో కూడా టాగూర్ పాత్ర తక్కువేమీ కాదు. జాతీయ నిధి కోసం ఆయన జోలె పట్టి విరాళాలు వసూలు చేశారు. క్విట్ ఇండియా కార్యకర్త 1896లో జరిగిన కలకత్తా కాంగ్రెస్ సదస్సులో.. బంకిం చంద్ర చటర్జీ ‘వందేమాతరం’ గీతాన్ని మొట్టమొదటిగా తనే ఆలపించారు టాగూర్. ఆయన రాసిన ‘జనగణమణ’ ను జాతీయగీతంగా ప్రకటించేముందు ‘వందేమాతరం’, ‘జనగణమన’ లపై దేనిని జాతీయ గీతంగా ప్రకటించాలని సుదీర్ఘ చర్చ, తర్జన భర్జనలు జరిగాయి. అంతిమంగా రవీంద్రుడి ‘జనగణమన’ దే పైచేయి అయింది. దీంతో రాజ్యాంగ సభ కమిటీ అధ్యక్షుడు బాబూ రాజేంద్ర ప్రసాద్ 1950 జనవరి 24న ‘జనగణమన’ ను జాతీయగీతంగా, వందేమాతరంను జాతీయ గేయంగా ప్రకటించారు. అదే సమయంలో రెండూ సమాన ప్రతిపత్తి కలిగి ఉంటాయని స్పష్టం చేశారు.
