Today's match will be about the performances on the field, but there is much work to be done off it if Barcelona are to take full advantage of their summer overhaul. It figures to be a busy day for the Pumas shot-stopper between the sticks. 4th min: GOAL, BARCELONA! It's a fast start for the hosts as Robert Lewandowski gets Barcelona on the board first with a spectacular opener. 55 mins to kick: The Barcelona lineup is in. There is just a week left to go before their campaign begins, and the club's wage bill is unsustainable as-is, La Liga has determined. 24th min: Chance, Barcelona! Every Barcelona attack seems to produce a great opportunity on goal, and this time only fate keeps the ball from finding the back of the net. It was total and complete domination from Barcelona in the first half, dominating possession and carving the Pumas defense to shreds. Even when Barcelona took their foot off the gas and sat back, Pumas had to fight hard just to string a few passes together. 49th min: GOAL, BARCELONA! After a furious start to the first half, the hosts have begun the same in the second with reinforcements on the pitch. It rolled to Memphis on the end line, but the Pumas goalkeeper is there to stop the chance. 46th min: The second half is under way, with a host of changes for the home side. The ugliest goal yet in a litany of defensive nightmares from the visitors at the Camp Nou.
The footballing world was shocked when Messi departed Barcelona last year, with the Catalans being unable to renew his contract due to the financial situation.
The relationship between Messi and Laporta has not been at its best due to the manner of the former’s exit last summer. PSG, for their part, plan to keep hold of the 35-year-old global icon and want to hand him a new contract. He has made a fine start to the new season, scoring a stunning goal for Les Parisiens against Clermont Foot recently.
Barcelona warmed up for the 2022/23 campaign in style as they thrashed Mexican side Pumas 6-0 at Camp Nou to win the Joan Gamper Trophy.
Hailing the energy and the intensity that his team showed, Xavi added: “With this intensity and desire levels, we’re doing well. About nine minutes later, Barcelona were four goals to the good, with Pedri doubling his tally on the evening. Pedri doubled the Catalans’ lead two minutes later before Ousmane Dembele made it 3-0 in the tenth minute.
FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi have opened negotiations for the club legend to return to the Camp Nou in 2023.
Right at the time he appears to finally be finding his feet with his French employers, however, Messi is being linked back to his first love and boyhood club. Aged 36 by the time he becomes a free agent again if not putting pen to paper once more with PSG, Messi could sign for Barca for a year or two it is said and therefore retire at the club he spent over two decades with after arriving at the La Masia academy as a teenager from Argentina. On June 30 next year, Messi's contract ends with his current club Paris Saint Germain with whom he is said to have the option of extending for another 12 months should he wish.

Barca was leading the game 3-0 as early as ten minutes from the kick-off. The third goal was scored by forward Ousmane Dembele. The Pumas were a sorry sight and it seemed as if their defence was purely theoretical. Barca scored another goal before the break – thanks to Lewandowski assisting Pedri the second time.

And that has been left out at the club." Everything that happens on the field is a reflection of what happens outside. I am eternally grateful to Xavi and the president for bringing me back. "As a cule, I would like Barcelona to do things differently. Barcelona don’t care about the people who made history for the club. "Since I arrived, I made it very clear that I wasn’t any more a 20-year-old guy and that I wanted things to be done head-on, without hiding things.

Frenkie de Jong is refusing to lower his salary at FC Barcelona, despite the club now wanting him to stay.
He knows what I think and what the club wants and needs. As part of an agreement struck on the watch of Laporta's predecessor Josep Bartomeu, De Jong is set to earn €18mn ($18.4mn) this season and €88.58mn ($90.2mn) over the last four years of his contract. Yet due to United's lack of football in the mentioned elite European club competition, and a desire to succeed in Xavi Hernandez's promising sporting project at Camp Nou, De Jong has insisted on staying put at his current club.

De Jong arrived at Barcelona in the summer of 2019 after a €86 million deal was agreed with AFC Ajax earlier in January that year. But they have not been successful in their endeavours, forcing them into taking drastic actions. As per the terms of the new deal, de Jong agreed to reduce his salary for the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons by around €18 million, which would be paid to him across the remaining four years of his contract.

“There is no time to wait in soccer, there is no transition season,” Laporta told Spanish media. “We will be able to register all players,” he said, dismissing concerns that some players would have to be left off the squad until the club could bring in more revenue. Barcelona also defeated Inter Miami, the New York Red Bulls, and Spanish rival Real Madrid during its preseason, in addition to drawing 2-2 with Juventus. The club’s tactics to boost its squad — mostly by giving up future income to add new players now — prompted plenty of doubts and criticism. “We did what we have to do to make Barcelona a reference again.” After a trophyless season in which it didn’t have Lionel Messi for the first time in nearly two decades, the club went to the market and quickly became the top offseason spender in Europe. Barcelona recently sold 25% of its Spanish league television rights for the next 25 years for nearly 670 million euros ($682.1 million), and sold a 25% stake in its production hub for 100 million euros ($101.8 million). On Sunday, it played its first game at the Camp Nou since it was renamed following a sponsorship and naming rights deal with Spotify.

“I have always said that the success of the team drives me. That was very nice, he is a great personality and I am grateful to him, but also to all other people from the board. Finally, Lewandowski was asked about the Ballon d’Or amid speculation that he chose Barcelona simply to win the coveted individual award. Of course you are looking forward to games like the Clásico and Benzema is a great striker, but in the end it’s about winning titles with Barca. Everything else is irrelevant.” Speaking about his farewell at Bayern, Lewandowski added: “It was a strange feeling to go to the training ground for the last time. “This gave me a lot of motivation and hope to achieve my dreams.

Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong is caught in the middle of one of the strangest transfer sagas of all time – with Chelsea and Manchester United still wanting ...
Would it be a stretch to see De Jong at City at the end of all of this? An encyclopedia of football shirts and boots knowledge – both past and present – Mark has also been to the FA Cup and League Cup finals for FFT and has written pieces for the mag ranging on subjects from Bobby Robson's season at Barcelona to Robinho's career. Should the situation between De Jong and Barcelona be resolved swiftly, however, perhaps Man City could still have another part to play. The Blues seem to have done most of their summer business in this way, pouncing in the chance to sign the likes of Marc Cucurella from under Manchester City's noses, looking at Raphinha or Dembele depending on who Barça signed (they weren't expecting both) and even enquiring about the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Gabriel Jesus to test the waters. Now, they want to cancel his existing contract and return to the deal he was on previously. Question marks were raised when the Blaugrana legend appeared to favour stronger, more powerful midfielders early his tenure and when De Jong was substituted against Rayo Vallecano in April, he reacted by storming down the tunnel rather than taking his place on the bench.
Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong has been threatened by FC Barcelona with legal action amid his existing contract issues with the club.
In their letter to Frenkie De Jong last month, Barcelona are said to have informed the Dutchman that the club are in a position to initiate criminal proceedings against the player as he was involved in a supposed wrongdoing with a proven corrupt set of people. However, De Jong is not ready to accept the terms as he first intends to get the money owed to him by the club since he joined the club. Barcelona have told Frenkie de Jong that they want to declare his existing contract as “invalid” and return back to the old deal that he was on before.
A La Liga audit said Barça do not have enough money to cover the purchase of the players they have brought in, including striker Robert Lewandowski.
That enabled the overall accounting value of the deal to be larger now, announcing two deals, the first for 10% of the club’s La Liga TV rights over 25 years, the second for a further 15%. In total, including a new sponsorship deal with Spotify, the departure of players and increased revenue, Barcelona said that they had brought in more than €850m as they seek to improve their squad and fix a financial crisis. Barcelona had accounted for benefits of €667m (£562m) from the sale of two packets of future television rights and had hoped that would help enable them to comply with La Liga’s financial fair play rules.
Regardless of dire straits it is apparently in, Barcelona kept fans and critics watching by high-profile signings. The club's tactics to boost its squad,...

The latest chapter of the saga involving the Dutch midfielder and Barcelona takes a drastic turn.
Both sides have publicly stated a desire for de Jong to remain with Barcelona this season. After signing a two-year contract extension in Oct. 2020, the Dutch midfielder is reportedly owed €18 million ($18.4 million) after part of his salary from the 2020-21 and 2021-22 pandemic seasons was deferred. Mexico’s Pumas UNAM that the club “will be able to register all players.”
Latest bid to declare Frenkie De Jong's contract 'illegal' is the height of ridiculousness.
And yet you can’t escape the feeling that they’ll get away with it, because La Liga isn’t actually going to let them go out of business and take most of the league with it. A lot of that latter effort has concerned getting De Jong completely off the books, which they haven’t been able to do and De Jong doesn’t want. However, that might not be enough for La Liga to sanction the registering of their new signings, and they also need to get their wage bill down. As we wrote before, De Jong deferred his salary during the pandemic to the last two years left on his contract at the time, and two more years that were tacked onto the end of it to spread those payments out. If you had been asleep the past year and a half to two years (and we’re all jealous if you were), this past summer probably looked pretty normal in the soccer world. But Barca doesn’t. And what they’re doing to try and register them is bordering on the absurd or something out of a satirical film.
The ongoing contract stand off between Frenkie de Jong and Barcelona could take a dramatic turn this week.
The report states Joan Laporta and the Barcelona hierarchy are questioning the legality of his second contract due to potential ‘criminality’ on the part of the previous board. However, as per exclusive reports from The Athletic, Barcelona want to annul the contract de Jong signed in 2020, and revert back to the deal he penned on his arrival at the club in 2019. ▪️#FCBwant De Jong to revert to his 2019 contract
La Liga has blocked Barcelona from registering new players before season. England defender Conor Coady has joined Everton from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
West Brom manager Steve Bruce admitted he was torn between applauding Sarr’s wonder goal and criticising Button. “Like everybody in the ground, did I want to applaud it or look at my goalkeeper, thinking ‘where are you?!”’ said Bruce. “It’s a wonderful piece of skill by a very good player. But I’d have taken it.” “The first conversation I had with the manager was a little bit surreal. “I’ve grown up around the city… I’m someone who was desperate to come here. I’m over the moon to join.

But as the leader of the team, he is willing to accept the lowered terms, especially given the fact that Barcelona are not in a position to register the new signings, just yet. The Catalans are confident they can tie Busquets down to a lowered deal. As we close in on the start of the new season, FC Barcelona are facing several challenges from a financial perspective.

De Jong's deal was similar to that of Gerard Pique, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Clement Lenglet. Therefore, Barcelona believes that specific laws were broken upon signing such a deal, with his contract likely being terminated. Barça are currently in contact with Messi’s environment. Not to mention, the move could be beneficial for the club as well, as Messi offers certain economic incentives and the prospects of him sharing the pitch with Lewandowski could significantly increase the club’s overall clout in European football. As per Xavi Campos, Messi’s path to a return to Barcelona appears to be clear for now, with everything indicating a reunion between the player and the club in 2023.

Barcelona have been trying to get de Jong to lower his salary or offload him all summer. It is claimed that the Dutchman’s camp believes that they more than played their part in helping the club, settling for wages as less as €3 million in 2020/21 and €6 million in 2021/22, which they consider is well below the level of the midfielder and now want Barça to hold up their end of the deal. It was claimed that the Catalans were considering legal action regarding the matter and had warned de Jong and his camp that they might get implicated even though the club held the previous board, led by ex-president Josep Maria Bartomeu, responsible.

Barcelona are bickering with the Spanish league over a deal to sell off a chunk of their future TV income from playing in it to a US firm.
Barca have been trying to sell the Dutch midfielder all summer and agreed a fee with Manchester United, only for the player himself to refuse to move. It should be noted that Barca chose to sell a share of their future TV revenues to Sixth Street after declining to enter the somewhat similar but different arrangement La Liga has with rival fund CVC. Under the CVC deal, only 15 per cent of money raised can go towards signings, while Barca’s deal with Sixth Street allows them much more freedom on how they spend the money. This new asset has a value that should be reflected in their accounts, which Barca and their current auditors have valued at €150million. This is just usual accounting practice, the sources maintain, in accordance with Spanish GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles), which La Liga rules say all clubs must follow. This apparent threat by Barca’s current board can be seen as them trying to push him out of the club. Everyone agrees that Barca have raised the €700million or so needed to fix the historic holes in their accounts. The first two “economic levers” that Barca pulled this summer were the sale of some of their future TV rights to US fund Sixth Street. The deal for 10 per cent of Barca’s La Liga TV rights for the next 25 years was announced on June 30, just in time for the close of the 2021-22 financial year. Barca declined to comment when asked about the situation, but The Athletic has spoken to various sources involved in the sale of their TV rights who have another understanding. Another way in which Barca could raise money would be by selling players and banking a big transfer fee. That was announced as worth a total capital gain for Barca of €267million. The second tranche was announced on July 22, the sale of a further 15 per cent of their future La Liga TV rights for the next 25 years. La Liga then sets a salary limit for each club based on their predicted income and outgoings for each season. All La Liga clubs must supply the central authority with information supporting their accounts. Barca president Joan Laporta said at Kounde’s presentation last Friday that activating the levers had raised €868million in new revenues.
