हालांकि उनके किसी साथी ने हुसैन का साथ नहीं छोड़ा. आखिरकार मुहर्रम की 10 तारीख को यजीद की फौज ने हुसैन के लश्कर पर हमला बोल दिया. इस जंग में 72 लोगों की मौत हुई. खलीफा बनने की चाहत में यजीद ने हुसैन और उनके बेटे-भतीजे को भी मौत के घाट उतार दिया. यजीद खुद को खलीफा मानता था और उसने हुसैन पर भी अपने मुताबिक चलने का दबाव बनाया. ताकि इस्लाम पर उसका कब्जा हो जाए. लेकिन हुसैन ने उसका हुक्म मानने से इनकार कर दिया. मुहर्रम की दूसरी तारीख को हुसैन अपने लोगों के साथ कर्बला पहुंच गए. यजीद ने मुहर्रम की 7 तारीख को हुक्म थोपने के इरादे से हुसैन और उनके साथियों का पानी बंद कर दिया. यजीद बहुत ताकतवर था. इसके बावजूद हुसैन ने उसके सामने घुटने नहीं टेके. यजीद का जुल्म बढ़ता देख हुसैन ने अपने साथियों से जान बचाकर भागने को कहा. वो नहीं चाहते थे कि उनके किसी साथी को यजीद का जुल्म सहना पड़े. हजरत मुहम्मद साहब की मौत के बाद उनके उत्तराधिकार को लेकर झगड़े शुरू हो गए. अमीर मुआविया ने पांचवें उत्तराधिकारी के रूप में अपने बेटे यजीद को उत्तराधिकारी घोषित कर दिया, जिसका शासनकाल सबसे बदतर माना जाता था. मोहम्मद साहब के परिवार ने यजीद को शासक के रूप में मान्यता देने से इनकार कर दिया. इस कारण हजरत मोहम्मद के नवासे हुसैन और यजीद के बीच जंग शुरू हो गई. शिया मुस्लिम मुहर्रम को गम का महीना मानते हैं. आज से करीब 1400 साल पहले कर्बला में इंसाफ की जंग हुई थी. इस जंग में पैगंबर हजरत मोहम्मद के नवासे इमाम हुसैन अपने 72 साथियों के साथ शहीद हो गए थे. इस्लाम की रक्षा के लिए उन्होंने खुद को कुर्बान कर दिया था. यह घटना मुहर्रम के 10वें दिन यानी रोज-ए-आशुरा के दिन हुई थी. इसी कारण मुहर्रम की 10 तारीख को ताजिए निकाले जाते हैं. इस दिन शिया समुदाय के लोग मातम मनाते हैं. मजलिस पढ़ते हैं और काले रंग के कपड़े पहनकर शोक व्यक्त करते हैं. इस दिन शिया समुदाय के लोग भूखे-प्यासे रहकर शोक व्यक्त करते हैं. ऐसा मानना है कि इमाम हुसैन और उनके काफिले के लोगों को भी भूखा रखा गया था और उन्हें इसी हालत में शहीद किया गया था. जबकि सुन्नी समुदाय के लोग रोजा-नमाज करके अपना दुख जाहिर करते हैं. मुहर्रम का पूरा महीना रहमत वाला होता है. इस महीने की शुरुआत से ही लोग अपने-अपने इलाकों में तजिया बनाने का काम करते हैं. मुहर्रम के एक दिन पहले लोग तजिया को चबूतरा पर रख देते हैं और अगले दिन सुबह तजिया जुलूस निकालते हैं. साथ ही इस दिन क्षेत्र में होने वाले मेलों में तजिया सम्मेलन कराते हैं. इस्लामिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार पैगंबर मोहम्मद साहब के पोते हजरत इमाम हुसैन और बादशाह यजीद की सेना के बीच जंग हुई थी. जंग में बादशाह यजीद की सेना द्वारा हजरत इमाम हुसैन और उनके परिवरा को उनके सेनाओं के साथ शहीद कर दिया गया था. मान्यताओं के मुताबिक मुहर्रम के महीने में दसवें दिन ही इस्लाम की रक्षा के लिए हजरत इमाम हुसैन ने अपनी जान कुर्बान कर दी थी. इसलिए हर वर्ष मुहर्रम महीने के 10वें दिन मुहर्रम मनाया जाता है.
