Being the top-seeded, their average rating of their players was an astonishing 2771, well ahead of India A (2696), Norway (2692) and Spain (2687). In view of these figures, not getting any medal at all seemed just unthinkable. This result gave the match victory to the Uzbeks, and this proved decisive for the final result in the Olympiad. The brilliant performance of Robert Hovhannisyan on board 4 was also decisive. This is a reassuring result for a team that last year lost its franchise player, Levon Aronian, who changed federations to the USA. The young Uzbek star had an excellent performance in Chennai, scoring 7 victories (five of them consecutive), 3 draws, and only one loss. However, a tragedy struck in the decisive clash against the Uzbeks, in the 10th round: despite having a favourable position during most of the game, towards the end Gukesh lost the thread and blundered, losing on the spot.

44th Chess Olympiad: How The Sport Has Been Inspiring Bollywood ... (News18)

Little wonder then that movie makers latched on to the appeal of using the board game to script a story for a different type of audience.

Compressing a living legend’s story, chess action across locations, in a movie format is a challenge, as well as the opportunity for the film world. Incidentally, a biopic on Vishy Anand, as he is known in the chess world, is reportedly in the making, according to filmmaker Anand Rai. The actor to play the lead role is to be decided, the movie title yet to be announced. A celebrity in the sporting world, more than a chess genius, the 2016 documentary is only the tip of the iceberg as far as the Magnus impact on chess now and in future. The chess journey took Vishy across the seas, early lessons under mother Susheela in Chennai and later in Manila (Philippines) where his father K Viswanathan was posted, earning the Lightning Kid nickname as a teenager for rapid-fire moves to become India’s first GM at 18 years. Chess maestros devoting a major chunk of life in pursuit of excellence, like India’s world champion Viswanathan Anand, the colourful Kasparov, stoic Anatoly Karpov and temperamental genius Bobby Fischer, to name a few who made news in the chess world, deserve a cinematic look. Movies weaving such scenes into the storyline, a display of astonishing memory power, can be as dramatic onscreen as shootouts in a closed room. Back home in India, the film earned recognition for Ray at the National Film Festival 1978 (Best Hindi feature film). Curiosity about the use of sports scenes in movie storytelling was a hallmark of a master filmmaker. Directed by Bejoy Nambiar, based on Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s story, the plot revolves around Daanish chasing daughter Noorie’s murderer and in the process meeting Pandit Dhar, chess teacher to the daughter earlier. As a brain game, chess has very positive connotations, as is visible from the phenomenal way the sport, played with physical black and white pieces, has spread across the oceans. The Norwegian, among the competitors at the ongoing Olympiad, is a chess prodigy on whose early life a documentary was made. The famous Satyajit Ray’s Shatranj Ke Khiladi (title renamed The Chess Players before international release) wove in passionate players, Mirza Sajid Ali (Sanjeev Kumar) and Mir Roshan Ali (Saeed Jaffrey) from Awadh province in pre-independent India. The British annex Awadh (also called Oudh), whose wealthy noblemen escape to a faraway village for a game of chess.

Viswanathan Anand looks back at performances from day 11 of the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Chennai.

It’s amazing every one of our guys won something, because Arjun won silver and Praggnanandhaa, a bronze, and that’s just so cool. TanIa was the one scoring very often and Bhakti also contributed some crucial wins and it's very sad that they both lost today. I really commend Ramesh and all the players in India 2 to pull themselves together. Humpy had a very imaginative sacrifice but unfortunately, it seems that the precision required after that was quite high. But, of all the days to have a bad day was today when you can no longer repair the damage. A first bronze from the women's section is still very special for Indian chess.

Women's side had one hand on trophy, but had a nightmarish final day to end third; Praggnanandhaa, Gukesh & Co settle for bronze too.

Grief still lingered in her tone, but in these moments of heartbreak could lie the seeds of their moments of glory. That would be the legacy of our bronze, though it could have been better,” she says. He said it happens to everyone, it’s normal, and you just have to move on, not think about the past. He felt devastated and shut himself in the room. But of all the matches, the law of averages caught up with her on the last day and she lost her first game of the campaign. Humpy has waged several battles and endured dizzying ups and downs herself, but in a defeated tone, she said: “Winning a bronze is indeed historic, but as a sportsperson, I am still grappling with the reality that we failed to win a tournament that we should have. Sometimes, on such monosyllabic words hinge the destiny of men and empires. The Indian refused and got beaten. We had worked so hard for all these months and reached so close, but to slip on the last day is devastating,” she reflected, concealing the pain in a half-smile. Both R Vaishali and Koneru Humpy were forced into draws by Gulrukhbegi Tokhirjonova and Irina Krush. Bhakti Kulkarni, who had replaced the experienced Harika Dronavalli who is in an advanced stage of pregnancy, too fumbled against Tatev Abrahamyan. “We missed her (Harika) but we had made a decision to not play her on the final day as her pregnancy was quite advanced,” Humpy said. Time will heal wounds and they will resign to the cruel denouement of the sporting gods. A historic medal, but a cruel souvenir of their most painful afternoon.

17-year-old World Rapid Champion Nodirbek Abdusattorov might have missed the 2700 club after his last draw against Anish Giri, but he won against Fabiano Caruana, and the until then unbeatable Gukesh. Vantika Agrawal made her second IM norm and crossed 2400 in live ratings, while Vaishali Rameshbabu won the bronze on Board 3 to “escape” from her brother’s shadow. The Indian women’s team had been rock solid and was very close on winning the gold to lose against the USA and end up with a respectful bronze medal. Gukesh came back after R10 terrible loss against Abdusattorov, drew against Vincent Keymer, and took a well deserved gold medal on Board 1 with a 2867 performance. Uzbekistan has won the silver medal in 1992 when none of the current team had yet been born (!), and will host the 2026 Olympiad. The Chess Olympiad 2022 in Chennai, India is officially over but will definitely stay alive in our minds as one of the most impressive, heartwarming, intense, refreshing, and promising chess events of all time.
