Towards the end in fact, when the country recedes in the background, Laal looks like a disconnected ghost, unwittingly complementing the persona of his long-distance runner. The new name is a masterstroke – appropriately Indian and charming (I won’t reveal it here, for you must find out yourself) – but makes little sense in the world of hard business. The writing regains its purpose and momentum through a long Kargil War stretch featuring a twist missing in the original. It’s fittingly from a film that, challenging the status quo, perhaps wouldn’t even have been conceived today: “Thoda khao, thoda phenko.” There’s a pensive Khan (Dhobi Ghat), an eye-dilating Khan (3 Idiots), a stunned-eye Khan (PK), and so on. The movie takes a sharp turn from here due to two broad reasons: a) Khan enters the film for the first time in its chronological sweep, and b) it starts taking a “phipty-phipty” approach. Worse, the age difference between the actor and his character swings from two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half decades – it’s not just sloppy but embarrassing. It’s preceded by a charming comedic bit, where Laal teaches Shahrukh Khan (playing himself) his signature, iconic pose – a hat-doff to the Tom Hanks movie where Forrest inspired Elvis Presley. These choices are sharp, recognising the original and embracing the local. Then there’s Khan. An impressive actor with a versatile filmography, he sometimes gets ‘stuck’ in a mode that lasts the entire movie. In 1983, Laal proposes marriage to his friend, Rupa, who gets distracted by the sounds of crackers – celebrating the country’s World Cup win – leaving him alone with his question. By making a Sikh man the centre of their film, they intend to tell the story of a marginalised India, a wounded India. It devotes 40-odd minutes, around one-fourth of the total runtime, on the boy, shunning any hurry to bring in the superstar. The Aamir Khan-starrer chooses, to borrow a phrase from actor Johnny Walker, a “phipty-phipty” approach.

Perhaps if the makers hadn't really called it the official Hindi adaptation of Forrest Gump, and just another movie like Salman Khan's Bharat - which, by the way, is very Forrest Gump-like - Laal Singh Chaddha would have appealed more. At what point during the making of Laal Singh Chaddha, one the actor himself admitted took him close to a decade and a half to make, did Aamir decide to reimagine Forrest's developmental disability as a mental disability in Laal, defeats me. The zeal and confidence she instils in Forrest are defeated by the typical Maa funda in Laal Singh Chaddha - shielding her son from all the communal riots that ripped India apart in the 80s and 90s by teaching him 'desh mein malaria faila hua hai'. The makers do tie it up later with one of the most pragmatic lines in the film - dharam se malaria failta hai - but it came far too late, and we were bored. I don't mind the fact that the box of chocolates is now replaced by golgappas - in fact, I'll say it adds quite the Indian tadka. The official Hindi adaptation of this Hollywood classic, Laal Singh Chaddha, much like that iconic buoying white feather, common in both films, floats but each time it lands at Aamir's shoes, is simply trampled upon. Aamir Khan's last great performance, some say, was Dangal. For me, it was Ghajini. It is ironic, therefore, that the actor, like the protagonist of the Memento remake, has forgotten what 'acting' is.

And thus, Gary Sinise’s legendary, historic character from Forrest Gump becomes an Islamist terrorist, a ‘good’ person apparently because that is what Aamir Khan and Atul Kulkarni the writer wants Indians to swallow. On the other hand, Raksha Bandhan is estimated to open with Rs 9 crore on day one and may end up reporting lifetime collection of Rs 80-90 crore. We maintain that Hindi Box Office is slated to decline 22 per cent (vs pre COVID levels) in Q2FY23, as content has been below par so far and we are already the end of first half of the quarter, with no film reporting a positive surprise,” he said. Lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya seems to be a little lost in the film.
