Slow start for 'Laal Singh Chaddha,' 'Raksha Bandhan', experts bank ... (Business Today)

After a spate of box office duds coming from Bollywood, a lot is riding on the fate of Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumar's Raksha Bandhan.

While Bollywood’s performance has been dismal, four successive super-hits from the South—Pushpa: The Rise Part-1, RRR, KGF: Chapter 2 and Vikram (to a much smaller extent in Hindi as Vikram: Hitlist)—have grossed more than Rs 3,000 crore worldwide, including nearly Rs 800 crore in Hindi net collections. On the other hand, Raksha Bandhan is estimated to open with Rs 9 crore on day one and may end up reporting lifetime collection of Rs 80-90 crore. We maintain that Hindi Box Office is slated to decline 22 per cent (vs pre COVID levels) in Q2FY23, as content has been below par so far and we are already the end of first half of the quarter, with no film reporting a positive surprise,” he said. His only hit during this period has been Sooryavanshi (Nov 5, 2021), which was made on a production budget of about Rs 160 crore and earned a net lifetime collection of Rs 196 crore in India and Rs 295 crore gross worldwide collections, according to Bollywood Hungama. Elara Capital’s vice president Karan Taurani says expects Laal Singh to have a stronger opening with Rs 16 crore, and a lifetime collection of Rs 150-160 crore. Seven of the top 10 grossers in this span were from the South, pegs Ormax Media data. Trade analyst Komal Nahta says they are both costly, big-banner and well-mounted films, which are coming when Bollywood is reeling under the pressure of losses. Raksha Bandhan, on the other hand, saw advance booking of 35,000 tickets sold for Day 1 at the box office with a total collection of approx. The film is produced by Zee Studios and director Aanand L. Rai at an approximate budget of over Rs 70 crore. In terms of all India sales, the film, which is an official remake of the hit Hollywood film Forrest Gump, has sold approximately 57,000 tickets for the opening day. For last few weeks, the film was facing social media backlash and boycott calls because of old statements of Aamir Khan, who has also produced the film along with Viacom18 studios. Over the next eight days, there are four holidays owing to Raksha Bandhan, a long weekend including Independence Day, followed by Janmashtami and Parsi New Year which may be partial holidays.

Raksha Bandhan, Laal Singh Chaddha see extremely low opening ... (Hindustan Times)

The opening day occupancy of both Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan have been way below expectations, ringing alarm bells across Bollywood. | Bollywood.

Films have seen growth through word-of-mouth, most notably The Kashmir Files, but bigger tentpole films like Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan work on strong opening days, which looks like a stretch here. The one thing working for the two films is positive critical reception, which both have received. The advance bookings of Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan are way below expectations... Trade analysts say the figures should improve over the weekend but 60-70 percent occupancy looks unlikely, which means the films will struggle to post huge opening weekend numbers. Now, sources say that the opening day first shows have seen remarkably low attendance for both films. This release day (August 11) was thought by many to help revive the Hindi film industry with two big releases in Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan. With Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar headlining the two films, many expected the films would break the rut – of Bollywood non-performers.

Box Office: Laal Singh Chaddha & Raksha Bandhan send shock ... (PINKVILLA)

The Aamir Khan starrer edged past the Akshay Kumar starrer and this is no consolation for the film because that film had a higher production budget to begin ...

Laal Singh Chaddha collected Rs. 10.75 cr nett on its first day, which is a fifth of his last big ticket release Thugs Of Hindostan. The numbers in East Punjab have been excellent but the film has not performed optimally, elsewhere. It was an extremely poor day at the box office for the two big Bollywood films that released in theatres yesterday, namely Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan. Both films were expected to draw audience to theatres on the auspicious day of Raksha Bandhan, but failed miserably. Both films ran at an average occupancy of 25 percent throughout the day and this is despite coming on the same day, which should ideally result in higher occupancies.

Laal Singh Chaddha becomes Aamir Khan's lowest opener in 13 ... (OpIndia)

Aamir Khan starrer Laal Singh Chaddha has tanked at the box office with its opening day collection being abysmal. | OpIndia News.

YouTuber and film enthusiast Dewansh Singh Rajput published a video review of the film on his YouTube channel in which he made some worrisome allegations against the film. According to Bollywood pundits, an Aamir Khan movie should have ideally had an opening of Rs 30 crores. Earlier, when PR agencies were doing on overdrive trying to show an uptick in advance booking, Taran Adarsh had tweeted sounding a warning that people should not believe the hype that has been created. The movie is said to be doing better in Delhi and Punjab but has failed miserably in the rest of the country. The movie’s opening and just how badly it did is evidenced by the fact that the opening was worse than the Kabir Khan directorial, 83, and the Farhad Samji film, Bachchhan Paandey. On the other hand, the movie did not even come close to opening days for movies that have been mega hits this year. It is reported to be the lowest opening that an Aamir Khan movie has seen in the past 13 years.

Both the films also faced a section of social media’s boycott calls, which both Aamir and Akshay have addressed. Laal Singh Chaddha, according to BOI, is performing similarly to December’s large-scale sports drama 83, which made around Rs 14 crore, but underperformed at the box office because of a new wave of the pandemic. Raksha Bandhan was one of the many Akshay Kumar projects that were completed over the pandemic with breakneck speed. Box Office India says that Laal Singh Chaddha made Rs 10.75 crore on its opening day, which was described in the report as ‘shocking’. Bollywood Hungama said this will be the lowest opening for Aamir Khan in the past 13 years. It was a poor opening day at the box office for Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha, the epic remake of Hollywood hit Forrest Gump that released on Thursday amid calls for a boycott. The final box office numbers are awaited.

Laal Singh Chaddha Day 1 Box Office Collection: Aamir Khan's Film ... (Filmibeat)

After a long wait, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khans much anticipated labour of love Laal Singh Chaddha released in cinema halls on Thursday (Raksha Bandhan).

Aamir Khan-starrer Laal Singh Chaddha is an official remake of Tom Hank's Hollywood cult classic Forrest Gump which won six Oscars in 1994. With an occupancy rate pegged between 15-20% in the morning shows, the film doesn't give enough reasons to celebrate despite its opening day figure touching the double-digit mark. In comparison, Aamir's last release Thugs Of Hindostan which was a box office disaster, had earned more on its opening day.

Bollywood's Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan is making his comeback on the big screens with “Laal Singh Chaddha” after almost four years.

Had it been the pre-pandemic days, we would have hoped for the opening of over Rs 20 Cr but the situation is different now. But seems like, it will meet the same fate as Prithviraj and Shamshera at least on the first day given the response in bookings. The advances are around 50% lower than Kartik’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 which had sold 1.05 lakh tickets in the same properties, for the first day.
