Stuck by an unforeseen tragedy, our protagonist finally realises the social evil that is dowry, and how he should instead be educating his sisters so that they make a name for themselves. Bhumi Pednekar is reduced to a romantic interest pining to get married to the supposed love of her life. The premise of the film is centred around dowry and a loud, hyper Kedarnath (Akshay Kumar), brother to four young sisters, who is trying his best to marry them off. One: His sisters, all except one, are unruly and he feels marrying them off—the zenith of a girl’s existence—will be tough. Kumar is accompanied by Bhumi Pednekar and a slew of other actors in this Aanand L. Rai directorial but, the question is, does it work?

इस मूवी के देखे जाएं तो दो ही स्टार हैं लेखक और निर्देशक के अलावा. वो हैं अक्षय कुमार (Akshay Kumar) और भूमि के पिता का किरदार निभाने वाले कलाकार. लेकिन भूमि या सादिया (शिकारा फेम) को आप नजर अंदाज नहीं कर सकते. नए चेहरों में जिस भी सीन में मौका मिला साहिल मेहता, दीपिका खन्ना, स्मृति, शाहजमीन आदि ने भी बेहतर एक्टिंग की है. हिमेश रेशमियां पर आनंद का भरोसा उतना बुरा भी नहीं था, 2 या 3 गाने अच्छे बन पड़े हैं. मूवी में गोलगप्पे बेचने वाले को हीरो देखना आसान काम नहीं था, लेकिन हिमांशु और कनिका मियां बीवी की जोड़ी ने एक एक सीन और डायलॉग को ऐसे रचा है कि आपकी हंसी रुक ही नहीं सकती. आनंद एल राय ने चांदनी चौक को भी ऐसे कागज पर उतारा है कि आपको सब कुछ सहज लगने लगता है. इस तरह की देसी कॉमेडी के सरताज अक्षय कुमार को जन्मभूमि चांदनी चौक और भूमि जैसी हीरोइन का साथ भी मिल जाए तो नतीजे कमाल के होते हैं और वही हुआ भी है. लेकिन इंटरवल से ठीक पहले गायत्री की शादी के बाद जो मूवी इमोशनल होना शुरू होती है, रक्षाबंधन के माहौल में आंसुओं का रोकना मुश्किल हो जाएगा. हालांकि तनु वेड्स मनु सीरीज, जीरो, अतरंगी रे जैसी मूवीज साथ बना चुके हिमांशु शर्मा और आनंद एल राय की ट्यूनिंग पुरानी है. अतरंगी रे में अतिरंजित स्टोरी के बाद दोनों ने ही थोड़ा नियंत्रण ये रखा कि मूवी को चांदनी चौक से ज्यादा बाहर नहीं ले गए और ना ही रक्षाबंधन जैसी मूवी में जबरन कोई और धार्मिक एलिमेंट घुसाया, जैसा कि आमतौर पर हिमांशु और कनिका करते आए हैं. हालांकि दहेज की थोड़ी और ज्यादा चर्चा भी इस मूवी को पटरी से उतार सकती थी. इसलिए किसी भी तरह मूवी संतुलन बनाए रखा और लोग उसके साथ हंसते रोते रहे. वो कई बार केदारनाथ को धमकी देता है, कई बार लड़कों को दिखाता है, लेकिन कभी केदारनाथ कभी उसकी बहनें लड़के वाले को भगा देती हैं, इधर दहेज के चक्कर में केदारनाथ के हाथ से रिश्ते फिसल जाते हैं. कैसे भी मैचमेकर (सीमा पाहवा) की मदद से बड़ी बहन गायत्री (सादिया खतीब) की शादी कर देता है, लेकिन वह दहेज की मांग के आगे खुदकुशी कर लेती है. यहां से कहानी एक अलग ही टर्न लेती है और फिर उस केदारनाथ का लक्ष्य बिलकुल बदल जाता है, जो दो बहनों की शादी के लिए अपनी किडनी तक बेच चुका था. कहानी यूं तो मूवी के ट्रेलर से ही सबको समझ आ रही थी, फिर भी जान लीजिए. लाला केदार नाथ (अक्षय कुमार) एक ऐसी गोलगप्पे की दुकान दिल्ली के चांदनी चौक में चलाते हैं, जिनको खाकर लड़का पैदा होता है. इसलिए उनकी दुकान पर गर्भवती महिलाओं की भारी भीड़ लगी रहती है. लेकिन उनके अपने घर में शादी को तैयार चार चार बहनें हैं, जिनके लिए लड़का नहीं मिल रहा. केदारनाथ से मां ने मरने से पहले वायदा लिया था कि इन चारों की शादी से पहले शादी मत करना. उसके बचपन का प्यार सपना (भूमि पेडनेकर) इस वायदे का शिकार है, उसका पिता रिटायर होने वाला है और उससे पहले अपनी बेटी की शादी केदारनाथ से करना चाहता है. Do, by all means, show us the horrors of dowry, and the other evils associated with this never-ending tradition of shaadi-vaadi, but how about also being aware of the responsibilty of an artist with such a large catchment? You start with a girl happy to go it on her own, insteading of hurriedly, almost aplogetically ending with it, and see how the world changes. Here too, once the three-fourth mark is safely over, after the loss of a young girl and, wait for it, a kidney, the film suddenly becomes a beacon for girls to stand on their own feet, and fight the evils of dowry. Lalaji negotiating the ‘burden’ of his ‘unbyaahi behens’ on the one hand, and on the other, trying to balance his filial duties with his own desires. Within seconds, Lalaji waltzes into his house, ensconced in a narrow gali, labelling his unmarried sisters by their physical characteristics: one is overweight, the other is dark, the third is a hoyden; only the oldest, the ‘achcha bacchcha’ (good girl) is naturally the only one who is fair and demure.

‘रक्षा बंधन’ उस सोच पर चोट करना चाहती है जिसके मुताबिक दहेज देने में भाई या पिता गर्व महसूस करता है. ऐसा मानता है कि बहन या बेटी के लिए कुछ कर रहा हूं. एक हद तक अपनी कोशिश में कामयाब भी होती है. लेकिन सिर्फ एक हद तक, क्योंकि एक पॉइंट के बाद फिल्म की लिखाई अपनी मैसेजिंग में कंफ्यूज़ होती दिखती है. एक ट्रैक से दूसरे ट्रैक पर झट से चली जाती है. ऐसा शायद फिल्म की सीमित लेंथ की वजह से किया गया हो. जैसे पहले सीन में ही लाला अपनी सांवली बहन को ताना मारता है कि अंधेरे में डरा देगी किसी को. एक बहन का वजन ज़्यादा है तो उसके कपड़ों पर कमेंट करता है. ऐसे लोग और ऐसी बातें हमारे चारों तरफ होती हैं. मसला ये है कि ऐसे किरदारों से आप डील कैसे करते हैं. लाला बुरा आदमी नहीं. बस उसके सिर पर भूत सवार है, कि कैसे भी अपनी बहनों की शादी करनी है. शायद ऐसा ही जुनून फिल्म पर भी सवार था. चारों बहनों और उनकी दुनिया को सिर्फ शादी के इर्द-गिर्द समेट कर रख देना. यही वजह है कि हमें कभी पता नहीं चलता कि उनकी हॉबी क्या थी. वो अपने करियर में क्या बनना चाहती थीं. उनके घर में सिर्फ और सिर्फ शादी की ही चर्चा सुनाई पड़ती है. ‘रक्षा बंधन’ के प्रमोशन के दौरान ये बात आई थी कि ये अक्षय कुमार के करियर की सबसे छोटी फिल्म है. मेरे विचार में किसी और फिल्म को इस उपाधि का गौरव बख्शा जा सकता था. एक घंटे 50 मिनट की लेंथ के चक्कर में फिल्म बहुत जगह भागती है. उसे थोड़ा डटना चाहिए था, अपने किरदारों और अपनी ऑडियंस, दोनों के लिए. इसी रफ्तार की वजह से ‘रक्षा बंधन’ के पास याद रखे जाने के रूप में सिर्फ कुछ पल रह जाते हैं. फिल्म के कुछ इमोशनल सीन अपना काम करते हैं. लेकिन ये बस कुछ बनकर रह जाते हैं. बाकी बची फिल्म इन हिस्सों के साथ इंसाफ नहीं कर पाती. काफी समय बाद अक्षय को फिज़िकल कॉमेडी करते देखा. प्रियदर्शन की फिल्में देखी होंगी तो बताने की ज़रूरत नहीं कि उनकी कॉमेडी टाइमिंग कैसी है. यहां भी आपको वो दिखेगा. उनके हिस्से कुछ अच्छे इमोशनल सीन्स आए, जहां वो अपना काम कर देते हैं. उनकी बहनों का रोल निभाया है सादिया खतीब, सहजमीन कौर, दीपिका खन्ना और स्मृति श्रीकांत ने. दुर्भाग्यवश, उनके किरदारों को फिल्म में ठीक से नहीं यूज़ किया गया. ये एक बड़ी शिकायत है. कुछ ऐसा ही भूमि पेडणेकर के साथ भी है, जिन्होंने फिल्म में सपना नाम का किरदार निभाया. बेसिकली, सपना केदारनाथ की लव इंट्रेस्ट है. फिल्म की लेंथ बढ़ाकर इन किरदारों के आगे-पीछे की कहानी और ढंग से दिखाई जा सकती थी. आनंद एल राय की फिल्मों के किरदार पूर्ण नहीं होते. न ही टिपिकल हीरोनुमा होते हैं. वो अपनी खामियां अपने साथ लेकर चलते हैं. अक्षय कुमार का किरदार लाला भी ऐसा ही है. अपनी बहनों का हर मुमकिन तरीके से ध्यान रखने की कोशिश करेगा. कम-से-कम जैसा उसे सोसाइटी ने सिखाया है. बस शादी वाले पक्ष पर उसे कुछ सुनाई-दिखाई नहीं पड़ता. फिल्म उसकी खामियों को उजागर रूप से नहीं दिखाना चाहती, जितना वो उसके बलिदानों पर बात करती है. औरतों के लिए वोकल होने वाली ‘रक्षा बंधन’ अपनी सुई उस विचारधारा पर लाकर खड़ी कर देती है जहां किसी आदमी से अपनी बहनों के लिए बलिदान देना अपेक्षित हो. अपनी खुशियों को उनके लिए अग्नि करना अपेक्षित हो. फिल्म की कहानी सेट है चांदनी चौक में. ये चांदनी चौक करण जौहर के यूनिवर्स से नहीं आता, जहां की सड़कें खाली रहती हों. इसी चांदनी चौक में एक चाट की दुकान है. इसका मालिक है केदारनाथ, जिसे सब लाला भी बुलाते हैं. लाला की दुकान की खासियत हैं गोलगप्पे. लेकिन उनसे भी पहले आपकी नज़र पड़ती है उसकी दुकान की टैगलाइन पर– चाट खाइए, बेटा पाइए. गोलगप्पे को देखकर जितना जी ललचाया था, वो यह पढ़कर घिना जाता है. खैर, लाला का काम वगैरह सब सही चल रहा है. उनके जीवन में कहीं समस्या है तो ये कि घर में चार बहनें रखी हैं. रहती नहीं हैं, रखी हैं. उन चारों की किसी भी तरह शादी करवानी है. लाला उनकी शादी करवा पाता है या नहीं, उस दौरान खुद में कुछ बदलाव महसूस करता है या नहीं. यही पूरी फिल्म की मोटा-माटी कहानी है. जब ‘रक्षा बंधन’ का ट्रेलर आया था तब जनता कन्फ्यूज़्ड थी. ट्रेलर को देखकर लग रहा था कि फिल्म इमोशन के लेवल पर खरी उतरेगी. फिर उसमें ऐसे डायलॉग सुने कि चार महीने में बेटी को निपटा दूंगा. यानी उसकी शादी करवा दूंगा. कहानी का हीरो अपनी बहनों के लिए दहेज इकट्ठा करने में जुटा हुआ है. ऐसे में लगा कि बेटियां पराया धन होती हैं वाला घिसा-पिटा नैरेटिव क्यों धकेल रहे हैं. इन सब बातों के बीच एक बात पर भरोसा था, फिल्म के लेखक कनिका ढिल्लों और हिमांशु शर्मा पर. ये दोनों सेंसिबल लोग हैं. बेटियां बोझ हैं वाली कहानी तो नहीं ही दिखाएंगे. हिमांशु और कनिका ने लाला और उसके आसपास के किरदारों के ज़रिए प्रॉब्लमैटिक या दकियानूसी चीज़ों को एक्स्ट्रीम पर ले जाने की कोशिश की. अक्षय कुमार. वो एक्टर जिनके लिए कहा जाता है कि साल में चार फिल्में करते हैं. उनकी पिछली दो फिल्में ‘बच्चन पांडे’ और ‘सम्राट पृथ्वीराज’ नहीं चली. फिर जब पता चला कि उनकी अगली रिलीज़ आनंद एल राय की फिल्म ‘रक्षा बंधन’ होगी, तब कहा गया कि वो फिर से फीलिंग्स वाले सिनेमा की ओर लौट रहे हैं. ‘रक्षा बंधन’ अब रिलीज़ हो चुकी है. इमोशन, कहानी, एक्टिंग आदि जैसे पॉइंट्स पर फिल्म कितनी मज़बूत है, आज के रिव्यू में उसी पर बात करेंगे.

It is hard to believe that anybody would make a film such as this in 2022. The girls of Raksha Bandhan, like the film itself, are caught in a time warp.

The others are put on the backburner as the focus of the film shifts to the climax, which is as slapdash as anything else that the plot cobbles together. The star is in virtually every frame, raving and ranting. One would have loved to discuss at length the work of cinematographer K.U. Mohanan, who vividly captures Chandni Chowk in all its chaos and clamour. The humour is coarse and the emotions border on the strident. While a chunk of Raksha Bandhan hinges around Kedar and Sapna's now-on, now-off relationship, another key strand of the story rests on what the sisters have in store. The poor man's plight is meant to leave the audience in tears. Not for once does it pause to ponder over how insensitive all the noise it makes sounds. Yet, constantly frothing at the mouth as it spouts inanities, the film quickly careens out of control. Indeed, those that are bound to be appalled by the film's archaic assumptions will be tearing their hair out in despair. This guy's 'magic' golgappas have the power to deliver 'miracles', but his attempts to find matches for his sisters do not yield instant results. Headlined by Akshay Kumar (Bollywood's poster boy of all things sanskari) in the guise of an Old Delhi chaat vendor who peddles golgappas to expectant women who desire a male child, Raksha Bandhan is aimed at warming the cockles of our hearts. Happiness in this hero's Chandni Chowk household rides on the institution of marriage.

Rai crafts numerous sequences in which characters rush about from one end of the screen to the other. He has been in love with Sapna (Bhumi Pednekar) forever, but has told her to wait until he arranges the funds to marry off every one of his sisters. Kedarnath’s self-inflicted woes spill ever so often out of his home onto the street. None of the women appears to have a mind, let alone a spine. There’s a transactional quality to a narrative set in a mercantile middle-class milieu; a feeling of a manufactured crisis whose roots are barely explored. In a corner of Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi, chaat seller Kedarnath (Akshay Kumar) is serving paani-puri whose consumption guarantees male babies.

At least you can't blame Aanand L. Rai for not being consistent: his last film Atrangi Re was the worst film of last year and his latest film Raksha Bandhan is most definitely the worst film of this year so far. I'm not naïve enough to think that Hindi film screenwriters don't exploit the idea of progressive politics or feminism as social currency but Dhillon really takes it up a notch with Raksha Bandhan. For someone who seems to have based her entire personality on self-admittedly writing "strong women," the misguided gendered politics of Raksha Bandhan is immensely telling. Still, the hypocrisy of the film is explicitly made clear only in the film's closing minute when a sudden change of transformation makes Lala come to the realisation that women aren't disposable beings even though he spends the entirety of the film doing just that. If Sharma and Dhillon really want to take up important social issues that concern women's place in society, maybe the next time around, they could do as much as ensure that the story revolved around women instead of treating them as an afterthought. In fact, what I still can't wrap my head around is the epic levels of delusion and ignorance that must have taken to write, greenlit, and actually make this movie. In fact, the film's actual albeit unintentional humour comes from its hypocritical moral righteousness: one scene has Kumar vomit out a monologue about feminism and a woman's choice and then confidently order his girlfriend Sapna (Bhumi Pednekar) to marry the man picked by her father so as to not let him down. In that, he doesn't say dialogue as much as he screeches and yells them. It's no surprise that she is Lala's favourite sister for in his eyes; being subservient is a feminine skill. Set in Delhi's Chandni Chowk, presumably because Rai and writer Himanshu Sharma are done exploiting every small town setting possible, Raksha Bandhan tracks Lala Kedarnath (Akshay Kumar), the older brother of an orphaned household. Worse still is a film that begins by thanking Barjatya for keeping "Indian traditions and family values" alive in Hindi cinema. Still, in case you're wondering which Indian tradition or family value it might specifically have its eyes on reclaiming, the grating, obnoxious, and unbelievably regressive Raksha Bandhan revolves around dowry. The fourth sister's burden is simply that she is a fair, attractive, skinny, and domesticated girl.

But, one criticism about the drama in this film is it never arrives with a proper buildup. At this speed, he’ll have to bring aliens to North India to do something new in his world. When I thought Seema Pahwa’s character will finally bring in some laughs, she disappears in the second half. Humour rarely worked for me, though there are some good dramatic portions, especially in the second half. Himanshu Sharma & Kanika Dhillon’s regressive approach to the story isn’t the only issue with the film, it’s also the extremely over-the-top treatment given to its narrative. He promises without realising three out of four of them are a mess and no one in Delhi wants to get married to them without a colossal dowry.

अक्षय कुमार अभिनय में अपने चित परिचित अंदाज़ में ही नज़र आए हैं. इमोशनल दृश्यों में वह जमे हैं जबकि कॉमेडी में इस बार वह बहुत लाउड हो गए हैं.फ़िल्म में उनका लुक भी उनके साथ इस बार भी न्याय नहीं कर पाया हिमउनकी मूंछे इस फ़िल्म के भी कई दृश्यों में अजीबोगरोब सी लगती है.दाढ़ी में सफेद बाल है लेकिन मूंछे एकदम काली क्योंकि वो नकली हैं.पूरी फिल्म अक्षय कुमार की है.बाकी के किरदारों को गढ़ने में ज़्यादा ध्यान नहीं दिया गया है.जिस वजह से वह स्क्रीन पर ज़्यादा छाप नहीं छोड़ पाए हैं . फ़िल्म की सारी लड़कियों की ज़िंदगी का मकसद सिर्फ शादी ही है और यह शादी आसान भी नहीं है, क्योंकि अपनी बहनों की शादी के लिए केदार को ढेर सारे दहेज की ज़रूरत है. बाप-दादाओं के लिए अजीबोगरीब लिए कर्ज के लोन को वह अब तक चुका रहा है.उसपर इतना दहेज कैसे जमा पाएगा. क्या अक्षय अपनी बहनों के लिए दहेज इकट्ठा कर पाएगा.यही मेलोड्रामा से भरी फ़िल्म की कहानी है. फ़िल्म की कहानी दहेज जैसे मुद्दे पर चोट करने के लिए बनायी गयी है लेकिन फ़िल्म में यह मुद्दा उस तरह से प्रभावी बन नहीं पाया है .इंटरवल के बाद उम्मीद जगी थी लेकिन सबकुछ मेलोड्रामा और मसखरेपन में ही खत्म हो गया. आमतौर पर निर्देशक आनंद एल राय की फिल्मों में महिला पात्र बहुत सशक्त होती हैं, लेकिन इस फ़िल्म में उन्हें हर दूसरे दृश्य में कमतर महसूस करवाया गया है. मोटापे, उनके रंग से लेकर उनके कपड़े पहनने के ढंग तक सभी का मज़ाक बनाया गया है. सबसे बुरा पहलू ये है कि एक वक्त पर इन लड़कियों को भी ये लगने लगता है कि यह उनकी खामी है और ये इस पर काम करेंगी. आखिर के कुछ दृश्यों में ही महिला सशक्तिकरण सही ढंग से परदे पर आ पाया है लेकिन तब तक बहुत देर हो चुकी होती है. फ़िल्म की सिनेमेटोग्राफी अच्छी है.दिल्ली के चांदनी चौक के सेट को बखूबी गढ़ा गया है. गीत-संगीत औसत है तो फ़िल्म के संवाद बहुत ज़्यादा रिग्रेसिव हैं. फ़िल्म के एक दृश्य में एक संवाद है कि जो भी लड़का इस मोहल्ले में किसी लड़की को छेड़ेगा, उस लड़के को उस लड़की के साथ शादी करनी पड़ेगी. यह संवाद फ़िल्म के नायक के हैं . कमाल की बात है कि यह 70 या 80 के बैकड्रॉप पर बनी फिल्म नहीं है यह आज के समय की फ़िल्म है. फ़िल्म से जुड़े मेकर्स यह दलील दे सकते हैं कि यह फ़िल्म दहेज जैसे अहम मुद्दे पर संदेश देती है ,लेकिन जिस तरह से फ़िल्म का ट्रीटमेंट और स्क्रीनप्ले है वह इस मुद्दे को ना सिर्फ हल्का कर गया बल्कि महिला पात्रों को बहुत कमज़ोर बना गया है. कुलमिलाकर मामला रक्षा में हत्या वाला हो गया है. संजीदा विषय वाली इस फ़िल्म का स्क्रीनप्ले और किरदार बेहद असंवेदनशील हैं. फ़िल्म की कहानी दिल्ली के चांदनी चौक के रहने वाले केदार(अक्षय कुमार) की है. जिसकी गोलगप्पे की दुकान है. 80 के दशक की फिल्मों की तरह उसने अपनी मरती मां को वचन दिया है कि वह चारों बहनों की शादी करने के बाद ही अपनी शादी करेगा. उसकी प्रेमिका सपना (भूमि पेंडेकर) भी उसके साथ शादी के इंतज़ार में बैठी है.

Taking on social evils like dowry and trying to gloss over its ugliness by only focusing on a brother’s plight is another way the film makes light of a grave issue. It is neither a film about loving one's sisters, nor is it funny and it definitely doesn’t have the IQ to convey a social message. The film wants to cater to the lowest common denominator by regurgitating stale old lines and jokes, and still fails to elicit a laugh. As for the others - one is fat, one is dusky and the youngest is a tomboy. There is an elaborate scene where Akshay Kumar, after beating up the local boys who whistled at his sister, gets his hands on a mic and screams at a bewildered crowd that anyone who eve teases girls in the area will have to marry them. The conditioning is complete and all are hardwired to take “agni ke saat phere”. The sisters exist to wait for the brother to procure a prospective match!

Consistency in the narrative is one of the biggest strengths of the film. While many think it's a thing that's more prevalent in the rural sectors and the cities have advanced on this front, it's just not the case. It's loaded with humour in the first half and there are some genuinely funny and heart-warming scenes including constant nudging from the sisters, teasing their only brother, Sapna's desperate attempts to lure Lala and so on. And that's the big task at hand for the sisters, as described by matchmaker Shanu (Seema Pahwa), are a mixed variety. With his latest release, Raksha Bandhan, Akshay only proves that if a film has its heart in the right place, it will connect with the audiences. This is not the first time the actor has done a film that's relevant and has a strong social message — Raksha Bandhan touches upon the issue of dowry system in India. But it's the way director Aanand L Rai chooses to narrate the story, weaving together the most delicate threads to deliver a strong message, that does the trick.
