And something about that, actually — and I’m sure other actors have said this — taps into this thing that you do in a theater rehearsal, where you’re imagining that might be where the bed is, or you’re imagining the fourth wall or whatever. But then as soon as I am She-Hulk and I’m in this costume, that does kind of separate me from people — puts me on platforms so I take up a different space. She’s aware of all the mechanics of it, and engages with that. And there’s something about her awareness that maintains from her Jen form to She-Hulk, where she has this hyper awareness — it is part of her superpower — that also is now part of her connection to the audience. Did you look at that show as a tonal inspiration for what you’re doing? I feel like that set me up very well to step into something so technical and do it with an awareness that it can be actually very liberating. Jennifer obviously notices a difference in how people treat her as She-Hulk in the show. Or, alternatively, you’ve got this stick on your helmet that has like a frozen She-Hulk smiling face, and they’re talking to that. From 2013 to 2017, she embodied over a dozen clones on the sci-fi series “Orphan Black,” and won an Emmy for it in the process. Sometimes you’re walking on a platform, if you’re working with an actor who’s not also a Hulk, so that their eyeline is actually looking up at where your face would be. She talked with Variety about the technical challenges of the show, the scene she could barely get through, and why her biggest inspirations were “Legally Blonde” and “Seinfeld.” It was so funny on every page, and it was super weird.

And it’s not necessarily something that she comes to in the snap moment that it takes for her to become a Hulk. It was total play and total imagination time, in a way, and when do adults get to do that? It’s as meta as you can possibly get, and what’s more meta than discussing the fact that the Hulk in [The Incredible Hulk, 2008] was played by a totally different actor? That’s the reason I took this part. So I got to bring that to this character, She-Hulk, and explore her in a more internal way. As much as her transformation is outwardly visible, her internal stays the same, and so that’s a bit of a difference. In general, when you first left Orphan and you went on to play just one character, was it jarring at first? He’s just so great, and the only thing he ever did was make me feel like whatever I was doing was correct. Do Jen Walters and She-Hulk feel like a walk in the park compared to that previous experience? But at the same time, Orphan Black allowed me such a playground to stretch these muscles of differentiating character and make me feel that there was so much possibility in what any one person can be. I just wanted to beat [Deadpool],” Maslany jokes to The Hollywood Reporter. It’s quite fitting since She-Hulk got the fourth-wall jump on the Merc with a Mouth in the comics, too.

She brings a sense of joy, frustration and vulnerability to the musclebound character that will ensure the show remains watchable, even if it grows slack beneath her as was the case with Orphan Black. It is no doubt jarring, but it doesn't take us out of the show. While it took Bruce 15 years of conflict, negotiation, lullabies and yoga before settling into the current Smart Hulk avatar, Jen and She-Hulk learn to co-exist by the third Hulk-out. Considering Ruffalo’s character didn’t get a sub-franchise of movies like some of the other Avengers in the MCU, the episode offers a little more emotional context into the pain, trauma and loneliness he had to suffer through before Bruce and Hulk reconciled and became one. As is common with first episodes, this one too is burdened with doing a lot of expository heavy-lifting. As a setup for a nine-episode season, the premiere works well enough as a primer on the titular character, while introducing us to the other key players (including a superpowered baddie played by Jameela Jamil). The series, which is already getting comparisons to Ally McBeal, has a self-consciously feminine log line, being the only Marvel production to include the main characters' relationship status -- single -- in its official blurb on Disney+, and that's reflected in characters like Elaine from Seinfeld and Elle Woods from Legally Blonde.

It's "this amazing double meta thing that the show is doing that feels very resonant to me and very kind of alive as a woman," Maslany tells TheWrap.

“Just Jen’s transformation, her ability to stay in the same consciousness and to stay herself throughout this transformation, says so much about how she, as a human woman, has moved through the world, and how she’s dealt with her emotions, and how she’s had to repress them or push them down or control them.
