Matt Smith on Playing Prince Daemon in 'House of the Dragon' (The New York Times)

Smith's character, Prince Daemon, was an agent of chaos in the series premiere, but “he's got a strange moral compass of his own,” the actor said.

He lives down in the belly of the beast, and he lives back in the Red Keep, in palaces and all that. The thing with Daemon is he just keeps pushing — pushing the envelope, pushing the boundaries, pushing the rules that were in place around him. It’s always just felt like a very instinctual trust and bond between the two. They’re really the only two people in the whole of the kingdom who Daemon will concede to. You know that in the world that George has created, these elements and these scenes will probably be a part of it at some point. And probably he feels a certain kinship with her that he’s maybe lost with his brother. Is he doing it in pursuit of good things? Is it the throne?” It’s not. As the potential heir to the Targaryen dynasty and its royal seat, the Iron Throne, Daemon is a dragon-rider, and a dangerous one at that. When you speak a different language, it accesses a different part of you. I preferred being on a horse with a sword in the hand.” Stories like this are possible because of our deep commitment to original reporting, produced by a global staff of over 1,700 journalists who have all dedicated themselves to helping you understand the world.

And such a strange moral compass — which is warped, but it is a moral compass, in his own way.” The brothel scene is certainly one way of showing how devoted Daemon’s men are, and how much their relationship is, in some ways, built on mutual respect. Though the showrunners have said [they plan to “pull back”](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/house-of-the-dragon-news-1235184887/) over time on prolific sex scenes that earned [Game of Thrones a certain reputation](https://www.polygon.com/game-of-thrones/2019/5/7/18535611/game-of-thrones-sansa-stark-hound-season-8), the first chapter of House isn’t a huge break from the tradition. Matt Smith and Milly Alcock on Daemon and Rhaenyra's Ambiguous ... (Den of Geek US)

House of the Dragon stars Matt Smith and Milly Alcock discuss the implications of Prince Daemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen's first scene.

But I still wanted the scene to focus on the relationship, and the Valyrian just being a bit of the artwork in the space.” Says Alcock, “I wanted to make sure the Valyrian added to the sense of closeness that Daemon and Rhaenyra had. When her uncle comes back to town, and Charlie is reunited with Charlie, he also comes bearing gifts of illicit origin (and perhaps intention?). But he’s a liability and Viserys is always picking up the pieces when Daemon fucks up.” So one might shudder at what Viserys, or the ever opportunistic lords of Westeros, might think if they learned Daemon is romancing the new heir apparent. Indeed, the relationship between Daemon and King Viserys is a complex one. When we chat with Smith, he at first gives a joking put-on of “you’ll have to watch the show, eh?” when we ask about the dynamic between Daemon and Rhaenyra. And as the actor who plays that character, Milly Alcock acknowledges there might be an attraction there, manipulated or otherwise. The episode might end with Daemon being banished, but as Smith insists, “Everything is about his brother. I think everything to do with Rhaenyra is related back to somehow getting the attention of his brother.” So by design, the House of the Dragon scene raises questions about these new characters… Take for instance the first big scene between [Matt Smith](https://www.denofgeek.com/matt-smith/)’s Prince Daemon Targaryen and Milly Alcock’s Princess Rhaenyra.
