South Africa won the toss and chose to bat against England. South Africa won the toss in the second Test under cloudy skies at Emirates Old Trafford … and chose to bat first, in a decision designed to maximise the impact of their twin-spin attack in ...
In his third over, more steep bounce on a good length kissed the edge of the bat as Petersen got squared up with flat feet, and Joe Root at first slip swallowed the edge to leave South Africa wobbing at 41 for 3. Van der Dussen reviewed, but the decision stood, with DRS returning an umpire's call verdict on both impact and the top of the leg bail. One over later, van der Dussen was gone as well, to an each-way bet of an lbw decision from umpire Chris Gaffaney. Markram swung lustily across the line, but managed only a steepling top-edge to Foakes, running back towards fine leg. But Stokes, in a typically golden-armed intervention, had other ideas. It was a short-lived reprieve, however.

26.4 Maharaj to Crawley, FOUR, full and down leg once again, Crawley sweeps and times it superbly past backward square to his right. England, obviously, had the better conditions to bat but lack of discipline from the visitors allowed them to score freely and thanks to 20 extras, the deficit looks almost negligible now. Will England continue to play aggressively or will we see a different approach? Despite removing three wickets inside 15 overs, the Proteas failed to exert pressure and will hope for some helpful conditions first thing tomorrow morning. The sun made its appearance at the start of second session and it looked a completely different ball game from there. Elgar opted to bat in hope that his team would make best use of the batting conditions, but, as it turned out, their top five were sent packing in the first session with England bowlers ruling the roost, thanks to movement on and off the pitch.
England were as magnificent with the ball as wasteful they had been in the last Test, James Anderson striking inside the first five overs after Dean Elgar ...
South Africa were 77/5 at Lunch, and brief Rabada resistance aside largely continued in that vein afterwards, all out for a paltry 151. In fact, Robinson should have had Elgar excellently caught at short leg by Ollie Pope, but he sloppily overstepped, one of the three no balls he bowled in an otherwise excellent return to the side. South Africa’s decision to play two spinners no doubt influenced their decision to bat first, hoping for an advantage bowling last in the Test. Popular gadgets including laptop, tablet and mobile specifications, features, prices, comparison. England’s crumbly top order still found time for a wobble of their own – only serving to reinforce the idea that South Africa choosing to bat first was madness – but by the close, they were 111/3, only 40 behind and returning home forever grateful for Elgar’s decision in the morning. A team’s spinner getting the token last over before lunch is a well-worn cricketing trope, although here, South Africa managed to put a new and from their point of view almost certainly unwelcome twist on it, with Simon Harmer finding himself out in the middle with his pads on having to bat the last over of the session. Even with Robinson’s efforts largely unrewarded, England still found ways to prosper with the ball, Stuart Broad seemingly not smarting from the decision to take him off new ball duties – picking up the wickets of Elgar and Keegan Petersen coming in as the first change, to reduce South Africa to 40/3 inside the first 15 overs. Reprieved from having to immediately humiliate themselves with the bat, England were as magnificent with the ball as wasteful they had been in the last Test, James Anderson striking inside the first five overs and the side never really looking back from that moment. [Kagiso Rabada](https://www.firstpost.com/tag/kagiso-rabada), so they must have been delighted to find themselves in the field at the start of play, pouching catches behind the wicket and watching opposition batsmen forlornly trudge off the pitch instead of themselves. After a welcomingly slack bowling performance by England in the series’ opening Test at Lord’s last week, South Africa decided to reciprocate here with their own act of generosity, inserting themselves under cloudy Manchester skies and letting England’s bowlers have a good go at them. England were as magnificent with the ball as wasteful they had been in the last Test, James Anderson striking inside the first five overs after Dean Elgar asked them to bowl first.

Even Jonny Bairstow, who walked to the crease with the score on 53 for four, was pinned to the crease by Rabada, and properly hurried by Nortje until his feet started to move. Such is the precarious hold of Crawley on his place in the side there was a cheer around the ground when he clipped Lungi Ngidi for a single to get off the mark. So, in the words of Crowded House, Crawley was at least taking the weather with him. Consistency is subordinate to brilliance under this regime, which means failures are tolerated on the grounds that a potent knock is just around the corner. Crawley might have been casting a line with a fishing rod so far in front of his wooden front foot was the willow. There was no reference to the condition of the ball, its age, speed or quality of the bowler Williamson had faced. The England bowlers did their bit inviting England’s top order to put into practice the commands of the leadership and right the wrongs of the Lord’s shellacking. He was proven right at Lord’s but his hubris got the better of him here in Manchester when he chose to take on England’s attack under cloud cover so deep the floodlights were on from the start of the day. Whatever the reason, bowlers are not happy and Broad was the latest to voice his displeasure. Ollie Robinson had Dean Elgar dropped on five, caught off a no-ball and the wicket of Kyle Verreyenne overturned on review. The Dukes brand is only used in England and is produced by just one manufacturer in East London who have admitted their 2022 batch are not up to the usual standard. The reason why is a mystery, although Dukes themselves have admitted it may be down to a herd of the cows they use being poorly fed and producing lower-quality leather.
