Dibyendu Bhattacharya’s Martin Ekka finally comes into view when a crime is added to the larger crime of hoodwinking the public. Naveen hires his own version of Prashant Kishor in the form of data analyst Kalpana (Neha Chauhan). Outraged by his wife’s perceived betrayal, Bheema works hard to regain power with the help of his factotum Mishra (Pramod Pathak) and brother-in-law Sanyasi (Kumar Saurabh). Maharani, created by Subhash Kapoor, is loosely inspired by the political churn in Bihar in the 1990s. Martin Ekka (Dibyendu Bhattacharya) would rather be playing Mark Antony on the stage but is instead plonked behind a desk, at the other side of which sits an unlikely empress. But as the second season of Maharani reveals, uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.

And that is the biggest takeaway from this SonyLIV show. The moments of her bonding with Rani are heartwarming. The layers of his character take the most time to be peeled off. She brings in the right amount of confidence into her body language, never going over the top. For the longest time it seems she is also watching the puppet show as an outsider, instead of pulling the strings herself. Political thrillers are one of the most popular genres on OTT, and Maharani is definitely among those that have managed to capture the audience’s imagination.

The current season is better than season 1 in every way. Maharani 2 turns out to be one of the best political series in terms of explaining how the politicians play their dirty games. The trailer described Bihar in the best way possible. In season 2, Rani is more confident, and her lack of education doesn’t stop her from taking big decisions. Maharani Season 1 was about Bheema’s fall and how Rani Bharti became the CM from a simple housewife. Created by Subhash Kapoor, the second season is directed by Ravindra Gautam.

It is a worthy addition to the political thriller genre as its makers seem to be aware of the world in which they have set their show. Besides a gripping script and entertaining dialogues, another reason why Maharani 2 is a notch above other web shows of today, is the terrific cast.
