Actress Shefali Shah and director Tanuj Chopra discuss DCP Vartika's journey, social issues and pandemic impact in 2nd season of hit show.
Shah was well known before Delhi Crime for roles in films such as Satya, Monsoon Wedding and Gandhi, My Father, and is now one of the busiest actors in India with recent roles including Netflix movie Darlings, alongside Alia Bhatt. As with the first season, DC2 went heavy on research into the real-life crimes and characters it was depicting or at least amalgamating: “Before we wrote a word of the script, we went through documents and case files and interviewed reporters who covered the crimes when they were happening. “But what happened during lockdown is that it gave us time to step back and re-evaluate whatever was created,” says Shah. It started shooting before the pandemic but was disrupted a few times as India endured two waves of the pandemic in mid-2020 and spring 2021. The show touches on a range of hot button social issues – inequality and violence in Indian society and attitudes towards India’s tribal communities, who were connected to the Kacha-Baniyan gangs, but for decades have suffered from discrimination and economic disadvantage. The heavily-researched series followed the original case closely (the police characters were fictional but inspired by real people) and was praised for its realism and sensitivity, winning a string of awards including an Emmy for best international drama in 2020.

Delhi Crime, the Netflix crime drama series starring Shefali Shah, premiered in 2019. It went on to win the first-ever International Emmy award for India.
The moment when the accused is ready to narrate the crime, Chaturvedi drags a chair and sits in front of the accused, face to face, looking directly into his eyes. And, Chaturvedi is looking out of the window with teary eyes. But, Neeti Singh (played by Dugal), an IPS trainee, who worked on the case closely with Chaturvedi and the survivor stands far away as she is in no mood to celebrate. One of the top moments of the series was the one when Chaturvedi visits the hospital for the first time as soon as she hears of the case. When she speaks to the doctor to find out about what happened to the survivor and comes across the survivor’s parents, she stands still with eyes wide open in disbelief. Ahead of its release, let us remember the top five moments from its first season.
The team of Delhi Crime 2 – Shefali Shah, Rasika Dugal, Rajesh Tailang and director Tanuj Chopra – break down the popular show's second season.
It has taken three years for the second season to come out. Here, it is not as simple as there is a crime and there are culprits and evidence. Delhi Crime season 2 is a six-part series that premieres on Netflix from August 26. First and foremost, there is no competition that this has to match up to that. The crime does not take a backseat but the characters do come to the foreground as well. We are not saying everything is just hunky dory, they are spotless and that they are doing their job perfectly well. This just has to be good in its own space and I am very proud of what we have made. There is no challenge for the actors, no challenge for me. But when everyone is back together on set, all the stimuli are there on set, it becomes slightly easier.” In season one, there was a crime that shook the entire nation and the world and how this team reacted to it. He says, “It’s not always that your character is where you left him in the last season. [Rajesh Tailang](https://www.hindustantimes.com/topic/rajesh-tailang), who plays inspector Bhupendra Singh, says it is tough to get back in the character’s head space again but being on set with the same team helps.

“Neeti’s relationship with her Madam-Sir has evolved so much that when I see them together in a frame, it forms the essence of the entire Delhi Crime plot. This time around, in season 2, the Delhi Police will be seen investigating a multiple murder case involving senior citizens, led by their very own ‘Madam Sir’. we wonder if crimes happen because of the society that we live in or is it happening because of the disparity between the rich and the poor. In the first season of ‘DC’, Varthika becomes a hero. The first season dealt with a case that we were all familiar with and shocked by. ‘Delhi Crime’ was very strong on paper and there was a lot of research on paper. You don’t have that advantage in the second season … A: With season one, there was a lot of research that was required on a script level. The beauty about this series is that you don’t have to watch the first season to enjoy its second season. The Netflix plans in India are as follows: Writers are Mayank Tewari, Shubhra Swarup, Vidit Tripathi, Ensia Mirza, Sanyuktha Chawla Shaikh and Virat Basoya. Mumbai: This Friday, Shefali Shah — and those eyes that speak even without words — returns to reprise her tough cop Vartika Chaturvedi in Season 2 of Delhi Crime.
Ahead of the premiere of 'Delhi Crime' Season 2, Shefali Shah discusses the challenge of meeting the high standards set by the show's first season.
The actor admits she is now more familiar with the character but that comes with a clause. As she opens up about the character and the conflicts she has to deal with, the actor gets emotional. In the first season, the focus was on nabbing the criminals, with my character fighting against time. I ask what her thoughts were when first approached with the idea of making a second season of Delhi Crime. “The story of the second season also happens over a short span. The technicality of the performance meant she would keep a close tab on details such as the character’s state of mind during a specific point in the story, how long the character might have been awake, the last breakthrough in the case, and such factors that would contribute to her headspace.

It is very difficult to enumerate the USPs of Netflix’s Delhi Crime’s eagerly awaited second season. I love how the franchise is shaping up to be about women rising in the police force without anyone pointing out their gender in a male-dominated profession. The last episode, as a result, ends up looking like it is on some speed track and refuses to slow down giving us little to no room to absorb some major things that were built so well until episode 4. Her conflicts with her married life and the fact that things aren’t settling well, gives her an entirely new layer and that is so good. The art department excels again as they create a world that is lived in and one can connect too. Dialogues by Sanyukta Chawla Shaikh are good but the ratio of English to Hindi is not balanced well. A lot of it was already known to us and the visual retelling of it made us connect even more and empathize with the victim and everyone involved in giving her justice. I can worship the sheer talent this lady has consistently brought to the table in the last couple of years. The marginalised of Delhi are biting the elite who are unaware and almost comical about the struggles they face. But 150 years of oppression and partiality has conditioned minds to think of them as criminals and devoid them of their right to have a life. While the moral compass was at test last time, it is the class system and inherit casteism and oppression at full display this time. So after tackling the haunting and traumatizing season 1 of the show where the Nirbhaya case was the center plot, DCP Vartika Chaturvedi (Shefali Shah) and her team are on to their next case. Begins season 2 of Delhi Crime with a new director.
Shefali Shah is back as 'Madam Sir' Vartika. But director Tanuj Chopra shows that even senior police personnel hold biases.
Even Vartika Chaturvedi is not free of biases despite being a level-headed and sensible DCP of the South district. The script is tight and keeps you on the edge, especially if you are someone who lives in Delhi. The focus is really on the investigation rather than just providing a sense of thrill. She is probably the most relatable one in the array of police personnel we see in Delhi Crime. What has stood out for Delhi Crime is its refusal to use voyeurism in its depiction of crime. Netflix’s Delhi Crime: Season 2 brings forth the ugly side of class disparity that exists in the national capital and its repercussions on crime.

The degree of authenticity, despite the compulsion of leaving us on a cliff-hanger at the end of each episode and a few contrivances, is admirable. The breakthrough comes just at the right time, and the denouement is powerful. And some of the lines the characters exchange at the dinner table, citing figures etc, are much too explicatory. The point of class and privilege, and that certain tribes still continue to be seen as criminals is, however, worthy of being raised, and we see one cop at least treating them with empathy, even if it comes a little late. Which, really, is the only reason why we subject ourselves to the horrific sights of the dead, so that those of us who still live, stay grateful of our privileges, and of the sheer luck of not being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It provides not just blood and gore, of which there is plenty, but also an examination of the underlying reasons why some perfectly ordinary humans turn into pitiless killers.

Though Delhi Crime: Season 2 does pick up pace after the second episode, and keeps you hooked to the screen till the end. As for the performances in Delhi Crime 2, Shefali Shah gives a very controlled performance as DCP Vartika Chaturvedi, and has effortlessly portrayed the character’s vulnerability onscreen. DOP David Bolen’s lens manages to capture every emotion to the T, and that combining with Shefali Shah’s acting prowess particularly makes her close-up shots a visual treat. While one would expect crime dramas to maintain a certain pace in the narrative for an edge of the seat experience, this one takes a while to speed up. I suppose that is because the intention of the makers was not really to solve the crime quickly, but to use the story to share important messages and point of views along the way. They are also neatly arranged in the story for the audience to grasp on.
Delhi Crime Season 2 review: Informed, politically charged show with Shefali Shah Rasika Dugal Netflix in top form.
Or in a country riven with caste, class and gender stigma, where the only thing separating the good from the evil is which side of privilege you are standing on, Delhi Crime can be viewed as a triumph of a police case but the failure of India. The series, however, is most riveting when rendering a clear-eyed understanding of gender, mining their rage and aspiration to craft shades of morality. Chaturvedi is still referred to as "madam-sir", a conflation of who she is and who people want her to be. Its very design and politics lend a commentary on the current disenfranchised state of Muslims in India even when all the characters are steadfastly Hindus. In its retelling, Delhi Crime departs from the source material, using the premise of veneration of the system as a smokescreen to spotlight its social blind spots. Who then is a hero and who is the brute? When members of the DNTs are held in custody, Danish Husain's character informs that other people from the caste are being vilified on social media and losing jobs owing to widespread apprehension. Much like the way Chaddha clubs the DNTs as a cohort, the second season, hewing closely to the first in its depiction of Chaturvedi and her team striving to the right thing even when higher officials just want "faces," seems to ask: in our rightful apathy towards the police personnel, aren't we too guilty of generalising all as a single entity? The man, Chaddha, goes to Shahdara and arrests every member of the Denotified Tribes living in the East Delhi district. Limited budgetary propositions, lack of personal lives of personnel and constant negotiation of a group of people in uniform trying to do the right thing even when they were pressured to "do the thing" were pushed to the fore. Detailing experience from when he was in the force, 'Moon gazer' is his first-hand account of witnessing rampant killings in South Delhi during the 1990s on half moon nights (hence the title), which concludes with the arrest of the members from the tribe. Cinematographer David Bolen (Soni) swathes Delhi in impregnable gloominess, grasping the despondency of winter and transforming it into a site of Nordic Noir.

What Delhi Crime 2 manages to do better than the first season is show the personal lives of the team, and bring to fore their issues and personalities. Delhi Crime is a bit better in that it often finds ways to balance it all out, even if just a bit. Delhi Crime 2 is not a perfect show. Delhi Crime season 2 premieres on Netflix on August 26. Of course, the show was made well and that was the icing on the cake. It is not a heartless police procedural but a show about human emotions--greed, fear, frustration, and determination. But in OTT space, the second season often needs to outdo the first in terms of scale. But to put it rather inelegantly, no crime can ‘top’ the 2012 Delhi gang rape in sheer barbarism and the emotions it evoked in the Indian populace. Why the gang is back after two decades and in Delhi of all the places is something the team must figure out, and also catch the culprits, before they leave a long trail of bodies behind. Season 1 was about the most grotesque, shocking, and talked-about crime in modern Indian history. The heartfelt performances and the social underpinnings of crime make this police procedural a worthwhile experience.
The series chooses to remain in the present, where leaking the CCTV footage of the crime to the media results in suspension. The idea of going with a female antagonist demands a bit of suspension of disbelief because of the physical brutality that the cases demand, but there is no lack of commitment from Tillotama Shome. The scene where she cranes her neck out of a car in Delhi’s toxic air, to gaze at the moon after a narrow escape, remains etched in the mind long after the series is over. Director Tanuj Chopra is not aiming for a lecture on crime and its causes, but the form consistently gives a feeling that the crime procedural has the heartbeat of a nuanced documentary. the series has a number of characters that make you chuckle and disturb you at the same time. Do people living on the margins of society have a right to snatch the ill-gotten money of the corrupt among the elite to fulfil their aspirations?

In the first episode, we watch a horrific home invasion in a wealthy Delhi subdivision in which the perpetrators are masked and implacable as they pass under CCTV cameras. As with the first season, the draw here is moody, anxious realism: Creator Richie Mehta and director Tanuj Chopra depict Delhi as a packed, edgy metropolis teetering on the brink of disorder. I especially love the small grace notes, keenly observed, like the fact that suspects are detained and held by hand in Delhi—not much use of handcuffs apparently—which leads to suspects escaping custody. The streamer was growing at a heady rate and the offerings were feeling scattershot—but the selection of international crime dramas remained solid as ever, and Delhi Crime’s seven-episode season was proof. I was dazzled by this gritty, well-observed procedural, which dramatized the aftermath of a notorious 2012 gang rape in New Delhi and introduced us to Deputy Commissioner Vartika Chaturvedi, a police heroine out of the Helen Mirren-as-Jane Tennison mold. Mehta and Chopra, who based this new season on writings by a former Delhi police commissioner, seem intent on even-handedly probing the strains of explosive growth, of a megacity bursting at its own seams.

DELHI CRIME season 2 recently landed on Netflix with the team taking on a new case - but is the International Emmy-winning series based on a true story? Delhi Crime season 2: Is it based on a true story?
The series loses out on the fact that the crimes this season, though ghastly, don't feel as personal or compelling as what transpired in the first season.
Season One was built around a crime that was etched in black and white. However, even as it touches upon the backstories of Vartika and her team — some more, some less — the series surprisingly doesn’t deep-dive into the antecedents of the perpetrator and what makes her trade humaneness for such unambiguous heinousness. In Season 2, many questions centre around why a criminal becomes one are raised, even though some of them are not answered satisfactorily. A string of heinous murders, all carried out in the same style, bring Vartika to tipping point even as pressure mounts on her, by dint of the victims belonging to the privileged echelons of society, to pin the blame on a lesser-privileged scapegoat. A constant feeling of dread and foreboding — accentuated by the show’s trademark dark-grey palette — pervades the initial minutes of the first episode before Vartika (Shefali now wears the character, and her uniform, like second skin) is summoned to the scene of a ghastly crime — multiple murders, with the victims brutally bludgeoned, in a gated community in a posh locality of the capital. The ever-widening chasm between the privileged and the underprivileged forms an integral part of this season, but one which is ultimately examined a little too superficially.
Season 2 of Delhi Crime starts with DCP Vartika Jha who reveals that 3rd of Delhi's population lives in the slums and serves the elite, making it difficult ...
She gets a call from CP Vijay who lets her know that the Home Minister of India is concerned about the issue too. Vartika however is not sure if it is the same group and expresses her concern with her husband. Vartika briefs her team about the Kaccha-Baniyan gang and their past criminal activities. Neeti talks to her husband Devender about the crime and they chat up about their upcoming holiday. Neeti is late and as she arrives, Vartika assigns her to take care of the victim’s daughter and grandson. The entire murder was recorded and Bhupendra alleges that the murder is committed by the ‘Kaccha-Baniyan’ gang. Vartika tells the victim’s daughter that she can take her parents’ bodies to the morgue with a promise that they will find the murderers soon. Vartika warns the team against leaking information out of their circle and asks them to get to work. The victim’s daughter arrives at the scene of the crime and asks about the commotion. Vartika talks to the daughter of the victim’s daughter and informs her about the murder. Season 2 of Delhi Crime starts with DCP Vartika Jha who reveals that 3rd of Delhi’s population lives in the slums and serves the elite, making it difficult to maintain law and order in the city. Officer Neeti Singh is now married and she too receives an alert about the crime.
"Delhi Crime" Season 2 is directed by Tanuj Chopra and created by Richie Mehta. The series once again banks upon the dependable Shefali Shah, who finds.
Commissioner Kumar called Vartika and told her that though she had been promoted to the post of DIG, she was being transferred to a remote area. On the one hand, we see the rich getting richer, and on the other, we see these people living in slums, devoid of any hope that one day they will make it to the top. The police got to know that Jugnu and Azad were present near the house of the first victims, a couple of days before they were killed. She told the press that Jugnu and Azad didn’t have anything to do with the gang. He was supposed to meet the other three when he was caught by the police. They had gone to the area to conduct a robbery, but they were not targeting the house of the victims who were killed by the “Kaccha Baniyan” gang. Everybody thought that in the press conference, she would name Jugnu and Azad as the members of the Kachha Baniyan Gang, but that didn’t happen. The commissioner of police, Kumar Vijay, wanted Vartika to create a narrative that aided the general sentiment, where they would make Jugnu and Azad the accused in the case. He tells Vartika and the others that the denotified tribes were called the criminal tribes in the British era. The police were called incompetent and blamed for not being able to ensure the safety of the people. The killers had the audacity to call the control room and openly challenge them. A balance that favored the privileged and didn’t mind trampling the downtrodden.

The second season of Delhi Crime fails to connect the dots between personal and political, reducing the series into a templated police and criminal chase.

The very existence of DCP Vartika Chaturvedi and her team ( The psyche of the perpetrators or even their relationship with crime are threads that remain woefully neglected in this season. The show takes sufficient effort to underline the culpability of police forces in continuing the language of colonial violence inflicted against these tribes even today. In fact, that’s as much as Delhi Crime goes in demanding to hold Delhi Police accountable for its excesses. By which, I am referring to an instance where a season with a complete arc is continued into another season once it becomes popular — undermining in the process the efficiency of the premise in the first place. That the members of the group were made up of people from the denotified tribes — classified as “born criminals” in colonial India — makes the Delhi Police’s investigation all the more hostile. Based on “Moon Gazer,” a chapter in former Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar’s book Khaki Files: Inside Stories of Police Investigations, the season pits DCP Vartika Chaturvedi ( In Kumar’s account, these heinous killings were carried out by members of the scheduled tribe in the 1990s and their victims included young women. Created and directed by Richie Mehta, the seven-episode series recreated the 2012 Delhi gangrape investigation with the Delhi Police as the hero and victim but never the villain.
