This is the most viscerally enjoyable Dragon Ball movie since 2013's Battle of the Gods. Piccolo, the former demon God, steals the show with his curmudgeonly ...
For my money, this is the most viscerally enjoyable Dragon Ball movie since 2013's Battle of the Gods. Again and again, we see the next generation repeating the mistakes made by their parents — and occasionally, learning from them. But of course, underneath these action movie shenanigans, Super Hero is a story about parents and children, about the sins of the father and so on. This is peak Dragon Ball: in-your-face, nerdy and never scrimping on the comicbook-style sound effects. This tells you a lot about the rapidly-shifting tonality and all-round wackiness of the Dragon Ball stories in general and Super Hero in particular. Meanwhile, Piccolo is training Gohan's adorable, prodigal daughter Pan while also ticking off her father for not training harder (a well-timed kick in the nuts is also delivered, just to rub it in). Hedo is similarly enamoured by the thought of accomplishing something that his grandfather Gero could not. Gohan's daughter Pan wants to see her Dad fight and wonders, fan-girl style, who would prevail if her father Gohan and grandfather Goku ever faced off in combat. Super Hero is a lot of fun once it truly hits its stride, about 20-30 minutes into the film. The film's Big Bad, a man called Magenta (Charles Martinet in the English dub) is dressed, appropriately enough, in a magenta-coloured suit and he is trying to lure a prodigal young 'mad scientist', the superhero-fixated Dr Hedo. Hedo's grandfather Dr Gero is someone fans of the franchise are familiar with — he's the one who created the deadly 'Cell', an artificial life form (created by harvesting cells from several characters in the franchise) teeming with evil, an entity that's constantly upgrading and regenerating itself by travelling back and forth in time. The story follows Hedo and Magenta's efforts to create 'Cell Max' a souped-up version of Cell that will be all the more deadly, close to invulnerable.

'Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero', the 21st film in the franchise, may not strictly seem like a big screen experience but it is ambitious and impressive in technical terms even if does not deliver much on the entertainment side. So for newcomers to the franchise, even with existing multiple reboots, the series may seem impenetrable. This indiscriminate attempt to create another fun ride replicating outrageous battles of coloured characters and their world of bad guys doesn’t quite hit the nail on that head.

[resurrects a familiar face](https://www.cbr.com/dragon-ball-z-cell-best-villain/). Broly doesn’t get to do much fighting in the film, but he’s still treated like a loose cannon of cataclysmic proportions. This is a rarity in the franchise and could have some rewarding repercussions for whatever comes next in Dragon Ball’s anime. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero has received so much attention because it intentionally subverts this formula and pushes Goku and Vegeta to the sidelines in favor of more neglected heroes like Gohan and Piccolo. Piccolo has struggled to compete with the superior strength of Saiyans, but he suddenly rises back to relevancy through some unbelievable upgrades. Goku’s main contribution to the film is a strenuous sparring session with Vegeta that’s meant to entertain Beerus and Whis. Android 18 is responsible for significant eliminations during the Tournament of Power and she makes an appreciated appearance in Super Hero even if her role isn’t significant. The final fight against Cell Max requires all hands on deck and Android 18 is one of several supporting players who jumps into battle.

The inclusion of Gohan and Piccolo too, like I said before, is a breath of fresh air. Overall, the movie was enjoyable and fans of the franchise should not miss it. Gohan and Piccolo were the center of attraction of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Butt afficionados have a precious gift by Gotenks for them in the movie. However, Cell Max displayed no characteristics of the original Cell we saw in Dragon Ball Z and was just a mindless machine hellbent on causing destruction. His relationship with Pan is also a highlight in the movie. There were a number of battles scattered or more like crammed into the movie, and all of them failed to leave an impact. But in the end, negatives aside, the plot progresses without any hiccups and is enjoyable in its majority. The scene where Piccolo was training Pan, though striking in its color balance, lighting and shadows, felt more like an improved version of Motu-Patlu (the grass? However, Super Hero’s complete overhaul made the CG animation more visible, and the fan’s verdict on it should be out soon! Gohan’s very first transformation in the movie, Cell Max’s energy burst as he spawned and some other similar scenes felt kind of spotty too. Almost 30 years after Dragon Ball Z's Cell Saga, Dragon Ball finally sidelined Goku and let Gohan shine in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
It will be interesting to see if there will be another Dragon Ball movie after Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero that keeps Goku as a supporting character only. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is not only a great callback to Gohan’s best Dragon Ball Z story but also a reminder that Dragon Ball does not always need Goku to work. [Goku’s popularity throughout the Dragon Ball sagas](https://screenrant.com/dragon-ball-goku-age-how-old-sagas/). Gohan’s time as the main character didn't last long back then, which is why it is so positive that [Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero's ending battle](https://screenrant.com/dragon-ball-super-hero-movie-ending-explained/) does not involve Goku. 29 years after Dragon Ball Z’s Cell Saga, Gohan is back in the spotlight in Super Hero, Dragon Ball Super’s new movie that takes place four months after the events of Dragon Ball Super: Broly and around one year before Dragon Ball Z's Peaceful World Saga. The Red Ribbon Army’s ultimate plan was to unleash a new Cell android, Cell Max, setting up a new iteration of one of Dragon Ball Z’s best moments – Gohan vs.

Re-introducing Broly in official canon was a first step; Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero updating Gohan and Piccolo was another big one; while Dragon Ball Super's manga has expanded Goku's father Bardock's history, the origin of the Namekians and their Dragon Balls, the entire nature of Saiyan power. With Dragon Ball Super's manga currently working on a new arc, perhaps we'll see the fusion of Goten and Trunks arrive in the Shonen series. [Unfortunately, fans of Dragon Ball Super were never able to see what a teenage version of Gotenks looks like](https://comicbook.com/anime/news/dragon-ball-super-super-hero-gotenks-anime-movie-trailer/), with the last shot of Goten and Trunks hinting that they were able to successfully perform the dance but not showing the result. Luckily for the pair of Z-Fighters, they received some serious back-up, with fans taking note that a teenage Goten and Trunks would be appearing in the new Shonen movie.
While Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero's Gammas are formidable, they may not be the superior androids that Dr. Hedo seemed to insist they were.
So while Androids 17 and 18 might not be able to square up to the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Gammas in a fight, they could almost certainly outlast them. While it's possible - even likely - that the Gammas have a higher overall power output, Android 17 and 18 simply cannot run out of energy. Hedo seems extremely confident that Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 are the ultimate Androids in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, their weakness regarding the limit on their power supply is something that 17 and 18 simply don't have to worry about. During this infiltration, he winds up in a battle with the likes of Gamma 1. Despite the Gammas putting on a good show, Androids 17 and 18 have already proven that they just wouldn't have the same kinds of problems that their supposed successors do. However, one detail revealed halfway through the film reveals that they may not be as superior to their predecessors, [Android 17 and 18](https://screenrant.com/dragon-ball-android-17-18-power-comparison-weak-reason/), as the good doctor let on.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero introduces new Androids courtesy of the Red Ribbon Army. Given the film's canonicity, will they show up in the anime?
[canon to the anime TV series](https://www.cbr.com/dragon-ball-super-super-hero-movie-canon/), which wasn't the case for the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z movies. The same might be said for [the Dragon Ball Super manga](https://www.cbr.com/dragon-ball-super-super-hero-toyotarou-loves/), though the jury is still out on that. [Dragon Ball Super](https://www.cbr.com/tag/dragon-ball-super/) has returned to theaters with the release of a new movie titled Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Making it out of the explosion with the heroes, Gamma 1 and Hedo repent of their misguided deeds under the influence of the now-destroyed Red Ribbon Army. This definitely makes a return almost inevitable, and with the movie's place in the series' continuity, it could definitely happen for the new Androids in Dragon Ball Super. [the humongous Cell Max](https://www.cbr.com/dragon-ball-super-hero-cell-max-godzilla-movie/) is an even bigger threat than the original.

But, the way it starts & is carried forward even in important signature scenes is 2/5 at best. Barring the psychedelic climax & few portions of Gohan powering up, the high moments in the film are too less to even mention. The OG Akira Toriyama just cannot stop imagining the crazy situations his beloved characters can be in & this is exactly one of them. How the plan & battle shapes up is where the vital moments of the story lie. Picollo plans to stop this with the help of Goku’s son Gohan & his 3-year-old cutie Pan. The new transformation hasn't made its way into the manga as of yet, though with the Granolah The Survivor Arc coming to a close, it is a possibility that we might see Gohan sporting this new form in the next storyline. [Gohan Beast's transformation was quite close to that of the Z-Fighter's first time becoming Super Saiyan 2](https://comicbook.com/anime/news/dragon-ball-super-hero-is-gohan-beast-canon-anime-manga-explained/) for the first time, reflecting the parallels between the original Cell and the new version of the biological nightmare that was spawned thanks to Dr. The latest film in Dragon Ball's history had Gohan and Piccolo take over from Goku and Piccolo during this new adventure, with each of the Z-Fighters getting some new power-ups in the fight against the Red Ribbon Army.
Dragon Ball Super- Superhero review: Wholesome to the core and packed with nostalgia, it's a treat for any young or old fan of the franchise.
And the first, I hope, of more to come. From checking in with Dende (Guardian of the Earth) to stocking up on Senzu beans to, of course, summoning Shenron to make wishes three, we get a heartfelt whistle-stop-tour return to this universe and its beloved inhabitants. Instead, what Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero does well is to offer a self-aware homage to this world and its legacy. To answer the earlier question of how director Tetsuro Kodama attempts to make this a justifiable big screen watch - for one, the animation style is more three-dimensional than the original series, giving the characters more depth (visually speaking). Well, there’s not much to be said for the last two considering a new villain cropping up that literally has the power to destroy the entire planet is essentially just a Tuesday for these folks. The Red Ribbon Army is back (one of the foes young Goku defeated in Dragon Ball who then returned years later as the employers of Dr Gero - the evil genius who created the androids and Cell).
