I Came By movie review & film summary (2022) | Roger Ebert (Roger Ebert)

There are some fun performances and clever themes in I Came By, two things that elevate it above a lot of the product coming out of the Netflix Thriller ...

“I Came By” is undeniably well-composed and entertaining enough for its missteps to be overlooked most of the time. “I Came By” shifts protagonists here to Toby’s mother (Kelly Macdonald), who grows increasingly concerned that her 23-year-old son has disappeared off the face of the earth. There’s an element of “I Came By” that isn’t so much about what happens behind closed doors as it is about how often powerful people can get away with murder in plain sight. This leads him to the home of a former judge named Hector Blake ( With his buddy Jay ( [Percelle Ascott](/cast-and-crew/percelle-ascott)), Toby breaks into expensive homes and tags a wall with the phrase “I Came By.” Why? [Babak Anvari](/cast-and-crew/babak-anvari)’s “I Came By,” a mostly effective potboiler that has the opposite problem of so many mini-series on the streaming service in that it has a TV season worth of ideas crammed into its runtime.

Would you like to see a sequel to I Came By? A sequel could see Jay on the run with Naz trying to escape from Detective Ella, who wants to bring him in for questioning. At the time of writing, there is no news of a sequel to I Came By. Not only that, but the cast would need to find time in their busy schedules to take on this project too. Hugh Bonneville’s character is a massive part of this universe though and he has a pretty packed scheduled, with the prolific actor at various stages for 4 separate movie projects. However, should Netflix decide to renew this one, it’s fair to say story, production and filming would all need to be commenced and booked in before we even look at a specific time for a sequel.

I Came By ending explained: Do Toby, Jay, and Lizzie survive in the ... (Sportskeeda)

I Came By is a thriller directed by Babak Anvari that was released on Netflix on Wednesday, August 31.

When Detective Sergeant Lloyd arrives at the scene, she finds Blake beaten up and tied in cello tape with the words "I Came By" written on the wall. A fight ensues between the two, and eventually Jay incapacitates the old man. Jay arrives at the spot and follows Blake home. He thus concludes that Lizzie is dead as well, and blames himself for refusing to help her. Aware of Omar's situation, Blake threatens to cancel his application. Blake then revealed to Omar that his anti-immigrant stance emerged from an infidel relationship between his father and their Indian servant Ravi, whom he later went on to kill. Despite such a serious situation, Omar was reluctant to file a police complaint because of concerns around his application to seek permanent citizenship in the UK. While trying to help the man, Toby ends up getting killed and incinerated by Blake. The man turns out to be Omar, an Iranian asylum seeker, who had gone to Blake's place upon the latter's invitation. The film begins with two best friends, Toby and Jay, breaking into a rich person's house and painting graffiti that reads: I Came By. Here, he stumbles across a concealed door and discovers an injured and imprisoned man, who seems to have been held captive by Blake. There, even though Lloyd is able to find the room where Toby had found the prisoner, it turns out to be empty with no blood stains.

I Came By: Netflix Horror's Ending Offers a Glimmer of Hope (Den of Geek)

Netflix's social thriller I Came By carries a bleak message, but the ending gives us hope, and that's important.

His last victim is alive, the evidence is overwhelming and Blake will finally go down. Our protagonist is killed in the first half of the movie (we don’t know this for sure until a bit later), his body is cremated and flushed down the toilet. With his basement shenanigans compromised, Blake has packed up and moved house, leaving no obvious evidence pointing to what happened to Liz. His mother can’t get justice despite mounting evidence that Blake is the one who has (or at least knows the whereabouts of) her son. His commitment has to be to his family. As with her son, when Liz attempts to help, Blake kills both her and Omid. It’s not clear if he’s had victims before the man that Toby finds, but it would appear that Blake’s MO is to capture and keep a prisoner to torture (and god knows what else, but there are very clear sexual undertones here – Bonneville playing against type is leeringly creepy, softly spoken and proper in a way that makes your skin crawl). Blake’s colonialist father (Toby references this earlier in the movie) hired a young Parsi man called Ravi as a ‘helper’ who he eventually took under his wing and then into his bed, usurping his wife and son, who he abandoned, eventually leading to his mother’s suicide – Blake was the first to find his dead mum. Omid wont go to the police because of his fear of how that will affect his application. When Toby breaks into Blake’s house he sees the guy beaten and half naked, and returns with the hope of rescuing him. He is the public face of fairness and equality for all. Possibly because of his memories of Ravi and his terrible racist father.

So, his poorly built plan to expose the sins of St. Blake leads him to die in the end. He leaves a letter from Blake’s letter box in Toby’s cupboard so that Lizzie can report Hector to the police. Naz informs him about Hector’s presence at his former school’s Tercentenary event, which leads Jay to follow him from there. Finally, Jay breaks into a sleeping Hector’s room in the middle of the night, and while a big commotion starts between them, Jay defeats him in a fight, handing him over to the police. I Came By Review: A Murky Thriller That Diverges Too Much (MovieWeb)

Starring George MacKay and Hugh Bonneville, I Came By plots out a class struggle with sinister undertones.

Would they still believe the individual who came to light with these accusations—even if they were considered to be a criminal who broke into people’s homes for information, his art, and held beliefs against the mainstream norm? One of the key highlights of I Came By is its performances, specifically by Hugh Bonneville. I Came By’s biggest problem is that while it offers critical commentary about the world as we know it today, it fails to go beyond a superficial level. Would one be able to believe the extent of their crimes if they were exposed to the world? This question is a classic riff on the theme that everything is not as it seems, and Anvari takes it down a twisting route. Juxtaposed against Toby, a scrawny young man with a penchant for actively breaking the law, there is quite a bit of underlying commentary about the state of society and law enforcement. I Came By morphs into something completely different than what it started as, adding commentary about how the rich and powerful can get away with anything they desire—as long as they have the right connections. Now filled with a sense of duty towards his unborn child, he wants to call it quits with the graffiti operation in hopes that one day, he will be able to raise his child instead of potentially ending up in jail if he continues with Toby. I Came By borrows elements from his previous work, weaving together a piece that not only is psychological but a product of the world the characters live inside of and the circumstances that led them down a certain path. He had a successful career in law that advocated for those often underrepresented in the legal arena, and it is this detail that originally sets him up as a likable character in the short term. As Toby breaks into Blake’s home and discovers a secret buried within the depths of the basement, he decides on a new mission: he is going to get to the bottom of who and what Blake is, even if he now has to do it alone. Of course, he does not do it alone—his accomplice in crime is a childhood best friend, Jay (Ascott).

I Came By review – a wicked turn by Bonneville (Ready Steady Cut)

Talk about changing up a dramatic and family-friendly filmography. I Came By, a new horror thriller by director Babak Anvari, allows Hugh Bonneville to be seen ...

However, I enjoyed the “transitions” of how the story evolves. I Came By is a giant metaphor for how greed can treat,”…your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” While not getting into spoilers, the story may be a bit formulaic. Written by Anvari and co-writer Namsi Khan (Humans), it follows Toby (1917‘s George McKay) and Jay (Percelle Ascott), who make political statements by spraying graffiti on the walls of the wealthy elite with the phrase, I Came By. Anvari and Khan’s script is not your typical game of cat and mouse. The judge then puts them in the panic room, torturing them with a homemade paddle, and I can only assume he says off camera, “Case dismissed,” every time he takes a swing. I Came By, a new horror thriller by director Babak Anvari, allows Hugh Bonneville to be seen in a new light.
