The commissioning of India's first indigenously designed and manufactured aircraft carrier will mark a defining moment in the history of the Indian Navy.
In spite of the protective cover of these ships and its own defence systems, aircraft carriers remain a vulnerable target. However, senior officials said that the decision to give a nod to construct IAC-II not just has political, economic and strategic considerations, but also one of India’s projected standing as a global maritime power. The idea is for India to have two carriers at any given point in time, if a third is in the refit. Vikrant uses the Short Take Off but Arrested Recovery (STOBAR) model with a ski-jump for launching aircraft, and a set of three arrester wires for their recovery onboard. The ship was delivered to the Navy on July 28. Over the last few years, top commanders have been insisting for a third carrier apart from Russian-origin Kiev-class INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant. Fourth and final phase of sea trials for the IAC was completed on July 10 after conducting integrated testing of the majority of the equipment and systems onboard, including some of the Aviation Facilities Complex equipment. The IAC was launched on August 12 in 2013 and by that time, 80% of its structure had been fabricated and all the major machinery including turbines, alternators and gearboxes were installed. Also, with a displacement of 43,000 tonnes when fully loaded, INS Vikrant is set to be the seventh largest among the carriers or carrier classes in the world. The keel of the IAC-I was laid on February 28, 2009. Like many other ships at the time, the under-construction HMS Hercules was put up for sale by the United Kingdom, and was purchased by India in 1957. The first ever aircraft carrier to be indigenously designed and constructed, INS Vikrant will strengthen the country’s standing as a ‘Blue Water Navy’ — a maritime force with global reach and capability to operate over deep seas.
INS Vikrant commission news: PM dedicated the aircraft carrier to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and went onto exalt women power in the Indian Navy.
RECOMMENDED India is moving towards self-reliance and has shown that it’s moving fastly towards becoming a major global power. Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alapov said India is inching towards self-reliance and moving fast towards becoming a global power. The aircraft carrier is constructed using specialty steel provided by Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). The company also supplied 30,000 tonnes of DMR plates. It also has special cabins for women officers. The aircraft carrier is designed for a crew of around 1,700 people and houses 2,300 compartments. He also exalted women power in the Indian Navy and noted, "When INS Vikrant descends to protect our maritime zone, many women soldiers of the Navy will also be stationed there. But from today onwards, inspired by Chhatrapati Shivaji, the new Navy flag will fly in the sea and in the sky." Alapov said, “It’s a proud moment for India as they built an indigenous major aircraft carrier.
