Don't get me wrong — I'm pleased that the Ultra is getting a longer battery life than other Apple Watches. But what caught my attention was its rated battery life of 36 hours — double that of every Apple Watch to date, and much longer than most of the [best smartwatches](https://www.tomsguide.com/us/best-smartwatches,review-2156.html). So, that figure does not necessarily include active GPS use, which I've found to chew up battery life faster than a puppy with your favorite shoe. In all my years of testing smartwatches and fitness trackers, one of the features I value the most is battery life. [Samsung Galaxy Watch 5](https://www.tomsguide.com/reviews/samsung-galaxy-watch-5) has the ability to charge up to 50 percent in half an hour, but a watch's endurance should be measured in days, rather than hours.

Apple announced the upgrade to the Series 7 smartwatch in the Watch Series 8, which sits below the Watch Ultra. Here are our first impressions.

From what we've seen so far though, the Watch Series 8 a solid upgrade for those with a Series 6 or older, and a great starting place for those new to the Apple Watch world who have decided the Watch SE isn't enough. The Digital Crown with an electrical heart rate sensor is positioned at the top of the right edge with a button beneath, while a speaker sits on the left edge.
