Explained: NASA's Moon Mission Artemis I, Why Was The Launch ... (India Times)

On Saturday, NASA aborted its latest effort to launch the ground-breaking Artemis 1 moon rocket since it failed to stop a fuel leak detected during tanking.

On Artemis III, NASA anticipates sending the first woman and person of colour to the Moon after 2024. The goddess of the woods and hunting, Artemis, was virginal. Even while the Greek Artemis was brave and strong, she wasn't always sympathetic or considerate of others, especially women. Additionally, the Artemis I mission will transport two mannequins that will be used to research how radiation affects women's bodies so that NASA can improve the protection of female astronauts. The initial cost of each Artemis mission is expected to be over 4 billion dollars. The crew of Artemis 2 will travel to lunar orbit as soon as two years. Artemis 1, the first of several missions is intended to successfully land astronauts on the moon. The Space Launch System (SLS), termed NASA's "mega Moon rocket," will make its debut with the Artemis 1 mission and, if successful, would become the most powerful rocket ever. "This is a mission that truly will do what hasn't been done and learn what isn't known," Mike Sarafin, Artemis 1 mission manager at NASA Headquarters in Washington, said in the news release. The Orion spacecraft, designed to transport astronauts on trips into orbit lasting up to a few weeks, is perched atop this rocket. NASA intends to launch its brand-new Space Launch System (SLS), with the Orion spacecraft that is designed to host astronauts sitting atop the rocket. On Saturday, NASA aborted its latest effort to launch the ground-breaking Artemis 1 moon rocket since it failed to stop a fuel leak detected during tanking.

Moreover, Europa Clipper measures 10 feet tall and five feet wide and once equipped with solar panels, it will stretch to the length of a basketball court. Equipped with a suite of nine instruments, the spacecraft will use its JunoCam to gather high-resolution on Europa's nightside where the scattered light from Jupiter’s cloud tops is the only source of illumination. NASA is targeting the launch of Europa Clipper in October 2024 to examine Europa's oceans where scientists believe conditions are suitable for life. Just like Juno, this spacecraft too will be equipped with a suite of nine science instruments. NASA is excited about its Juno spacecraft as it is set to fly by Europa, Jupiter’s moon, on September 29, offering the closest views of the icy world in over 22 years. Bolton explained that Juno's flyby will be much better than the one conducted by Galileo as the latter was unable to gather much data on the Jovian Moon's nightside.

NASA DART update: CubeSat sent to record spacecraft's collision ... (Republic World)

NASA's DART spacecraft, which was launched last November, is set to collide with an asteroid, an event which will be documented by a CubeSat on Sept 27.

“The detachment was nominal, the DART probe has resumed its pre-release attitude to continue its cruise that will take it to the moment of the expected impact on the night between 26 and 27 September”, the space agency said in an update. LICIACube is built to last six months and would be used to document the events before the European Space Agency (ESA) launches its Hera mission. Short for Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), the spacecraft was launched by NASA on November 24 last year and will slam into its target space rock Dimorphos at a speed of 24,140 kmh at an estimated time of 4:44 am IST on September 27 (7:14 EDT on Sept 26).

So this is I think (I hope) the first of many more experiments,” Boslough remarks. “What we would be able to do is measure the amount of momentum transferred from the projectile that’s hitting this moon and it will change its trajectory. Then, once it is 24 hours away from impact, the navigation team will estimate the position of the moonlet within 2 km — from there, DART will be on its own to autonomously guide itself to its collision with the asteroid moonlet. When it does, we’ll know a bit more about how to deflect an asteroid — but it’s just the first step. While the asteroid poses no threat to Earth, this is the world’s first test of the kinetic impact technique, using a spacecraft to deflect an asteroid for planetary defense. “This first set of images is being used as a test to prove our imaging techniques,” said Elena Adams, the DART mission systems engineer at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland.
