Thank you Roger Federer, for a tennis experience to last a lifetime (Scroll.in)

The matches and titles he won can be counted but Federer gave us countless moments on court that made us feel something special inside.

In the days and weeks and months and years to come, tributes will flow for Federer. But there were also occasions in recent times, where he battled hard and found ways to win, for the want of a better word, ugly. So many of us could say the same to him. The matches and titles he won can be counted but Federer gave us countless moments on court that made us feel something inside. But perhaps it is romantic that he got to make another appearance at this court after bowing out with a bagel. For those of us who see sport as an emotional experience, as a window into feeling joy and sorrow through what happens on the field of play, it is nice to know he got this afternoon of celebration at SW 19. “Feels awkward to be here today in a different type of role, but it’s great to be here with, like Novak said, with all the other champions. “I will play more tennis in the future, of course, but just not in Grand Slams or on the tour,” he added. During the parade of the champions at SW19 this year to celebrate 100 years of Centre Court, Federer emerged through the redesigned doorway. Even while announcing his retirement, Federer wanted to let the millions of tennis fans around the world know he will be present. So, he walked on to the court, like never before. One of my highlights of course, in 2001 and walking out here with Pete Sampras, who I would like to give a big shout out to. The Laver Cup in London is set to be his final event on tour.

Roger Federer retires: For tennis lovers, the pedestal he sits on is ... (The Indian Express)

Even when in the most hopeless of situations, Federer's mind would be in search of that window of opportunity that could see him get back in the game.

An ace to avoid a break, an ace at Championship point — that was part of the famous Federer act of ages. If greatness was measured by the number of Grand Slams, Federer is not a GOAT. In days to come, if tribute-givers want to install life-size statues of him outside stadiums, it would invariably be that pose of him with his racket pointing to the sky, ready to unleash his favourite shot. Any freeze frame of his backhand had the potential to be muse for a painter. It was a simple routine but, in the heat of a match situation, was tough to follow. After 24 years of playing beautiful tennis and winning 20 Grand Slams, the oldest of the Big 3 was taking the curtain call.

Roger Federer redefined the game, heralded greatest era in men's ... (Firstpost)

For many, Federer's sheer aesthetics stand out over and above his collection of 20 majors, 103 singles titles and 310 weeks at World No 1.

He would land on the ball of his feet with a wide split-step and be ready to move to any direction. Two years later, Federer ran through the men’s field to win his maiden Wimbledon and Grand Slam title to usher the sport into a new era. Federer was scheduled to make a return to Basel at his home tournament. He was asked: “Can you think of anybody beating the record?” Unknown to him, and the rest of the world, was a youngster who lost in the Wimbledon opening round to Yevgeny Kafelnikov. It played a crucial role in every kind of magic that Federer created on the court. In 2000, Sampras had lifted the Wimbledon title and taken his Grand Slam tally to a jaw-dropping 13. He would elegantly power through the ball, always making sure to follow through and extending his right arm fully while completing the groundstroke. The single-handed backhand, not new to the sport, became a shot that was associated with eight-time Wimbledon winner. Four-time defending Wimbledon champion Sampras serves on the deuce court to the Swiss who has a ponytail on, dons a white bandana and a black-and-white necklace. The 41-year-old spearheaded a generation of men’s tennis that dominated, and still does, the sport for two decades. But over the last couple of years, injuries started to play a role in keeping the Swiss out of action. Considered one of the most polished and suave athletes across sports, he played a crucial role in redefining and evolving tennis.

Edberg coached Federer for two years from 2014, just after Federer's worst year with back troubles, and transformed his game into a more attacking version.

Edberg was raved everywhere in his final year, the farewell celebrations kept on coming and he failed to win a title. Federer had begun to play around with the new toy in the sessions to come and suddenly produced a winner. It’s just very tough to handle but at the same time, it was a memorable year. Edberg smiles, as he hears Federer share his gratitude to Wilson Tennis chat, and says ‘Thanks! It was really exciting to bring something new into the game. “The confidence to switch rackets was very important that time.” And to take the ball early. During the first training session, Severin called out to Roger “why don’t you take the serve early?” ‘How early do you want me to take it? Watch the video above to see the ballsiness of it. Stefan was the first one to tell me – when somebody Stefan says its’ a good switch, it’s a big thing,” Federer told Wilson Tennis. He had tinkered with the new model that would come to be called RF 97, with a bigger head size, in early ’13 but got cold feet. “Roger had back problems, somehow lost his way and was completely out of his shoes.

The remarkable career of Roger Federer: a short history of all-time ... (The Indian Express)

Roger Federer is an icon in sports. The best there is, possibly the best there was and, some might say, the best there ever will be.

He won Wimbledon in 2003 and then the Australian Open in 2018, at the age of 36. And the Swiss maestro’s 22 defeats, 12 of them in tournament finals, is also the most he has lost to any player during this decade. That man would surely be Federer given he is the only player to win at least 10 titles on three different surfaces. Although he has been considered among the most complete of players, his relationship with clay has not been easy. He quickly joined the junior tennis circuit in July 1996. 1 in 2004 and remained in that position until 2008 — a period that he dominated like never seen before in the Open Era. Through his long reign, Federer had to discover new ways to address opponents, some of whom like Nadal and Djokovic, relied more on the physical aspects of the game that Federer often struggled with. He has been voted by his peers to receive the Sportsmanship Award a record 13 times, and has won the ATP Fan’s Favourite 17 years consecutively. He was the first person to win 20 grand slam titles and has held the world number 1 spot in ATP rankings for more time than any other player barring Novak Djokovic. He has been named the ATP Player of the Year and ITF World Champion five times, and has won the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award a record five times, including four consecutive awards from 2005 to 2008. He was also technically brilliant, making impossible shots look like a stroll in the park. While Federer says his body has had enough, legions of his fans around the world are overcome by an irrational desire to see him continue to compete indefinitely.

He came to play Australian Open next year and faced his biggest rival in Rafael Nadal in the final. In a way he did by winning the title. He has done so much that it is difficult to keep up with the numbers. It is difficult to find a flaw in the Swiss legend, both on and off the court. When he was at his peak, it was difficult to outdo him. He missed the Olympics, and the US Open and took almost 6 months to regain fitness. Like how writer Ruskin Bond put in one of his stories, it is not the time that is passing by, it is you and I. He competed hard but more importantly, irrespective of a win or loss, he kept his dignity.
