Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu ReviewAshwin RamIntroduction: Vendhu Thanindhadhu Kaadu is a Silambarasan TR starrer gangster drama flick. It is written by.
Great work in terms of background score, just the fact that ‘Marakkuma Nenjam’ is used in multiple places, there are a variety of impressive tunes that improves the scenes well. However, the minimum expectation for a moviegoer is for the film to hold the attention span, in that way, it’s for sure a winner. Radhika Sarathkumar just has a minimal screen-time and her character is kind of empty with lack of emotional quotient. The screenplay is decent for almost the entire movie. Carries a very simple and a familiar storyline which is the rise of a common man. It is written by Jeyamohan and directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon.

Director Gautham Vasudev Menon's Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu starring Simbu and Siddhi Idnani is a solid gangster origin story. However, the film has some ...
In the climax, the two meet again and it’s a profound moment. Siddhi Idnani made a confident debut and looks perfect for the role of a Mumbai girl. His transformation scene and the restraint in his performance made the film engaging. That’s a stretch that could have elevated the film to a different level. While the first half of VTK establishes the story, the second half was a letdown. While watching the film, there’s a constant thought that runs in your mind whether VTK is a Gautham Menon film or a Jeyamohan film.
Here is what the audiences have to say about Silambarasan TR's Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu, which released today in theatres.
The film was set to release in Telugu as well today but got postponed. Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu movie review: Gautham Menon's gangster film starring Simbu is realistic and entertaining.
As much as the film follows a predictable story arc, it’s the drama and the build-up to the transformation of Simbu’s character that really keeps one invested in the story. This is unarguably Gautham’s best work in recent times and apart from his realistic treatment, it's the action sequences that really stand out in the film. The film allows Simbu to shed his star image and be seen as a young boy drawn into the underworld. As Muthu slowly starts getting acquainted with his co-workers and gets accustomed to the world he currently lives in, he learns of the direct ties of his co-workers and boss with the local underworld. Most popular for his breezy romantic stories and the successful cop universe of films, Gautham treads a path less travelled to narrate a story about the rise of a gangster but this is a story that’s devoid of any heroism. What’s really refreshing about Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu is that it allows both Gautham and Silambarasan to step out of their comfort zones and the result is rewarding.

Even if one is ready to overlook such tonal inconsistencies, the end of Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu is appallingly disjointed. To be precise, it’s the ‘GVM-Simbu’ zone, which is incongruous with the realistic and grounded tone of the rest of the film. Unfortunately, all the great things about Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu lose their charm as the film inches toward the end. When Muthu decides to embark on his journey to Mumbai, his mom says, “Thikathavangalukku saami thunai irukum (to the directionless person, God will be of support). Simbu is as invisible as Gautham Menon in 'Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu' and this is a welcome departure for them. Yet, something feels incomplete.
Not exactly that but we at least get to hear the woman say, “This is wrong” and not fall for his charms. Which is why I am not exactly sure what to make of the last 10 minutes that teases for a second installment. But my favourite shot is when Muthu goes to a textile shop where he meets Pallavi (Siddhi Idnani, in a badly-acted and bad-written romance) for the first time. The filmmaker has also taken a few criticisms of his previous films — with regard to normalising stalking — for the better. This is Simbu’s best acting in ages for the simple reason that we, thankfully, don’t see Simbu in the film. Aatrin payanam.” The choice that Muthu has made is “aatrin payanam”. We get this terrific line from Muthu’s friend Saravanan (Appukutty): “They are like big machines and we are just like screws on them, not knowing anything about the machine.” Come to think of it, the “machine analogy” gets fully-realised in the interval block when Muthu is forced to take a pistol to defend. At least that is how VTK opens, with Muthu (Silambarasan) being the ember in a dying fire who gets thrown out of it, as if to imply that he is a survivor. And the next 40-odd minutes is dedicated to the everydayness of Muthu’s life; the people he meets, the stories he listens to. Therefore, there is no urgency to rush over the story, no urgency for immediate pay-offs. And Gautham Menon anyway isn’t interested in telling the story of a gangster; he seems content with the journey itself. He seems interested in capturing the life of Muthu in real time.
Conceived as a two-part film, Gautham Vasudev Menon's film has all the familiar material that you expect from a gangster film but also a few departures and ...
The formulaic twist of using the wife/girlfriend as bait is quite disappointing (how it unfolds reminded me of Kaakha Kaakha), and I wish Siddhi had more to do in the film than play the love interest. Just how far Gautham has moved away from his previous filmography is evident in where the hero and heroine (Siddhi Idnani, playing Paavai) meet – in a small clothes shop where a shy Muthu needs to buy underwear. It’s a risk because the audience may complain that they didn’t understand a line here or there, but it makes the film sound a lot more authentic. Muthu’s back is covered with thorns as he jumps through the flames and over the fence to save his life – it’s a metaphor for what’s to come. When his mother (Radikaa looks miscast) makes him remove his shirt to make a point about their suffering to his uncle, you can see the loss of dignity in his face – and he conveys it without needing to break into tears. He’s shown to be fearless in his village, but it’s more the fight of a cornered animal than the flamboyance of a hero.
Despite intriguing ideas and an invested Simbu, VTK's refusal to dive deep into the world of immigrants and gangsters means that a lot of potential feels ...
And yet, we are expected to fill up a lot of such meaning and detail in our head, with the film not quite showing great desire in wading into them. And much like in that series where the wand is said to choose the owner, here too, someone says that the gun picks its master. The high point that the first half of VTK moves towards too, is somewhat similar. How has it affected him, and how has he affected it? I also enjoyed that Madhushree’s ‘Mallipoo’ is sung not from the perspective of the dozens of dancing men, but the lonely woman we don’t see in the video call. The allegory, of course, is of people—like Muthu—whose lives hurt and hurt without respite. And when Paavai eventually wears wedding clothes, that’s when you know she’s in real trouble in the GVM universe. Sophistication is a luxury for the impoverished Muthu (Simbu maintains a rather distinct, lopsided walk throughout the film). Someone else says that the gun controls the man and not the other way round. This scorched setting of Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu Part 1: The Kindling, while the title flashes, serves as a prelude for what is to follow during the remainder of the film as Muthu negotiates with the life-equivalent of fires and thorns. [played by a thoroughly invested Simbu](https://www.cinemaexpress.com/tamil/interviews/2022/sep/14/silambarasan-tr-gvm-brings-out-the-real-actor-in-me-34668.html)—is unusual too in the GVM world. At several points in the film, the strange power of this gun is alluded to, almost like it were the Elder Wand in Harry Potter.

But, we still get a gentle feel of Gautham’s touch in the way love sequences are choreographed. However, what doesn't sit quite well is a dialogue where Sridharan (Neeraj Madhav) says, "Enna Oru pombala maari vechurukanga" (They are treating me like a woman), to express that he is exploited at work. They prepare us minute-by-minute to experience the most anticipated moment of the film and then excite us with a brilliant payoff. Everytime Muthu (Simbu) plots to escape, he is further plunged into the depths of the world of crime. There are moments of quirky humor that have worked well in the VTK. He migrates to Mumbai, the city of dreams to create a hopeful future for his mother and sister.

[Facebook ](https://www.facebook.com/deccanherald/) Simbu internalises the pain of an accidental criminal who is always regretful of taking lives.
