From Jaipur, the cheetahs will be transferred by helicopter to Kuno National Park, where they will be welcomed by a delegation led by PM Modi. The farm workers nursed the cheetah back to health before it was taken into the CCF rehabilitation programme in January 2018. The aircraft was sourced by Action Aviation, a large aircraft brokerage company. The big cats were rescued by the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) and they have been living at the CCF centre since September 2020. The eight cheetahs that are being brought to India include five females and three males. Its mother was part of the CCF’s rehabilitation programme and had been released into the wild two years ago. After the species went extinct in the country in 1952, India made a commitment to return cheetahs to several locations within the nation, the first being Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. CCF is a not-for-profit organisation, headquartered in Namibia, which works towards saving and rehabilitating cheetahs in the wild. This is the first time that a wild southern African cheetah will be introduced in India, or in Asia, or on any other continent. India is all set to welcome eight cheetahs on September 17 when the big cats will be brought in from Namibia as part of a special agreement. The day also happens to be the birthday of the prime minister.

But the government and conservationists feel that African Cheetahs will adapt to KNP due to the similarity of habitat and that enough safeguards — enhanced protection, prey and predator base assessment, grassland and water management, and personnel training — are in place to ensure the smallest of the big cats find their feet in Kuno. The species was declared extinct in India after the last cheetah was killed in the 1950s. There is excitement and apprehension about the project, which the Supreme Court green-lighted in 2020.

“The cheetah has lost 90% of its global habitat in the past 100 years and now lives in 9 per cent of its historic range. The cheetah has gone extinct in a number of countries due to human activity, so it is our responsibility to ensure that it is brought back and preserved. And it is of great importance to the global conservation of the cheetah, which is critically endangered in many parts. Two subspecies, the Asiatic cheetah and the Northwest African cheetah, are listed as “critically endangered”. Since cheetahs do attack livestock, the biggest threat to the cheetah I would say, and to conservation projects like reintroduction in India, is from farmers trying to defend their livestock. And among those making the journey on the Boeing 747 jet is one of the world’s leading experts on cheetahs, Dr Laurie Marker, who says managing a human-animal conflict will be the biggest challenge in India.

How is the African Cheetah different from the Asiatic Cheetah? What is the controversy surrounding its translocation? What are the challenges ahead for ...

This is the largest population of wild cheetahs in the world. “There is no breeding of the Asiatic Cheetah in the wild, which is on the verge of extinction. These regions are getting hotter and drier due to climate change, affecting the antelope population that the cheetahs hunt. Cheetah numbers will be supplemented every year from Namibia and South Africa to create a sustainable population in Kuno and other national parks within India. The Kuno National Park is only 748 sq km in area. On January 28, 2020, the Supreme Court allowed the Centre to introduce the African Cheetah to a suitable habitat in India. Two subspecies, the Asiatic Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus) and the Northwest African Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus hecki) are listed as “Critically Endangered”. Tomorrow morning, eight African Cheetahs are to arrive from Namibia to Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park in an effort to reintroduce cheetahs in India after the Asiatic Cheetah became extinct in the 1950s due to indiscriminate hunting. Another important reason for widespread criticism of the project is that Kuno National Park was initially identified for the translocation of the Asiatic Lion from Gujarat’s Gir where an isolated population of around 600 are surviving, but are threatened because of the lack of genetic diversity and a larger range distribution for their habitat. How is the African Cheetah different from the Asiatic Cheetah? First and foremost, several wildlife biologists and wildlife experts have asked if India can provide the expanse of land and resources for cheetahs to thrive once again in India. What is the controversy surrounding its translocation?

Once the cheetah is found to have acclimatised, they will be released into the Kuno National Park. He added, “This population size (of the cheetah) will not be limited to this first batch. From Jaipur, they will be airlifted in helicopters and begin the final 42-minute flight to Kuno National Park, where a temporary helipad has been constructed to receive the animals. After being monitored closely for 30 days, they will be released into a bigger enclosure of 6 square km for the period that it takes them to adapt. The cheetahs will be transported in cages, in keeping with international specifications, of 114cm x 118cm x 84cm dimensions. In the Kalahari, the cheetah was once critically endangered due to poaching and hunting. The south-eastern portion of this area is patchily connected to the Panna-Tiger Reserve through the Madhav National Park-Shivpuri Forest Division. The leopard and striped hyena are currently the only larger carnivores within the national park, the single lone tiger having returned to Ranthambore in 2019-20. The cheetahs in South Africa are largely kept in privately-owned fenced reserves. During the decades preceding independence, as well as those after, India’s emphasis on agriculture – which included acquiring and parcelling off grassland – led to a decline in the cheetah’s habitat. The cheetah was officially declared extinct by the Indian government in 1952. Eight African cheetahs from Namibia — five females and three males between the ages of 4-6 years — will be flown 8,000 km over the Indian ocean to the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, where they will be released as part of India’s Rs 90-crore Cheetah Introduction project.

Cheetah In India: भारत से मिला दुनिया को 'चीता' का नाम, कूनो में 20 बसाए ... (Times Now Navbharat)

Cheetah In India:

Cheetahs will be seen running again in India after 70 years. The first pictures of the majestic animal have been shared online. Take a look.

Once the mandatory isolation is over, they will be moved to a larger enclosure for around three months, before being freed in the jungles of the 748 square km Park. Officials at the Jaipur International Airport said that these cheetahs will be flagged off from Namibian capital Windhoek at 9 pm on September 16 and the plane will reach land here at around 8 am the next day after a journey of 11 hours. Cheetahs will land in India amid much excitement among the countrymen.

Where the cheetah's speed comes from (Hindustan Times)

In a later study, published in Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology this year, Kamimura and colleagues examined the impact of collision when the cheetah’s feet touch the ground. In their April study, in which Kamimura’s team focused on when the cheetah’s feet touch the ground, the researchers accounted for the difference in ground-contact timings between the forelegs and hind legs. “In the flight phase, the cheetah’s body receives only gravitational force… It needs to pause and catch its breath to allow the muscles recover. The cheetah’s collarbones are small and the shoulder blades, which are vertical, are not attached to the collarbone, an adaptation that allows it to take longer strides. It is a question that continues to intrigue scientists.

Why there is hope for the cheetah in India (The Indian Express)

Bringing a carnivore back into a system where the landscape is shared with humans can be a dangerous mission, but conservation history has shown us that it ...

While only time will tell whether the conservation introduction of the cheetah can outrun its critics, I cannot but be optimistic about the beginning of a trail of bold and intensive conservation decisions in India, perhaps starting with the cheetah project. While many believe that moving cheetahs to Kuno might prevent the eventual reintroduction of lions in the landscape altogether, if I were to be optimistic and put our bets on having both species brought into the same landscape, then it is prudent to first bring the cheetah — the weaker of the two competing carnivores — so that they are settled and aware of escape terrains by the time the lions arrive. Were the reintroductions of tigers in Sariska or Panna needed to safeguard the species in India? India is a strong example in this regard; intense protection and management of habitats have been undertaken with tigers and lions at the forefront. However, India has lost one of its most charismatic carnivores — the Asiatic cheetah, considered to have gone locally extinct in 1952 owing to hunting, habitat loss and massive capture and use in shikar entourages. Carnivores as a group are particularly vulnerable to extinction events in the Anthropocene because members of this highly charismatic taxa are at direct odds with human interests — they need large chunks of habitats to live and breed, they eat the same food as we do, they are fond of our livestock and pets (even us) as food, and they are often worth more dead than alive.

The Boeing 747 'Jumbo Jet' aircraft that is bringing the eight cheetahs to India is a B747-400 passenger jet. The Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh has been chosen as the optimum location to introduce the extinct animal for its good prey base for cheetahs. The eight cheetahs that are being brought to India include five females and three males. In July 2020, India and the Republic of Namibia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) around the conservation of cheetahs. From Jaipur, the cheetahs will be transferred by helicopter to Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, where they will be welcomed by a delegation led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This is the first time that wild southern African cheetahs will be introduced in India, or in Asia, or on any other continent.

Cheetahs to set foot in India after 70 years (Hindustan Times)

PM Narendra Modi, who turns 72 today, will release the animals into an enclosure spread over 10km around 10.45am in the presence of Madhya Pradesh chief ...

In July, 2022, India signed an agreement with Namibia to import cheetahs for five years with the first tranche of eight cheetahs. They also said that the cheetah population in Africa has grown at the rate of 7-8% annually, indicating that breeding is not a problem. “We are confident that KNP and Sheopur will be known the world over and it will generate a lot of employment opportunities for the people, especially young people.” On Saturday, state home minister Narottam Mishra announced that all the police patrol vehicles will now be called cheetah mobiles to mark the translocation. In 2009, then environment minister Jairam Ramesh tried to get cheetahs from Africa and even appointed an expert panel to select habitats for them. The 6 sq km enclosure is divided into nine parts and it is highly secured with solar electric fencing to keep leopards and other wild animals away,” said JS Chouhan, chief wildlife warden of MP. They were scheduled to depart from Windhoek at 6pm(India time) on Friday and land in Gwalior at around 7am, ending an 11-hour-long flight that will count among the world’s longest translocation of wild animals. To prevent any hunting, police dogs will be deployed outside the enclosures, he said. The cheetah was completely wiped out from India due to excessive hunting and shrinking grasslands, its natural habitat. Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno Palpur National Park (KNP) geared itself for the arrival of eight cheetahs from Namibia on Saturday morning, marking a historic return of the predator seven decades after it went extinct in India. Five helipads have been constructed in Palpur, 18km inside the national park, to receive the cheetahs. “The other five will be released by forest officials,” he said.

Cheetahs have landed in Kuno National Park from Gwalior Air Force Station as PM Modi is on his way to Madhya Pradesh. The cheetahs are set to be released by ...

At around 10.45 am on September 17, which is also Modi's birthday, three of the cheetahs will be released in quarantine enclosures of the park by the Prime Minister. "The countrymen will have to show patience, wait for a few months to see the cheetahs released in the Kuno National Park. On a historic occasion, 8 Cheetahs - that arrived from Namibia this morning - will be released at the Kuno National Park. For these cheetahs to be able to make Kuno National Park their home, we will have to give these cheetahs a few months' time" The PM will also attend a program of Self Help Groups in Sheopur. PM Narendra Modi released the cheetahs flown in from Namibia into special enclosure in Kuno National Park of Madhya Pradesh. In 1952, the Indian government officially declared the cheetah extinct in the country. Maharaja Ramanuj Pratap Singh Deo of Korea, Madhya Pradesh is believed to have killed the last three cheetahs in the country in 1947. "Today, the India of the 21st century is giving a message to the whole world that economy and ecology are not conflicting fields. A dais was set up in the Park under which special cages carrying cheetahs were kept and Modi, who turned 72 on Saturday, released three of them in an enclosure by operating a lever. Experts also worry if such a relocation will yield fruit in the long term and cheetahs will not be killed, poached or attacked by other predators. The move, debated by wildlife experts, has many biologists worrying if endangered cheetahs would be safe in a country vying for real estate in a space where land crunch has prices soaring already.

Explained: Conservationists Think Translocating African Cheetahs ... (IndiaSpend)

But experts say that India does not have the habitat or prey species for wild, free-roaming African cheetahs, the project will not fulfil its aim of grassland ...

Another issue is the Cheetah is one of the widest-ranging of big cats, and known to travel across areas in excess of 1,000 sq km in a year. The government has still not implemented the 2013 court order to translocate Asiatic lions, of which there are only around 700 in the world, from Gir, Gujarat to KNP but they are quick to implement a 2020 order to bring in cheetahs from Africa, which number around 7,000 in the world. Another major objective of this project is to use the cheetah as a "charismatic flagship and umbrella species" to garner resources for restoring open forest and savanna systems that will benefit biodiversity. [ press release](https://www.indiaspend.com/h-library/mission-cheetah-fact-sheet-with-bios.pdf) by the Cheetah Conservation Fund which is overseeing this project.
