'Dahan: Raakan Ka Rahasya' review: An overheated battle between ... (Scroll.in)

It begins badly for Indian Administrative Service officer Avni, as it does for Dahan: Raakan Ka Rahasya. The Disney+ Hotstar series is a severely stretched ...

The series loses no opportunity to mine dramatic potential out of obscurantism, including bug-eyed exorcism rituals, characters who lose their bearings, and frightening visuals as Avni and Anay began to question their mental state. Avni’s ornithologist friend Sandeep (Ankur Nayyar), who randomly happens to be around in Shilaspura at the same time as her, contributes his share to the action. Vikranth Pawar has created and directed Dahan (The Burning). Her only ally is the mine’s general manager (Jaimini Pathak), who can’t wait to start drilling. Labouring under the twin shadows of a corruption allegation and her husband’s suicide, Avni (Tisca Chopra) requests a transfer to Shilaspura. One is that the writ of the state doesn’t reach this lawless corner of India.

Dahan- Rakan Ka Rahasya review: Tisca Chopra, Saurabh Shukla ... (DNA India)

Dahan will certainly challenge your beliefs on facts, and you will binge-watch the series in one go.

The action and gore also support the narrative, and it is not weak-hearted. For ages, Silaspura is under the threat of Ridhiyakan and his inhuman army of Rakan. Writer-director Vikrant Pawar manages to keep up the unpredictability factor intact, and the plot keeps getting intense as the show progresses. But the plot is multi-layered with distinctive characters, and their subplots. Dahan review: Bollywood has churned up mundane horror flicks, and the fan base of the genre felt cheated. Synopsis: A disgraced IAS officer Avni Raut takes charge of bringing development to the town of Silaspura.

Even with it’s flaws and loopholes, the horror sans supernatural series has the potential to shake you up to the core by the time end credits of the final episode roll in front of your screen. The makers ought to be lauded as they have not diluted the essence of the local language by oversimplifying it for the audience. To add to that, the art direction of Dahan has to be one of the best in recent times. The thrilling climax would have you by the edge of your seats, gnawing at your nails with fear and anticipation. In essence, it breaks every rule from the horror handbook but in turn paves way for a more realistic and organic narrative to flourish. With nine episodes to its credit, the makers try to establish the various plot devices and flesh out character developments in the first five-six episodes.

Rajesh Tailang, Mukesh Tiwari, Rohan Joshi and Lehar Khan are good additions to the cast.

However, Dahan stays a slow burner throughout the show, and even the end doesn't satisfy you as it finishes on a confusing note. That being said, the cinematography and VFX get good numbers as it's a visual treat. However, it doesn't seem to have the perfect storyline to keep the show going. Her screen presence makes you hooked on the show and also entangles your mind to wonder if she is a protagonist or if she will turn out to be the main antagonist. Meanwhile, Rajesh Tailang's character is one of the most surprising elements of the story. Tisca Chopra's Supernatural Thriller Series 'Dahan' Missed The ... (India Times)

The Horror genre on Indian OTT hasn't been explored all that much, but dispelling the stigma, today saw the debut of Tisca Chopra's horror and ...

Another thing to note is that the narration for the series is quite slow and drawn out. Although Tisca Chopra did a good job playing Avani, the writing should have given the actress's emotional journey as her past haunts her Rajesh Tailang has performed admirably in the series, and Saurabh Shukla, as usual, has excelled in the part of Godman. The dialogue in the show is fantastic, actors have done a great job at switching between Rajasthani and Hindi dialects. Special kudos go to Dahan's art director; to be honest, it was one of the nicest sets. Usually, the horror genre struggles to live up to viewers' expectations because they watch any programme or movie hoping to be thrilled and terrified. But an IAS officer embarks on a mission to dispel the village's long-standing superstitions in the wake of enigmatic killings and disappearances. The godman Pramukh leads a faction of the villagers who think the mine is a bloodthirsty demon's dwelling ‘Raka’. In essence, the writers want us to think that it's sophisticated, but it's really just a straightforward tale in which superstition doubts without any reason. For example, In a scene where Avani unlocks a Pandora's Box, chaos ensues but unlike like another horror genre where you would see some action or the scene might scare you, Dahan does not immediately plunge you into the action. However, the series fell short of our expectations.](#highlight_113989) [The series' narrative is overly drawn out for no good reason; they should have made a movie instead.](#highlight_113990) However, the series fell short of our expectations.
