साल 1950 में चीन ने ताइवान के बाहरी इलाकों पर हमला किया जिसके जवाब में अमेरिका ने ताइवान के समर्थन में जहाज भेजे. हालांकि, जो बाइडन के इस बयान के बाद व्हाइट हाउस ने फिर से दोहराया है कि ताइवान के लिए अमेरिकी नीति में कोई बदलाव नहीं हुआ है. लेकिन दूसरी तरफ अमेरिका ताइवान के साथ ताइवान संबंध अधिनियम ( Taiwan Relations Act ) के तहत घनिष्ठता भी बनाये रखता है और ताइवान को हथियार बेचता है. अमेरिका ताइवान की रक्षा के लिए प्रतिबद्ध नहीं है, लेकिन विकल्प को भी खारिज नहीं करता है. अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति जो बाइडन (Joe Biden Interview) ने अपने एक टीवी इंटरव्यू में कहा कि चीन द्वारा हमले की स्थिति में अमेरिका ताइवान की रक्षा करेगा. विशेषज्ञों का मानना है कि ताइवान को लेकर अमेरिका की नीति हमेशा ‘रणनीतिक अस्पष्टता’ में से एक रही है. ताइवान संबंध अधिनियम के तहत यह कहा गया है कि अमेरिका को इस द्वीप को अपनी रक्षा के लिए साधन प्रदान करना चाहिए. इसलिए अमेरिका इसे एक अलग देश के रूप में मान्यता नहीं देता है और इस द्वीप के साथ उसका कोई राजनयिक संबंध नहीं है. जिसके बाद से अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर चीन और अमेरिका के बीच ताइवान को लेकर विवाद और गहरा गया है. अब फिर से अमेरिका ने मुखरता के साथ यह बात कही है कि वह हर स्थिति में ताइवान के साथ खड़ा है और अगर युद्ध की नौबत आती है, तो ताइवान को सैन्य रक्षा भी मुहैया कराएगा. इस टीवी इंटरव्यू में जो बाइडन से पूछा गया था कि क्या अमेरिकी सेना ताइवान की रक्षा करेगी. जो बाइडन (Joe Biden) ने यह बात अपने एक इंटरव्यू में कही है, जिसके बाद से अमेरिका और चीन के बीच तनाव फिर से बढ़ गया है.
