Pakistan’s players wore a special kit in the game on which their names and numbers are shown submerged in water, to show solidarity with victims of the floods in the country. Pakistan opener Mohammad Rizwan scored 46-ball 68 to help Pakistan to 158-7 in their 20 overs after England sent them in to bat at a capacity National stadium. A new-look England side took the opening Twenty20 international by six wickets in Karachi on Tuesday, caping their return to Pakistan after 17 years in a memorable way.

Alex Hales scored a half-century on his return to international cricket as England marked their first match in Pakistan for 17 years with a six-wicket T20 ...

The turning point came in the 15th over, as Brook played a brilliant ramp shot to send Shahnawaz Dahani's delivery over short fine leg for a boundary. The required run rate initially continued to rise as both Brook and Hales largely accepted working singles from Pakistan's spinners. There was a little bit of fortune too, as he was put down twice by Pakistan. Curran (1-30) and Gleeson 0-13) were both able to limit scoring opportunities. Rashid then took his second wicket as T20I debutant Shan Masood was caught attempting a reverse sweep. Alex Hales scored a half-century on his return to international cricket as England marked their first match in Pakistan for 17 years with a six-wicket T20 victory over the hosts.

Alex Hales and Luke Wood impress as England beat Pakistan by six ... (Evening Standard)

Alex Hales made an impressive return to the England side as he hit a half-century in England's T20 victory over Pakistan.

Rizwan was the key man, reaching his half-century in 32 balls with a swiped six off Rashid, but Haider holed out off Sam Curran. They took a particular liking to David Willey, who was unable to extract his usual swing with the new ball, as he leaked 26 from two costly overs at the top. When Rizwan was stumped off Moeen, who hurled one down after spotting the batter’s charge, England were on top. Hales was involved in a pair of 34-run stands as the target dropped steadily, only for Usman Qadir to end both. The opener was back in the England set-up for the first time since March 2019, when he was axed following a failed recreational drugs test. The much-discussed return from Hales started modestly, Naseem Shah slipping one through to the keeper as he wafted stiffly outside off.

England bowl, debuts for Luke Wood and Shan Masood (ESPNcricinfo.com)

Alex Hales returns for England after three years out; Pakistan stick with Babar Azam and Mohammed Rizwan as openers.

The only new cap was Wood, an unused member of the ODI squad in the Netherlands earlier this year. England selected a much-changed side, with Hales back, Salt opening for the first time and Duckett playing his second T20I three years on from the first. Usually charged with the new ball in search of early swing, Wood was instead first change, but conceded just 12 runs from his two overs in the powerplay. Babar made 68 runs in six innings at the Asia Cup and, while he clearly needed time in the middle in search of some form, there had been a suggestion that Rizwan would be rested, allowing Masood to bat in his preferred position at opener and Mohammad Haris to take the gloves. 4, top-edged a reverse-sweep to the edge of the ring for 7 off seven balls, Pakistan had lost 4 for 35 off 35 balls. Hales only managed one boundary with the field out between the seventh and 14th overs, and on 28 from 22 he was dropped in the deep by Shan Masood looking to manufacture a slog-sweep off Qadir. Rizwan continued his good form from the Asia Cup, top-scoring with 68 from 46, but the middle and lower order failed to fire, Iftikhar Ahmed's three sixes in 28 from 17 providing only a flicker of the aggression needed on a placid batting surface, as England debutant [Luke Wood](http://www.espncricinfo.com/player/luke-wood-573170)finished with 3 for 24. Whether that is an ideal distribution of resources is a debate that will continue to rage. His second legitimate delivery was clattered through backward point in trademark, long-levered style and, although he was not at his most fluent, there was plenty of ringcraft about Hales' innings as he anchored the chase. First Babar was unstitched by Adil Rashid's googly, ending the partnership at 85 in the tenth over. Hales fell for 53 off 40 with 17 needed but an unbeaten 42 from [Harry Brook](http://www.espncricinfo.com/player/harry-brook-911707), in his fifth T20I, saw England home with four balls to spare. In response, Hales was the glue that held England's chase together.

Alex Hales, Harry Brook lead England past Pakistan in opening T20 (DAWN.com)

England chase target of 158 in 19.2 overs with six wickets to spare, lead seven-match series 1-0.

Fast bowler Haris Rauf did get Hales in the 17th, but that was too late for Pakistan with England needing just 16 off 18. Shan’s debut was spoiled when the left-hander fell to Rashid in the next over with Pakistan at 127-4 by the end of the 16th over. Hales put up short partnerships of 34 off 23 and 34 off 27 with Dawid Malan and Duckett respectively before the duo was undone by Usman to allow Brook to arrive in the middle. The Pakistan openers kept scoring freely, only until England leg-spinner Adil Rashid bamboozled Babar with an unplayable googly that castled the right-hander in the 10th over, leaving Pakistan at 87-1 by the end of it. With the comfort of having Hales at the other end, Brook ensured England kept the asking rate under control and launched his match-winning onslaught with a straight hit off an Usman full toss in the 13th. England did lose Ben Duckett two balls later, but the arriving Harry Brook carried his team across the finish line with four balls and six wickets to spare in the first of the seven Twenty20 Internationals here at the National Stadium on Tuesday.
