'Chup!' movie review: R. Balki's thriller has its moments, but falls ... (The Hindu)

Despite Dulquer Salmaan and Shreya Dhanwanthary in fine form, the primary conceit of 'Chup' doesn't hold, and the smart wordplay and topical observations ...

When the backstory doesn’t match the punishment meted out to critics, the climax is reduced to a charade. Then there is Pooja Bhatt, whose father has made self-referential cinema, as a criminal psychologist to read the mind of the killer on the prowl. A natural performer, Shreya Dhanwanthary has cracked the role of a journalist. Cleansing one for the interest of others is no way to progress; the fun lies in the subjectivity of the art. With Guru Dutt’s classic — which was panned by critics of the time — as the reference point, Chup, on the surface is about a psychopath maiming film critics for giving inappropriate ratings to films. But at the core, the three writers of the film, one of whom is a noted movie critic Raja Sen, project the killer as a kind of self-appointed vigilante who is out there to save cinema from mediocrity and impose the tyranny of taste.

Chup movie review: Look beyond the gore — this R Balki film poses ... (CNBCTV18)

Starring Sunny Deol, Dulquer Salmaan, Shreya Dhanwantry, and Pooja Bhatt in key roles, Chup: Revenge of the Artist is a homage to Bombay and the love for ...

He stars as himself in a cameo, breaking the fourth wall, and delineating the need for responsible film criticism. Gore, butchery, and barbarity aside, Chup is surprisingly original in what it wants to say and the way it goes about it. Set amid a profusion of flowers, it is a refreshing distraction from all the manslaughter. So if a critic writes that the first half of a film was in place but the second was totally off track, our killer will tie him up and put the lower half of his body on a railway track to be run under a locomotive. Chup follows Inspector Arvind Mathur (Sunny Deol), who is on the hunt for a psychopath that murders movie reviewers in Mumbai with great relish and imagination, using their words to dissect them, and engraving their star ratings on their foreheads. At a time when everyone with access to the internet and a social media account is a reviewer, Chup accords weight to what my lot does for a living.

Chup Movie Review: R Balki Film Attempts A Homage To Guru Dutt ... (ABP Live)

'Chup' feels like an unstable marriage of the artsy kind of cinema which has its own layers, tonality, experiment with form to the commercial kind with its ...

A film within a film, 'Chup' is reconstructed after the 'Revenge of the Artist', a rise of an alter-ego of modern auteur filmmaker who considers Guru Dutt his idol, inspiration and relates to his fate as an artist. He languors in prison happily celebrating the demise of a film critic to COVID-19 calling him 'so sensitive'. As the film nears its end, R Balki with his assured pace tends to connect the dots and brings all unfinished elements together, in the best show not tell fashion. A clever cameo of Amitabh Bachchan who emphasizes the importance of critiquing any art form or in society in general for it to evolve etc. For a change, 'Chup' also happens to be a film that gives cinema/ film as a medium its due respect and place in society. 'Chup' is very well-written in terms of the dialogues.

Chup review: Whew, this Dulquer thriller on serial killings of film ... (The News Minute)

It begins with a great idea, and one can appreciate the development of the script, but somewhere in its structuring and performances, the great idea gets a ...

The other storyline, of the killing and the investigation, has a nicely matured Sunny Deol leading the show. But the connections they make between the killings, the clues leading to the method of each murder, picking on the signs and symbols are all neatly written. The love between all the key characters comes through whiffs of fresh flowers and the music of black and white Hindi cinema. They do, as long as you are not jolted awake each time the shift happens, like a constant reminder that this is a movie, this is fiction. But snatching you from the thick of it, the film takes you to a flower shop and the man who owns it: out comes Dulquer with a beehive of curls on his head, looking fresh and cheerful, and taking two cups of tea at a cute garden. The scene ends in a scream (not yours) and the first body is found.

Chup: Revenge of the Artist had a decent opening in theatres on Friday despite being a smaller film compared to the recent Bollywood releases. The film by R Balki is a psychological thriller about a serial killer who targets film critics. When you say critiquing, it is about analysing the film.

Chup Review: Dulquer Salmaan Carries The Film, Sunny Deol ... (NDTV)

Cast: Sunny Deol, Dulquer Salmaan, Pooja Bhatt, Shreya Dhanwanthary. Director: R Balki. Rating: 2 stars (out of 5). Every filmmaker isn't an artist.

If only he went just a tad easier on that aspect of his personality, he would have done more justice to the wide range of emotions that he is required to pack into the performance. In a way, Chup has the feel of an extended cinematic exercise by a troll intent on showing film critics their place in the food chain. Well, Chup ties itself up in knots in trying to find a rationale for the actions of the killer, laboriously delving into the character's past and the long-term impact it has had on his mind and heart. Chup hinges on the inference that Guru Dutt was pushed to an untimely death by the fact that critics pilloriedKaagaz Ke Phool, a deeply personal essay that enumerated the struggles of being a filmmaker in a highly commercialised industry. The 135-minute film opens with the gruesome killing of a veteran film critic, found bloodied in the loo of his own apartment. Chup - Revenge of the Artist - ignores these distinctions between the magical and the humdrum to craft a thriller about a serial killer who believes criticism is evil and targets film critics for their opinions.
