It would be an uphill task for Renuka to replicate what Jhulan has done over the years. “I used to play with my elder brother (Vinod) and his friends, and normally in the gully cricket, no one wants to bowl. She has been the James Anderson of women’s cricket. But, before that, her teammates, the England players, the crowd and even the umpires at Lord’s had shown how much respect she commanded as a one-of-kind cricketer. When Jhulan took up fast bowling, after watching Australia’s Cathryn Fitzpatrick in the 1997 Women’s World Cup final at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, where she was a ball girl, she didn’t have any Indian female quick to emulate. Suddenly, the Indian women’s team is without its own Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev. And she has been one half of a magnificent duo that helped the Indian women’s cricketers check out of dormitories and check into five-star hotels. Her long arms went up in the air.

"Even in the huddle before the game, I told her when I was going through the best time, many people were around me and supporting me but in my rough times, she was the only one who was backing and supporting me and I just wanted to say thank you to her.
