Kantara Review: Rishab Shetty Leaves You With An Experience To ... (Film Companion)

The beautifully-shot and performed film, with its roots in Dakshina Kannada, speaks of power equations, the Bhoota Kola tradition and how human kindness ...

For me, the film is about how a man eventually accepts his destiny, and how his heart expands to love those who he previously loathed, including the forest officer. Among the biggest pluses in the film is Arvind S Kashyap’s cinematography. The last 15 minutes of the movie feature a fabulously choreographed and shot sequence, where Rishab seems to have been in a trance of his own. A torch is used as a signal for an illicit union in a farm, the bushes sometimes reveal a couple or two. He’s the village ruffian, picking up quarrels, drinking himself silly and loving Leela (a radiant Sapthami Gowda, who is such a natural) in the way he can. It is difficult to write a review of the Kannada film Kantara, starring Rishab Shetty, Achyuth Kumar and Kishore Kumar, among others, because an experience can only be gone through, never explained.

Kantara Movie Review (Firstpost)

Kantara is an important story that is portrayed stunningly with the help of folklore, and art that is native to the Kundapura area. Rishab Shetty has performed ...

Overall though, this is film that one must watch just to understand the dynamics of a life lived in interior parts of Karnataka. It is inspired partly by facts, like Marilyn Monroe’s marriages, and partly by scandals and rumours, like the one with President John F. It is understandable that the film is set in 90s, but pinching the waist, or using certain situations to touch her left me cringing in my seat. There is but one complaint that I have of this film and it is the way Shiva woos Leela. The last 40 minutes of the film is where Rishab has truly outdone himself, and every moment is gravitating. This is an issue that persists in India today, but filmmaker and lead actor in the film — Rishab Shetty — has set the story mainly in the 1990s. This is something that the director-actor’s friends had hyped up before the release of the film. However, the community in the film has a guardian angel, and that is their deity. He sees a performance of Bhoota Kola (an animist form of spirit worship that is native to the costal districts of Tulunadu and some parts of Malenadu in Karnataka and Kasargod in Kerala). It is a simple tale about a community reclaiming the lands that were originally theirs, owed to them by a man who bartered with them. The most important characteristic of this film — despite its flaws — is how it chooses to encapsulate the fight of the tribal community for their land. It is a rooted, it is vibrant and it is performed so stunningly, that there are moments that leave you in goose bumps.

[Dailymotion ](https://www.dailymotion.com/DeccanHerald) [Facebook ](https://www.facebook.com/deccanherald/) [Twitter ](https://twitter.com/DeccanHerald) There is a constant shift in mood in the film and Ajaneesh’s background score, at every turn of the plot, is dipped in authenticity. Amidst this, there is also a landlord (Achyuth Kumar) who seems to support the locals when government intervention spells trouble for the village. In ‘Kantara’, director Rishab Shetty introduces this world to us in a terrific opening stretch that shows how the King in a village amidst a forest in Kundapura donates various areas of his land to the villagers for a ‘special’ stone.

Kantara (Khaleej Times)

Set in the fictional village of Dakshina Kannada, Kantara is a visual grandeur that brings alive the traditional culture of Kambla and Bhootha Kola.

The soul of the story is on human and nature conflict in which Shiva is the rebellion and works against nature. In the story, there is a ripple when a battle of ego swirls along the tradition and culture of the land. Set in the fictional village of Dakshina Kannada, Kantara is a visual grandeur that brings alive the traditional culture of Kambla and Bhootha Kola.

Kantara review: Spotlight's firmly on Rishab Shetty in this glorious ... (OTTplay)

An intensely engaging story based on folklore from coastal Karnataka, Rishab Shetty's film is an absolute winner.

But if you at least manage to create an iota of interest in the subject among this audience, it’s a job well done. Rishab can take credit for writing the world of Kantara, but showing it to us as a visual spectacle is Aravind and his lens. Taking a rooted tale and presenting it to a larger audience is a gamble; not everyone may take a shine to it. Rishab’s film had me glued to my seat from start to finish even though I could not comprehend the significance of Bhoothakola or Daivaradhane, as practised in the region. And I say this as someone who has absolutely no understanding of the culture and traditions of Kundapura. The conflicts that arise between the villagers, the forest department, and the landlord form the crux of this tale.

Kantara review: Rishab Shetty's film is vivid, powerful and just pure fun (The News Minute)

While the film relies heavily on the mystique of centuries-old folklore and traditions, Rishab Shetty presents it in the garb of a masala film that is not ...

Rishab Shetty, the actor, is particularly effective in the film and that’s because he is fully aware of the pitch and tone of his performance. The template of using not one but two nemeses is nothing new but it’s the staging that does the trick. Suttur is the local landlord and a congenial well-wisher of the village (and of Shiva, in particular), but it doesn’t take much to guess that there’s more to him than meets the eye (we are even told that he is heir to the land that the king “gave away” many moons ago). So, when Murali’s stubbornness encounters Shiva’s bravado, it’s a clash of epic proportions and we feel we are nudged towards an ultra-masculine, egotistic faceoff that is similar to the one in the 2020 Malayalam film Ayyapanum Koshiyum. Rishab also plays the hero Shiva, a valiant but hot-headed Kambala champion who is also the living embodiment of the abandon of his village. And simultaneously, the same mystical energy allows for the hero of the film to pave a rite of passage for himself and transcend into a living myth in front of his own people.

Kantara Movie Review: This Rishab Shetty starrer folklore drama is ... (PINKVILLA)

Kantara starring Rishab Shetty shows the difficulties the performers go through in the Kola tradition.

There are not many loopholes in the film to talk about. All that happens in the forest, to whom it belongs to, and what happens to those localites when people with power try to occupy it is shown in the film. The youngsters and the elders in the forest are busy with their lives. The immediate next thing that needs to be talked about is the visuals. Every scene, angles of the camera and focus are perfect, especially the scenes where the gala in the village, the bullfights and Kola. Within the first fifteen minutes, the story and the characters are developed neatly. But when you question if he is a god or if is it a performer who pretends to be the god, it will be the end of your life. He is in love with Leela (Saptami Gowda) from the same village. Shiva grows up into a handsome young man and the most eligible bachelor in the village. That's what the film is all about. It is said when the god arrives, he will answer all your questions. The entire credit of the film goes to Rishab Shetty.

'Kantara' movie review: Rishab Shetty bats for folklore and native ... (The Hindu)

Actor-director Rishab Shetty excels in his endeavour to raise pivotal issues that affect the tribal people.

But, it is cataclysmic that in his enthusiasm to showcase, native culture, Rishab glamourises native practices. Kishore, as a law-abiding forest officer whose heart is with the protection of the oppressed community, steals the show. It briefly takes a break in the 70s to inform the audience how a descendant of the King tries to reclaim the land, and finally unveils the strategies of the next generation feudal lord (Achyuth Kumar) to regain the land from the tribal community. Shiva is forced to fight with Murali, when he is caught in this crossfire. Trapped by the feudal lord, Shiva picks up fights with Murali, who thinks the former is a smuggler who uses native culture to loot the forest wealth. He succeeds in meticulously bringing a tale of myths, legends and superstition, and that too in his native dialect.
