Goodbye review: Talk of performances, Amitabh Bachchan takes the cake for his sheer sincerity, conviction and blending emotions so well in each scene.
Talk of performances, Amitabh Bachchan takes the cake for his sheer sincerity, conviction and blending emotions so well in each scene. He lifts the storyline from a boring and super dragged first half to a somewhat interesting beginning to the second half. Pavail, Sahil and Elli are good in their parts and do justice to the screentime they get. Is it a story about four siblings who are settled in different parts of the world and come together to say the last goodbye to their dead mother? For instance, Harish blindly follows his friend PP's (Ashish Vidyarthi) instructions and lets Gayatri's body be moved here and there to be kept in a particular direction. [Rashmika Mandanna](https://www.hindustantimes.com/topic/rashmika-mandanna)), a lawyer who's won her first case, is drowned in guilt for not taking her mother's last call or replying to her message. Is it a satire on the death rituals that are prevalent in the society? Amid all this, Harish, his Labrador named 'Stupid' and a house help are busy discussing the chores to be performed on Gayatri's funeral and last rites. There's another son, Nakul (Abhishekh Khan), who is out on a trekking expedition and realises about this loss much later than the rest of the family. Well, this is just 0.1% of the insensitivity and absurdity writer-director Vikas Bahl throws at us in this emotional rollercoaster of a funeral drama called Goodbye. [Amitabh Bachchan](https://www.hindustantimes.com/topic/amitabh-bachchan)) wait for their turn at the cremation ground, her neighbourhood ladies are busy thinking what to name the WhatsApp group they're making in the memory of the deceased. The so-called group of friends pose for a smiling selfie, after all a new WhatsApp group calls for a new profile picture.

Yes, there is the predictable monologue: can there be a Bachchan film without one of those? For the siblings, the death acts as a coming-of-age device. [Goodbye](https://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/bollywood/rashmika-mandanna-opens-about-drawing-a-line-with-her-parents-dont-try-to-control-my-life-8194651/)’, except for the presence of a few sardars, and a bunch of mourners who sound Punjabi. And that is down to the connection between the grieving Harish ( The warmth between the two is palpable. It’s also about what happens after you come back to an empty house, where the spirit of the deceased is still very much around.

Goodbye Review:
Goodbye Review In Hindi: क्या आप अपने परिवार से प्यार करते हैं और करते हैं तो कितना करते हैं.
Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Neena Gupta, Rashmika Mandanna and Pavail Gulati in prominent roles, the film explores how a family copes with grief after the death ...
Wish there was more of Neena Gupta on screen as she lights up the screen whenever she is there in it. The monologue, where he talks to his dead wife's ashes and gives a final goodbye to her - complaining to her all along- leaves a lump in your throat. The second half takes a more emotional turn as the family travels to Haridwar to perform the last rites and meets a philosophical priest played by Sunil Grover, who teaches a lesson or two to Tara - a complete nonbeliever. Like most Indian families, here too, it is the mother who holds the family together and so, after her death they all find themselves clashing with each other. As her siblings, all of who have been living outside of their homes and barely keeping in touch with each other, start arriving for her mother's last rites, Tara finds herself visiting old memories of the house with her mother. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Neena Gupta, Rashmika Mandanna and Pavail Gulati in prominent roles, the film explores how a family copes with grief after the death of a loved one.

#Goodbye A film for the whole family. [Deepika Padukone recalls how mom ensured depression treatment for her: 'Don't know what state I would be in'] [Rashmika Mandana](/topic/rashmika-mandana)and Amitabh Bachchan-starrer [Goodbye](/topic/goodbye)finally hit the theatres on October 7 and the film has been garnering positive reviews from critics and audiences, alike. Scroll down to know what netizens are saying about the movie.
The performances, despite Amitabh Bachchan headlining the cast, are rudimentary. The writing is inconsistent and aimed at the easily swayed.
But this is a film in which the only truly forlorn character is the family pet, a Golden Retriever named Stupid, who hangs around the portrait of the woman who brought him home as a puppy. If that sounds perfectly logical on the face of it, the priest's pronouncements become a pretext for Goodbye to peddle a whole lot of conservative claptrap and allow emotions to be drowned in cloying sentimentality. Tara registers her protest but she does so without the vehemence you expect from a girl with her own ideas about what constitutes the act of grieving for a lost one. He accompanies her to Chandigarh for the funeral and serves as one of the four pall-bearers. So, it creates room for a young rebellious girl who pooh-poohs elaborate rituals and keeps harping on the fact that this simply isn't the kind of final send-off that her free-spirited mother would have wanted. What is worse, some parts of the film only seem to trivialise the act of grieving and remembering. Tara has not seen eye to eye with her father for quite a while but she takes the first flight to Chandigarh to be by his side even as they continue to spar over little disagreements. The audience is merely told about his existence but not about his whereabouts. Sluggish, insubstantial and meandering, Goodbye never acquires the sort of gravitas one would expect from a film that wants to pass itself off as a mature, sensitive exploration of sorrow and its manifestations. It is difficult to miss the hint of sexism here. Goodbye will make you shed copious tears all right but leave you none the wiser about the act of processing of pain and tiding over it. In Goodbye, written and directed by Vikas Bahl, none of what could make it work over and beyond the surface level is allowed much space.
Here's our review of Vikas Bahl's 'Goodbye' starring Amitabh Bachchan, Rashmika Mandanna, and Neena Gupta. The film deals with the idea of family, ...
Because the truth is worth it.) Overall, Goodbye is constantly asking you to feel something or the other till it comes to an end with a half-baked lesson on ‘compromise’. The background score is neither too demanding of attention, nor easy to ignore completely, and that credit goes to Trivedi. His monologue with Gayatri’s ashes is one of the film’s most gripping scenes. Is it a study of grief and death? Is it making a commentary on the way people behave at funerals?
Vikas Bahl's family drama stars Amitabh Bachchan, Neena Gupta, Rashmika Mandanna and Pavail Gulati.
Buried in the unearned runtime of 144 minutes is a shorter, more moving, account of the many shades of grief. Besides, it is never clear why Tara is cross with Harish, or why Karan is self-serving to the extent of appearing obnoxious. The hectoring tone, loudest when Harish lectures away on the importance of following tradition, is as distracting as the off-putting comedy track. The Chandigarh-based version of the British comedy Death at a Funeral attempts to graft black humour onto the very serious business of mourning. The other flows from the film’s highlight: its ability to capture the lasting anguish that results from the demise of a family member. One of them is the direct result of his inability to end a scene when he should.
रश्मिका मंदाना की बॉलीवुड डेब्यू फिल्म 'गुडबाय' थिएटर में रिलीज हो चुकी है।
Goodbye releases in the theatres on October 7. · The film stars Amitabh Bachchan and Rashmika Mandanna among others. · It is written and directed by Vikas Bahl.
The unfiltered emotions in the film touch the right chord and even bring you closer to your loved ones. The star of the film is Amitabh Bachchan, of course. Vikas Bahl will leave you with many questions as you exit the theatres. Rashmika Mandanna struggles with the accent as she sounds too south for a Punjabi role. From preparing for the funeral with no space to grieve his wife's death to finally getting a moment to talk to her ashes, his role transforms, and your heart will break in both these moments. Even at 80, the megastar proves why he is one of the biggest superstars of Indian cinema. He perfectly portrays this borderline dysfunctional family who are dealing with the loss of that one person who held them all together. Even as you start questioning some of his ideas in the film, he will hit you with the ultimate emotions. We have watched several Bollywood films that deal with the loss of loved ones. There's a line in Life of Pi where Irrfan says, “I suppose in the end, the whole of life becomes an act of letting go, but what always hurts the most is not taking a moment to say goodbye.” This profound thought forms the crux of Goodbye. Goodbye will not be an easy watch if you have lost a parent or a loved one or are dealing with an ailing family member or friend. It questions the old and new beliefs.
The film manages to hinge on terrific performances by Amitabh Bachchan and Neena Gupta as Harish and Gayatri, and the ensemble cast comprising Rashmika Mandana, ...
Everyone is engrossed in their mobiles as they wait for their turn at the cremation ground and Gayatri’s friends alternate between figuring out the food to be sent to the grieving family and the new appropriate name for their WhatsApp group after Gayatri’s death. But she is ridden with guilt for having been partying and missing the last call with her mother. In Goodbye, he plays the role of a self-absorbed workaholic who cannot even keep his AirPods off while he carries the body of his mother to the cremation site with no lapses. Tara is almost estranged from the family due to her refusal to adhere to what she considers ‘illogical’ rituals, and for having a Muslim boyfriend. Nakul (Pavail Gulati) is a workaholic NRI, with a stereotypical sweet but confused wife Daisy (Elli Avram), who flies in to attend the cremation. Vikas Bahl’s Goodbye is an exploration of the many stages of grief after losing a loved one.
Director: Vikas Bahl. Writer: Vikas Bahl. Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Rashmika Mandanna, Neena Gupta, Pavail Gulati, Ashish Vidyarthi.
He is allowed to roam the entire house with the sort of puppy-like excitement that feels more at home in a hamfest like Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003), until he is finally – finally – told that Gayatri is gone. As is evident, the string-pulling in Goodbye is too contrived to be an honest snapshot of healing. In Maja Ma, the state of Gujarat is exoticised to soften the blow of a middle-aged woman’s coming-out tale; in Goodbye, her death is fetishised to teach viewers that nobody is wrong. But that’s not a hard thing to achieve these days, given that the finality of death – featuring long-drawn funerals, flashbacks, happy memories, a sad dog (named Stupid) – is far more pronounced in a post-pandemic world. As a result, Goodbye becomes the second Hindi film of the week to employ a woman as a device to trigger a diplomatic awakening. Yet, here she is someone with the scope for ‘improvement’ – she’s too woke, and therefore a sitting duck for moral lessons meted out by random pandits (“people need stories – mythology – to feel better”) on the riverbanks of Varanasi.

Amitabh Bachchan can't salvage this average study on grief and bereavement, marred by shallow characterisation and treatment.
The monologue where he speaks to the ashes of Gayatri is the high point of the film. Bahl attempts a tearjerker by combining the two templates, and it fails only to make us appreciate the craft of the likes of Mohan Kumar and Ravi Chopra who made us shed copious tears. But for the most part, it is like a heartwarming subject reduced to a cringe-fest in the hands of a filmmaker who doesn’t know his cinematic punctuation well. From Rajesh Khanna’s Avtaar and Swarg to Amitabh Bachchan’s Baghban, the list is comprehensive. The elder son Karan (Pavail Gulati) is unable to take his mind off the board meetings and his American wife Daisy (Elli AvrRam) struggles to fit in. Pandemic made us realise the fickle nature of life, and stories that explore the ache and anguish that comes from the unanticipated demise of a family member feels all the more real.

It would be a cliche to say that Goodbye has its heart in the right place, but this is a necessary cliche to describe a film, which, otherwise is all over the place. The only time one feels the hint of a tear is when Bachchan delivers his trademark monologue as he speaks to his wife’s urn of ashes. Bhalla gives his son a earful for having sex with his American wife (Elli Avram) on the night his mother has been cremated, only to be told that they were “not doing it for fun” but were trying to have a child because his late wife wanted grandchildren. The awkward meshing of genres — coming of age, tragi-comedy, leached-out drama — and a second half completely divorced in tone and texture from Half One make Goodbye a film that may have sounded promising on paper but fails irrevocably in execution. Harish Bhalla (Amitabh Bachchan in a very Amitabh Bachchan role) is grief-stricken, but also Hulk-level angry with his children — especially Tara (Rashmika Mandanna) and Karan (Pavail Gulati) — for not being around during their mothers’ last moments. However, this is exactly the kind of film that proves that good intentions don’t always a good film make.

As for the focal point of the film, Gayatri, undeniably Neena Gupta breezes in like a breath of fresh air and impregnates the film’s solemnity with her radiance. In fact, there are moments when both the storyline and the direction seem caught in a loop…But after the final loop when yet another son of the family makes it home, it suddenly breaks free. While in the beginning, the narrative questions the ritualistic practices associated with death through the rebel daughter of the family Tara (Rashmika Mandanna) in the final take it does not debunk them either. Sunil Grover as the computer-savvy pandit in Haridwar not only manages to break the ice between family members, but also decodes what is science and what is faith, the line often too thin. As the father Harish Bhalla (Amitabh Bachchan) breaks the news to his daughter and sons, there is palpable tension and animosity. This song by Amit Trivedi comes close to the finale, but carries the import of Vikas Bahl’s Goodbye in its lyrics by Swanand Kirkire.
