Prey movie review: Sorry Arnold, but this is the best Predator film now (Hindustan Times)

Prey movie review: Amber Midthunder stars in this smashing Predator sequel that is among the smartest action films made this year. | Hollywood.

Prey is an enjoyable watch, and at under a hundred minutes, it is crisp too. Yes, better hunters fall to the Predator while she survives but that is because she proves to be smarter. It gets into the thick of the action quickly. As for those wondering how a teenager can beat a Predator where an elite paramilitary team failed (in the original film), one needs to understand that even the Predator here is less evolved, with older technology, and less awareness than his 1987 descendant. That’s what Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) did in the 1987 original and that is exactly what Naru does in Prey. It cannot be beaten with technology or brute strength because there, it is far ahead of the humans. Prey is a throwback to the 80s’ Hollywood in more ways than one. Sticking faithfully to the premise of the first It can only be outfoxed by someone using their wits and superior knowledge of the surroundings. Apart from the original Predator (1987), none were received well by critics and the audiences. Between 1987 and 2018, there were four Predator films and two largely forgettable crossovers with the Alien franchise. It is a cunning hunter that uses technology and its wits to outfox its prey.

Prey movie review: A raw, gripping return to franchises roots, this ... (WION)

I remember thinking pitting a more primitive Predator, alien trophy hunters for whom human individuals are ridiculously easy prey, against a Native American ...

The CGI is a bit choppy, but splendid stunt work turns fights into gritty and muddy, but still gorgeous and often dance-like. It is a raw, primal return to the franchise's roots and in this scribe's opinion the best film in the series since the 1987 original. It is a jungle, after all, and a tale of a predator versus prey. Thankfully, not only is 'Prey' a riveting action-thriller, but it also gives the long-languishing 'Predator' franchise a shot in the arm. Dan Trachtenberg's 'Prey' is the fifth installment in the 'Prey' series. The alien warrior kills whoever he deems to be a threat in a variety of ways, each gut-churning bloody than the other.

Prey review: Predator prequel is an anti-colonial allegory wrapped ... (Firstpost)

Amber Midthunder takes down colonizers, both European and extra-terrestrial, in the strongest entry of the Predator franchise since the 1987 original.

We examine the concept of afternoon tea and its universal appeal as a meal. The final battle vs the Predator is a well-mounted exhibition of strategic criss-crossing and angular movements. Nuru uses what she knows about healing and hunting and what she learns about her enemy to gain the upper hand. Then, she weakens its defences, sets a trap for the handicapped creature, and uses its weapon against itself. Even before we first catch sight of the French hunters, the spectre of colonialism is rendered visible in a devastating scene where Naru happens upon a field full of skinned and rotting corpses of bison. The fierceness she lends to the character adds to the rhythm of the action. The rest of the tribe though refuse to believe her and insist it’s just a cougar — until an ambush makes them reconsider. Now, a prequel to all those movies pits the Predator against its most dauntless and resourceful adversary yet: a young 18th-century Comanche warrior with a point to prove to her tribe. It is possibly the first one to make the trip but obviously not the last. Prey is not too different from his feature debut 10 Cloverfield Lane in terms of how he builds a sophisticated genre outing in an existing sandbox and envisions a wholly original story without losing the tone and texture of its predecessor. What the Predator movies have always banked on is the intrigue of a mismatched contest. All this is of course prelude to the battle against the apex predator in humankind.

Prey Movie Review: The best Predator film since the original one... (Cinema Express)

By elongating the timeline and introducing the alien race to a new timestamp, the film also aces in creating a new future that can give rise to new sequels.

The biggest callback to the Predator franchise and subsequently, the Predator: 1718 comics, comes in form of a nifty little touch that the makers introduce in one of the film's last scenes. Violence is dialled up to 11 and that's anything but an issue to fans of the genre. Interestingly, this mix of abilities grants Naru the braveness to hunt and the knowledge to heal when needed and that ends up becoming her biggest strength. Speaking of time, at its heart, Prey is a coming-of-age film as it traverses through the life of Naru who is stuck in a male-dominated society. Technically, Prey is a prequel to all the films of the franchise and though we have seen Predators helping ancient humans as flash cuts in the Alien vs Predator films, this is the first time we witness people from the past facing off the alien. But unlike the first film, which was about a military team with their choppers and automated guns, Prey is based in the Comanche Nation in 1719.

Prey 2 Needs A Villain Hunter Like Naru (Not Just Another Predator) (Screen Rant)

Prey showed Naru as a formidable human hunter, and the perfect human antagonist for Prey 2 could be a rival hunter at her skill level.

Moreover, a hunter on Naru's level with the goal of achieving the glory making a trophy of the next Predator could be a human foe with opposing goals to really test Naru. However, another hunter like Naru occupying a villainous role to rival her would add a new dynamic to the story of Prey 2 by creating a triangular conflict. Some, like the French fur trappers, will stop at nothing to claim a Predator skull, even resorting to using other humans as bait. Prey also introduced a new version of the Predator, known as the "Feral Predator" as the enemy of Naru and the Comanche tribe. [Prey](https://screenrant.com/tag/predator-5/) follows the hunter heroine Naru, and Prey 2 can add to the impact she's had on the [Predator](https://screenrant.com/tag/predator/) franchise with a human hunter villain to act as her mirror. With Prey 2 all but a foregone conclusion based on the success of Prey, Naru facing an enemy beyond more Predators, namely another hunter like herself, could be an ideal way to follow up her story in Prey.

Prey review: A knife to the heart of the rotting corpse that is the ... (Digit)

We review Prey, the latest film in the Predator franchise. Is it worth your time? Read on to find out.

The Predator in this film is an idiot that doesn’t understand its cloaking tech and is more of a big and dumb brawler without any skill or finesse. The entire thing was written and directed to show that ‘gurrll power’ is all you need to defeat a brutal alien hunter. The Predator in this film is a dumb hulking mess that cannot understand basic physics and logic. Fast forward a few decades and we have a sort of ‘soft reboot’ of the franchise. A sequel was quickly shoved out into the theatres and while it wasn’t a bad film, it just couldn’t capture the magic of its predecessor. A combination of brawn, action and intelligence, the first film was an instant classic.

However, a Predator’s charm is that his dread is amplified in the wild. The most effective hunter in the cosmos, after all, is it. It depicts how a Comanche woman named Naru (Amber Midthunder) utilizes her training, guts, and resourcefulness to outwit this potent hunter, keeping true to the idea of the original Predator movie.

Prey review: A riveting fresh take on an old franchise (OTTplay)

The prequel to the iconic Predator franchise takes the film series to 18th-century America.

The climactic scenes where Naru uses everything in her arsenal to take down the Predator are almost reminiscent of Aloy, the female protagonist from the games, taking down a Thunderjaw. The film also explores themes of colonialism and imperialism. It offers a crisp runtime of one hour and 39 minutes and it is gripping from start to finish. Instead, Naru is depicted as an intelligent young woman who is vulnerable but has the ability to use her strengths to make up for any shortcomings she might have in her fighting ability when compared to her brother Taabe. While the premise and setting of the story are certainly intriguing concepts, it is in the execution where Prey shines. But when the extraterrestrial being called Predator appears in search of Earth’s strongest beast, Naru takes it upon herself to hunt down this dangerous being.

Dan Trachtenberg and Jhane Myers, the makers of Prey, the Predator prequel film talk about reviving the film franchise.

I was very intimidated by those and I wanted to really deliver because the Comanche were fierce with their weapons and I think Dakota really delivers and takes on that Predator in a very exciting way with a weapon that we've seen used plenty in movies. It's an underdog hero's journey of this one character and yet still manages to deliver what we expect a Predator movie to deliver on the kind of action that you see - the clever and excruciating depths of brutality that the Predator is able to inflict with his special set of weaponry. I think I was excited to drill into the things that I felt made the first movie tick. Dan: Well, I think the original was exciting in that "Oh my God, it's sort of like a slasher movie, except it's in this other setting with these other protagonists" and our movie is more focused on telling a David vs Goliath story in this real rivalry. I found it enjoyable to make this type of film just because of the way the characters are written, the way the film is written. Since then, the biggest stride taken in the direction of reviving the film series is the recent prequel film Prey.
