3 दिसंबर 1971 को पाकिस्तान को मुंहतोड़ जवाब देने के बाद भारतीय वायुसेना के फाइटर जेट्स ने अगले दो हफ्तों में देश के पश्चिमी इलाकों में 4 हजार सॉर्टीज लगाए. भारतीय वायुसेना ने पाकिस्तान के 8 एयरबेस पर खतरनाक हमला किया. पश्चिमी सीमा पर वायुसेना ने पाकिस्तान को गूंगा-बहरा और अपंग बना दिया था. पाकिस्तान पायलटों में इतना दम नहीं था कि वो भारतीय वायुसेना और सरकार को झुका सकें. उस समय न्यूजवीक मैगजीन में पाकिस्तान की इस हरकत को लेकर लिखा गया था कि जब भारतीय वायुसेना के जवानों की शिफ्ट बदल रही थी. उसने पाकिस्तान के पूर्वी एयरफील्ड्स यानी बांग्लादेश के तेजगांव और कुर्मीटोला एयरबेस पर हमला किया. पौने छह बजे पाकिस्तान के सरगोधा से विंग कमांडर हकीमुल्ला ने अमृतसर एयरबेस पर हमला किया. क्योंकि यहीं से पाकिस्तान के रफीकी एयरबेस के लिए यहीं से भारतीय वायुसेना के मिग-21 और सुखोई एसयू-7 फाइटर जेट्स ने सुबह उड़ान भरी थी. जिसमें अयूब खान ने कहा कि पूर्वी पाकिस्तान की सुरक्षा पश्चिम के हाथ में है. बस उन्हें भारतीय वायुसेना के एंटी-एयरक्राफ्ट गन और सरफेस टू एयर मिसाइलों के हमले से बचना था. बांग्लादेश की मदद करने के लिए भारत, पाकिस्तान की धज्जियां उड़ा सकता है. बांग्लादेश को पश्चिमी पाकिस्तान से अलग करने के लिए भारत उसकी मदद कर रहा था.
