How did Max Verstappen win second world title at Japanese GP - F1 ... (Sportstar)

There was confusion over whether full points would have been awarded or not for this race since less than 75 per cent of the race was completed.

But initially it was unclear if the full 25 points would be awarded to the race winner since only 50 per cent of the race distance was covered. Verstappen needed to be 112 points ahead of his nearest rival after this race to seal the title in Suzuka. The FIA promptly gave Leclerc a five-second race penalty demoting him behind Perez to third.

Max Verstappen sealed his second Formula 1 world championship amid huge confusion after winning a chaotic, rain-shortened Japanese Grand Prix.

But for the Japanese GP there was a different interpretation of the rules, which state that the reduced points are only applied if a race is suspended "and cannot be resumed". I'm so thankful to everyone who has been contributing to this success." The Dutchman would have been denied the title if Charles Leclerc had come second, but the Ferrari driver's final-lap error saw him given a five-second penalty - for leaving the track and gaining an advantage - that demoted him to third behind the other Red Bull of Sergio Perez.

Verstappen crowned world champion with Japanese GP victory after ... (Formula 1 RSS UK)

Max Verstappen claimed victory in the Japanese Grand Prix, and took the 2022 world title with it, after a penalty for Charles Leclerc at the end of the race ...

I’m very pleased to win here, but also very happy to see all the fans and that they stuck around,” said race winner and world champion Verstappen. Alonso and Ricciardo decided that enough was enough, though, and headed to the pits for intermediates. After the stops, Verstappen led Leclerc by five seconds, with Schumacher in P3 from Perez, Zhou and Ocon. Magnussen had a quiet run to 14th after his early contact with Albon, followed by Alfa Romeo team mates Bottas and Zhou. Incredible, of course! “[As for the title], what can I say? “I’m just very happy that we got to race at the end. However, at 1448 local time, this was suspended and the wait went on. Leclerc was on course to finish second, and to keep the title race alive, but he was penalised for cutting the final chicane on the final lap to keep a charging Perez at bay, with the points difference meaning Verstappen sealed the crown. Verstappen mastered the restart to keep Leclerc at bay, as Vettel and Latifi took the opportunity to pit for intermediate tyres – heading out of their pit boxes side-by-side in an incident that was looked at by the stewards. A lap later, the leaders filed into the pits to swap wets for intermediates, with only Alonso, Ricciardo, Schumacher and Zhou staying out on the extremes – the Alfa Romeo sitting between Verstappen and Leclerc at this point. With just under 50 minutes to run on the race clock, the Safety Car led the field out of the pit lane for a planned rolling start, which was soon carried out and released the pack of cars – all of them this time forced to run wets, rather than having the choice to use intermediates.

Max Verstappen retains F1 title amid chaos and controversy at ... (The Guardian)

Max Verstappen won the Japanese Grand Prix for Red Bull and secured his second Formula One world championship.

These incidents precipitated a terrifying moment for Pierre Gasly who had pitted on the opening lap and was out of sync with the rest of the field, behind the safety car with a tractor was on track attempting to deal with Sainz’s wreckage. Verstappen was consistently almost a second lap faster and closed out with ease, a fitting finale for the now-double world champion. Verstappen, though, was in complete control, his lap times hugely impressive given the conditions, quickly putting a full 12 seconds on Leclerc who was harried to the flag by Pérez and ultimately made the mistake that was crucial. The race opened in the rain and Verstappen made a slow start but clung on bravely to Leclerc around the outside of turn one to hold the lead as he entered the esses. After this tragedy the FIA introduced a slew of rules intended to prevent such thing happening again, including one which prohibited the use of recovery vehicles unless the safety car or a virtual safety car was deployed. He has become only the third driver to have secured the championship with four or more races remaining – Michael Schumacher took it in 2002 with six to go and Nigel Mansell in 1992 with five, while Sebastian Vettel won with four remaining also at the Japanese GP in 2011.

Japanese GP: Verstappen crowned World Champion amidst Suzuka ... (Khel Now)

It wasn't a classic race at Suzuka. The rain once again interrupted big time and there was a full chance for the repeat of Belgian Grand Prix 2021.

Esteban Ocon took a fine fourth for Alpine after some fierce defending against Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes, with Sebastian Vettel recovering from a clash with Fernando Alonso at the initial start to take P6 on his final Suzuka appearance. The race was in danger to be abandoned after an early red flag but it carried on after a long break and with 50 minutes left on the clock. During the red flag situations, Pierre Gasly was encountered by a tractor which was out on the track. He finished P17 to cap off a terrible weekend. From there, Verstappen mastered the switch from wets to intermediates as the track surfaced gradually improved and edged away at the head of the field, eventually crossing the line 27 seconds clear. Consequences could have been worse as he stalled on the track, leaving a Rolex ad poster on the track which caught Gasly.
