पिछले साल सोनी टीवी पर प्रसारित हुए कौन बनेगा करोड़पति शो में अमिताभ बच्चन ने दर्शकों के सामने अपने स्कूल के दिनों का राज भी खोला था। उन्होंने बताया था कि उनको बचपन से ही फिल्में देखने का शौक था। वो अपने दोस्तों के साथ स्कूल समय के बाद रात में कॉलेज से कंबल ओढ़कर फिल्म देखने जाते थे। उन्होंने कहा था कि उनका कॉलेज नैनीताल की पहाड़ी में स्थित था। फिल्मों के शौक के बीच में हमेशा स्कूल का अनुशासन आ जाता था। ऐसे में उन्होंने फिल्में देखने के लिए प्लान बनाया था। वह रात को हॉस्टल से दीवार फांदकर बाहर जाते थे। बाहर जाने के बाद अपने ऊपर एक कंबल ओढ़ लेते थे, ताकि कोई पहचान न सके। उस वक्त नैनीताल में मात्र एक ही सिनेमाघर हुआ करता था। फिल्म खत्म होती थी तो कॉलेज में वापसी के समय फिर से वह कंबल ओढ़ लेते थे। इससे प्रिंसिपल को पता ही नहीं लगता था। अमिताभ ने एक इंटरव्यू में कहा था कि जब वह यहां पढ़ने आए यानी 1956 में, तब उनका सपना अच्छी नौकरी करना था, न कि बॉलीवुड में जाना। मगर थिएटर में वह इतने तल्लीन हुए कि उसी समय उन्होंने बॉलीवुड एक्टर बनना तय कर लिया था। शेरवुड कॉलेज में उस समय इंग्लैंड में पैदा हुई एक्ट्रेस जेनिफर केंडल (Jennifer Kendall) का थिएटर ग्रुप 'पृथ्वी' प्ले सिखाता था। ये ग्रुप हर साल गर्मियों में आकर कॉलेज के मिलम हॉल में ट्रेनिंग देता था। बाद में अमिताभ ने इस बात को माना भी था कि थिएटर ग्रुप पृथ्वी से ही प्रेरित होकर वो थिएटर में आए थे। यहीं से एक्टिंग की ABCD सीखी थी। अमिताभ बच्चन के अभिनय की शुरुआत शेरवुड कॉलेज (Sherwood College Nainital ) से ही हुई थी। 1956 से लेकर 1959 तक तीन शैक्षिक सत्र में कक्षा 9 से 11 की पढ़ाई के दौरान अमिताभ बच्चन ने शेरवुड कॉलेज में कई बार नाटकों में हिस्सा लिया। यहां वह अभिनय में इतने रम गए थे कि स्कूल के 3 एनुअल फंक्शन में से 2 बार उन्हें स्कूल का एक्टिंग में मिलने वाला सर्वश्रेष्ठ पुरष्कार कैंडल कप (बेस्ट एक्टर अवॉर्ड) भी मिला था। अमिताभ ने बिशप्स कैंडल्स और द गवर्नमेंट इंस्पेक्टर में प्रमुख अभिनय किया था। इससे उनकी स्कूल के छात्रों में अच्छी-खासी पहचान बन गई थी।
