As the gynaecology department head Dr Nandini, she is every bit as intimidating and charming as we can hope her to be. Or is it the plot of Badhaai Ho or Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui or even Vicky Donor? The first is a cringefest, laden with jokes that don’t land, stereotypical characters, and some questionable background music that belongs in a 90s film. But despite the jarring nature of the film, it remains watchable (largely) due to the performances of Ayushmann and Shefali Shah. Then, post-interval, the film transforms into a heartwarming coming-of-age drama that has several moments that will leave a lump in your throat.

Doctor G is the kind of film in which the question answers itself. The working-class women who heave themselves into the government hospital where Uday is being trained barely register in a film that signals virtue at all times. Comedy, a time-tested device to sell uncomfortable truths, is the narrative’s vestigial organ, which is also what Uday’s seniors compare him to. At its most basic, Doctor G is an excuse for the fish-out-of-water brand of comedy in which Khurrana excels. Mom (Sheeba Chadha) insists on shoving ladoos into Uday’s mouth at the exact moment when he chomping on a slice of watermelon. After he joins the team of Dr Nandini (Shefali Shah), an upright, fair and stern gynaecologist who runs a class of post-graduates under her in the government hospital she works in, a group of hardworking and fussy women doctors surround Uday, including Dr Fatima (Rakul Preet Singh) engaged to her boyfriend. For the man choking in his own ideas of masculinity and an ego-puncturing romantic failure behind him, this is an insult, a tragedy and a sacrifice.

And very often in the first half we hear cringe-worthy dialogues about various human orifices that are brought up just so that the men in the audience feel squirmy in their seats. Being a film about gynaecologists, the V word is bound to recur in the conversations. We are supposed to take this cheesy act of infidelity as casually as Rakul Preet does.

Ayushmann's Dr Uday is a funny, quirky and confused gynecologist, the lone man in a class full of women. The film is about Dr Uday Gupta, the one male student in the gynaecology department.

Learning to wear a stethoscope naturally, like an extension of themselves, is also a feature of all good doctors. But I wonder what if the gender table was turned and the guy had asked the girl to just be friends because he wants her in his life but ‘just as a friend’? The sequence and the culmination play out as the man here needs to grow up. As for the technicalities, the camera goes soft focus in some scenes early on in the film. But my favourite of the lot is the ever-so-reliable and striking Sheeba Chaddha as Uday’s mother. The girl gang in the gynae department is cast well. The end of it is rewarding and sort of coming-of-age for Uday, like some other moments in the film. Ayushmann must have been the obvious choice to play this role as the film falls in the subgenre, i.e. As for the performances, all the actors are in good form. The lines are said to make a point or preach. The sequence of Uday losing the male touch and learning the doctor touch is smartly written, and a solid Shefali Shah as the HOD of the gynae department teaches that to Uday. By the interval of Doctor G, I realised that the story of this film is not just about a boy becoming a gynaecologist. And credit to the makers for handling this sensitive track the way they did.

The strength of Doctor G springs from the breezy nature of its storytelling, which brims over with moments that alternate between the hilarious and the sensitive. Doctor G is a fun film that addresses issues that matter with all the seriousness that they deserve. It is a man here who needs to lunge at all the support he can garner in order to find his way around in a setting in which he is at the receiving end. It is the women who evebtually help him disavow himself of obsolete ideas about what a man can do and cannot do. If not overflowing with everything that the doctor ordered, Doctor G, directed and co-written by debutante Anubhuti Kashyap, is a cinematic pill that does its job to great effect for the most part.

Starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rakul Preet Singh, this is a film about a hero who is pregnant with possibilities.

(A far-fetched comparison, perhaps, but Uday’s dilemma brings to mind the moral conflict of the 1997 film, Yes Boss). Nandini might sound like a joyless disciplinarian, but she is actually a reality check for both Uday and the film’s viewers. Her presence reflects the influence of a female film-maker (Anubhuti Kashyap), and becomes a constant reminder that men and movie characters like Uday are celebrated too easily, often for things as simple as doing their job and not being awful people. The setting – a ‘campus comedy’ features him as the only male student in the gynecology department – is stagey. If the first half was the movie we’re conditioned to watch, the second reveals the consequences of choosing to change – it’s rarely as simple as succeeding or failing at something. That’s the Khurrana arc – where illumination is treated as more of a narrative contest than a social ideology.

Anubhuti credits it to the lack of female company at a young age, and ‘90s cinema which promulgated that a boy and a girl could never be friends. Fatima is about to be engaged with a boy from her community and Lakshmi is looking for a companion. He only needs to look up the internet to find a number of successful male gynaecologists, but that is out of the syllabus here. Early in the film, we are told that he is not a Kabir Singh-kind of obsessive lover; Uday is much mellower and casual in his sexist outlook, but this doctor also doesn’t understand the idea of consent or the value of friendship between persons of two different genders. A patient can be cured in the hospital, but what about the pathogen of patriarchy that is lurking outside? A young male medical graduate from Bhopal ends up doing his masters graduation in gynaecology, due to a number of reasons that are governed by his social conditioning rather than his understanding of the noble profession.

And the fact that it had only been a few months since she had moved to Chennai, as well as that she was unmarried, added to her woes. Dr Yuvraj was also the only male when he pursued his MD in Obstetrics & Gynaecology from Pramukhswami Medical College in Karamsad, Gujarat. They said, ‘You are a man, why don’t you become a neurosurgeon or cardiologist?’ They also thought that patients would not come to me as I was a man. In the comedy film, Khurrana plays Dr Uday Gupta, who finds himself the only male student at the gynaecology department of a college.

Apparently, the story of a man learning from his mistakes is an idea that only adults should be exposed to, according to the CBFC. Keeping all this in mind, it’s mystifying that Doctor G got an ‘A’ rating from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), especially since the film has no graphic scenes or crude language. Ultimately, the joy of this film is in the relationships that it establishes. With stories like Doctor G, there’s always the fear that the film will be a checklist of political correctness. Uday gets to display some traditional heroism in episodes like the late-night, high-speed race to the hospital, but Doctor G’s shiniest moments are the quiet ones in which Uday realises the error of his ways. Not all the humour in the early parts of Doctor G land, but it does the business of setting the scene well. While Doctor G is the story of the lone, male, gynaecology student and it has its share of clichés, after a long time we’ve got a film with both a good script and good editing. It’s not high enough to get into orthopaedics, but he does manage to get a seat in the gynaecology department at Bhopal Institute of Medical Sciences. She makes it clear to Uday that her department is for dedicated students and Uday is the first with a rank below 500 to have made it in. Nonetheless, the film has a space as there’s no major competition from Bollywood until Ram Setu and Thank God releases on 25th October. On top of that, the biggest hurdle is that the film is rated ‘A’ by censor board and yes, there are some jokes or moments which would make it awkward for a family viewing even if all members are 18+. Ayushmann’s Doctor G is a good one time watch but it doesn’t offers anything special. Yes, the film has some flaws, but more than that, it’s the change of people’s mindset after Covid which might restrict its scope at ticket windows. The promo of the film had all the elements- socially driven concept, light-hearted moments and an emotional touch. It’s true that post the pandemic phase, the audience is in no mood to tolerate the weak films and the verdict usually gets out on the very first day itself.

Dramatic yet controlled, there is a certain purity to her immotive transformation of the character reminiscent of the likes of Meena Kumari and Nutan. She is also the lifeline of Doctor G. This is arguably one of the top-ranking performances of recent times. But the film’s biggest failure is in saddling Shefali Shah with a role that is unforgivably one-note. Ayushmann has, in the last 10 years, travelled the whole gamut of body and bodily functions and attempted to un-taboo them. But the writing is too muddled (Kashyap being aided by Sumit Saxena, Saurabh Bharat and Vishal Wagh is a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth) for that idea to come through with any kind of a fresh treatment. Doctor G is a revision of the Ayushmann Khurrana textbook that we now kind of know by heart. The only freshness comes in through the equation that Uday and Fatima share, which is not romantic. There are perhaps as many male doctors of gynaecology as there are female, give or take a few, even in the small towns.
