Prince movie review: Director Anudeep's brand of comedy is unique and might not be for everyone.
The point is to make you laugh for those few stretches, and maybe it’s a win… If you were to watch the film on OTT, you would have skipped the customary bridges that connect the good stretches, and you would still not miss anything. However, ‘conflict’ is a strong word for a film that doesn’t take itself seriously even for a nanosecond. It is so obvious that the hilarious stretches are connected by a generic thread about a love story between a Tamil guy and a Brit girl. The heroine Jessica (Maria Ryaboshapka) asks the hero Anbu ( [Sivakarthikeyan](https://indianexpress.com/about/sivakarthikeyan/)) to take her to a good vegetable shop. The moment you try to explain Anudeep’s sense of humour, you will end up missing the point.
'Prince', starring Sivakarthikeyan, has a few funny stretches and some great dance moves but nothing more.
And then, there's our protagonist, who actually writes and signs a letter promising his father that he would marry only out of his caste. Maria Riaboshapka’s scenes are passable, and her dance moves in a song show promise, but there’s no meat in the romantic track. The jokes aren't meant to pull someone's leg, as is usually the case. It has two or three funny lines - most of which have anyway been packaged in the trailer - but the irreverent laugh riot that the makers promised in the promotional interviews seems to have gone missing. A British girl is sitting inside a Tamil household, and speaking with who could possibly be her future father-in-law. Prince is a collection of such 'jokes'.
Kollywood actor Sivakarthikeyan's Prince has been creating a good buzz for many days. The bilingual film finally hit the screens today.
A few comedy scenes are enjoyable, especially in the first half and the climax. Music by Thaman, cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa and the production values are neat. Anudeep succeeded in making the film look rich and neat but failed as a writer. Sathyaraj’s performance stands out in the film. Having Sivakarthikeyan as the protagonist, Anudeep should have written a strong story with neat comedy. In general, people have huge expectations for the next film of a director who scores a massive hit like Jathi Ratnalu. This is the immediate film of Sivakarthikeyan after scoring two back-to-back hits – Doctor and Don. But, his father Vishwanath (Sathyaraj) opposes their love because of a strong reason and the villagers decide to ostracise Anand from the village. Sathyaraj as Vishwanath steals the entire show. The bilingual film finally hit the screens today. Why the entire village wanted Anand to leave the place? Anand (Sivakarthikeyan), a school teacher, falls in love with his colleague Jessica (Maria Ryaboshapka), a British girl at first sight.
Prince movie review: Sivakarthikeyan's charm and his chemistry with Sathyaraj elevate this quirky but silly comedy to a fun watch.
He holds the film together with his charming screen presence and his knack of doing comedy is unmatchable. Prince, as the promos promised, ends up as a harmless romantic comedy. The film relies a lot on quirky one-liners and wordplay. When Anbu, a social science teacher, falls in love with his colleague Jessica (British), an English teacher, he hopes that his father would be proud of him to fall in love with someone from a different country altogether. Anudeep’s style of comedy is not everyone’s cup of tea. Tamil hero Sivakarthikeyan's Telugu-Tamil bilingual project, Prince under the direction of Anudeep KV had a theatrical release today.
Though Sivakarthikeyan gave his best and tried to elevate a few scenes with his screen presence, the lack of strong emotions and an engaging screenplay dilutes the mood of the audience. His comic timing and funny one-liners bring an instant smile on the audience face. Story: Anand( Sivakarthikeyan) a school teacher falls for his colleague Jessica ( Maria Riaboshapka) a foreigner at the first sight.
