Covid complications notwithstanding, this should be the biggest DC debut for a non-Batman launch, and yes, I’m counting Joker as Batman-adjacent since Aquaman ($27.7 million Friday/$72 million weekend) in December 2018. Among his previous big-deal theatricals, it's behind Fast Five ($34 million on its way to an $86 million debut), Fast & Furious 6 ($38 million for a $117 million Fri-Mon debut), Furious 7 ($67 million/$147 million) and Fate of the Furious ($46 million/$99 million). which rode rave reviews and strong buzz to a $23 million Friday and $57 million (including sneak previews) debut weekend in early 2019. Black Adam is the first DC/Marvel biggie where the lead actor is bigger than the marquee character since Nicolas Cage’s Ghost Rider in 2007 and before that, Wesley Snipes’ Blade in 1998. Of note, he’s barely in Furious 7 (even if his few scenes were heavily featured in the marketing) while this opening day is bigger than Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw ($23 million/$60 million). But also, man, I love the DC universe. “Establish Black Adam as the most powerful and unstoppable force on this planet. A lightning strike crumbles a wall and a caped figure drifts down in the smoke. “If you only knew how long and the fights to make that happen.” When the day is won, Black Adam crushes the massive throne of Kahndaq where kings once sat and reclaims his ancient mantle as the country’s champion. Black Adam is looking toward a $60 million opening weekend at the box office after delivering Dwayne Johnson's best solo opening day with $26.8M.
The film made $2.4 million on Friday and will cross the $50 million mark domestically by Sunday. Finishing third, the film added another $2.5 million to its domestic tally on its fourth Friday and will shoot past the $80 million mark by Sunday. Black Adam is pacing behind Fast Five ($86 million), Fast & Furious 6 ($117 million), Furious 7 ($147 million), and Fate of the Furious ($99 million), although anything over $61 million will make it Johnson’s biggest non-Fast and Furious opener. The George Clooney-Julia Roberts rom-com had already grossed over $70 million from overseas territories across the last couple of weeks and is looking like a hit for everybody involved. The film is currently tracking to make over $60 million across its first three days, with a real shot at overtaking Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw’s $60.03 million debut haul. The post-credit scene is a show stealer and hints at the return of a popular (most popular, actually) DC character. His limited abilities as an actor are actually well utilised in the film where his dialogue delivery is a reminder of the Terminator. Since it's Johnson, Black Adam is supposed to come out good in the end. As per comic books, the character of Black Adam is a loose cannon, who can go up against the good and bad guys with equal intensity. The characters and their intentions are quickly established and no revelation is left to be introduced later in the film.
