Blurr movie review: Taapsee Pannu's tryst with dark and edgy ... (Hindustan Times)

Blurr Movie review: Taapsee Pannu's first production venture is an exciting and fast-paced thriller-mystery, a genre she looks most comfortable in.

Without being too preachy, Blurr very subtly manages to address mental health issues, societal pressure and the fear of rejection that often push a person to extreme acts. And while there are many characters that we're introduced to throughout the story with much promise, not all are written well enough to live up to the potential. However, the story has too many loose ends and questions that nobody bothers to answer. For most part of the film, I felt like I was watching an extension of Taapsee from Badla, Game Over, Haseen Dillruba, Loop Lapeta and Dobaara. Blurr movie review: Taapsee Pannu thriller is too stretched, too flat (The Indian Express)

Blurr movie review: The atmospherics are fine, but the characters, including the leading lady's who has maximum screen time, come off sketchy.

The idea of losing your eyesight, the thing that afflicted Gayatri, and which appears to be Gautami’s lot now, is scary enough. The official remake of the Spanish language ‘Julia’s Eyes’, directed by Guillem Morales and produced by Guillermo del Toro, has Taapsee Pannu in a double role. And now the devastated Gautami is convinced that there’s someone after her life too.

Blurr Movie Review: Taapsee Pannu's film has nothing working for it (India Today)

The rest of the cast is sadly burdened with forgettable generic characters. Coming to the performances, Taapsee puts her best foot forward and excels in a few inherently intense scenes. The focus then shifts to the protagonist as she tries to unravel the mystery behind her sister's death. The storyline sounds promising on paper, but this counts for nothing as the execution is quite underwhelming. Her twin sister, however, refuses to accept this and decides to investigate the matter on her own. Blurr, starring Taapsee Pannu, fails to work because of the tepid screenplay.

'Blurr' review: A spooky tale of hysterical blindness (Scroll.in)

Taapsee Pannu leads Ajay Bahl's remake of the Spanish film 'Julia's Eyes'.

We request you to support our award-winning journalism by making a financial contribution towards the Scroll Ground Reporting Fund. The remake, written by Ajay Bahl and his co-writer Pawan Sony, makes a few key changes to the source material. In this regard, the film delivers. The amazingly fleet attacker operates in a depopulated corner of a hilly town. Forever knocking things over because of her poor eyesight and overwrought because of Neal’s scepticism, Gayatri does herself no favours by insisting on being independent and mobile. In Ajay Bahl’s Blurr, Pannu plays Gayatri, who has a degenerative disorder that will eventually rob her of her vision.

Vetticad is an award-winning journalist and author of The Adventures of an Intrepid Film Critic. Watch the lovely Gulshan Devaiah in that fleeting second when he glances at a photograph of Gayatri and Gautami. The subliminal messaging of an episode involving blind women is also a confusing contrast to the rest of Blurr. She specialises in the intersection of cinema with feminist and other socio-political concerns. This is one of the hazards of watching horror flicks, so if you are driven by a masochistic desire to be afraid, then don’t spoil it for yourself by asking why when Gayatri does one of the above (I won’t tell you what). It is a measure of the director’s skill that he nevertheless manages to shock by successfully conveying the extent of the gruesomeness. This change complements the film’s observations about seen vs unseen members of society, the ones ignored vs the ones the world is drawn to, and even those that Gayatri herself does not realise she, in a sense, fails to see. Of course, as with all scary movies, characters in this one do things that you want to scream at them for doing because as a viewer it is obvious that horrible things will happen to them if, let’s say hypothetically, they enter that forest / get into that bathtub / open that door / return to that home alone, but they do it anyway. Its gaze on a bitter, once-popular artiste is less clear – she is decidedly unlikeable and is not written to invite empathy. This is matched by the dread he builds up in the run-up to these acts. The latter, also the director, is known best for Blurr is a remake of the acclaimed Spanish film Los ojos de Julia a.k.a.

Blurr Review: Taapsee Pannu Headlines Nifty Crime Drama Without ... (NDTV)

The film never loses sight of its primary purpose - delivering a thriller that makes the most of its resources while staying within its chosen parameters.

Blurr uses its hill town setting in a manner that is far removed from how Mumbai genre movies usually treat the hills and the clouds that cast a shadow on them. It is a solid genre movie that is well worth a watch. The screenplay by Pawan Sony and the director makes it a point not to let in anything that could diminish the film's grip and dilute the intensity of the drama of survival. When the action does occasionally move out into the open, what is visible of the landscape is enveloped in thick mist, sheets of rain, dense floating clouds or just a pall of obscurity. It is a strong enough genre movie, assiduously designed and well-acted, to indicate that she and her company have the right ideas. The local police, in a hurry to close the case, conclude that Gautami died by suicide. The mountains and the winding roads are a physical presence, but they do not loom large over the images. She fleshes out a character with whom you instantly empathise not only because of her obvious state of vulnerability but also owing to her unswerving tenacity and temerity. Blurr is packed with twists and turns that hit home with a fair degree of force. Faced with a scenario that quickly spins out of control, the protagonist stumbles, falls, runs into obstacles, and weaves in and out of dark corners in a struggle to ward off bodily harm. Pass, Article 375) and cinematographer Sudhir Kumar Chaudhary create a grey, subdued palette that approximates the growing dimness within and around the beleaguered central character - she is 'central' in the truest sense of the word, the camera is always on her face, capturing every emotion, every twitch, every sign of alarm. She labours to crack the mystery of the death of her twin sister.

'Blurr' movie review: Taapsee Pannu shines in a taut, gripping ... (The Hindu)

Ajay Bahl's thriller, starring Taapsee Pannu and Gulshan Devaiah, explores the dangers of not being seen and not being able to see.

Gayatri’s progressive vision loss becomes a metaphor for a society that chooses not to see the old and the infirm around it. Abhilash Thapliyal is convincing as the boy fighting the shadows of obscurity and insignificance. Not all the questions are nailed, and not all the gaps are filled with logical explanations, but for the most part, Blurr lives up to its title. Known for looking beyond the obvious and navigating the blurred line between right and wrong, the underrated Bahl, known for B.A. Not for the weak hearts, the psychological thriller, with hues of horror, is dotted with alarming possibilities and the setting is competently exploited by cinematographer Sudhir Chaudhary and production designer Nilesh Wagh. Socially and physically disabled are often invisible in the stories of our films and life.

'Blurr' Ending, Explained: Who Was After Gautami & Gayatri? Is The ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

Indian film "Blurr," written and directed by Ajay Bahl, is an official remake of Spanish thriller film "Julia's Eyes," released in 2010.

And now that he has her replica in the form of Gayatri, he wants to blind her too and spend the rest of his life with her. When Ira urges Gayatri to remove her blindfold and take the key (that Gautami gave to the old man, who then gave it to Gayatri, which was then stolen by Ira and then returned to Gayatri) and use it in the nurse’s house, she realizes that Neil didn’t die by suicide. After some misdirection in the form of Ira and her father (who turns out to be some sleazy guy trying to grope Gayatri), Gayatri learns from Ira that her nurse (who is going by the name of Deepak) is the actual killer. Because during a scene involving Chander and his knife, she requests that he take her to a doctor because the surgery has “gone wrong.” This means that after going blind before Neil’s death, she was admitted to the hospital for her first eye transplant (which came from some random donor, I suppose). The movie ends with Julia becoming blind and remembering how Isaac talked about seeing the universe in her eyes, the camera zooming into her eye and then transitioning into a shot of the galaxy. These suspicions are then taken to their maximum when Gayatri receives Neil’s “suicide note,” in which he admits that he romanced Gautami behind her back to apparently find that sense of love he had lost throughout his relationship with Gayatri. Gayatri lives in the city with her husband, Neil, and works as a researcher in the field of anthropology. By doing so, the movie leads the audience to believe that Neil is the one who was having an affair with Gautami. When Gayatri does get to know about this, she pulls her hand out of Neil’s, and the camera lingers on Neil’s ring finger. However, in “Blurr,” there’s no such scene that explicitly states that Gayatri has undergone a major eye surgery, and that’s why she has to wear a blindfold. But the act of not revealing that Gayatri has undergone surgery makes the scene where she starts to see again feel like an inexplicable miracle (not in a good way), and it kind of ruins the ending too. As a twin, Gayatri senses something is wrong and rushes to Gayatri’s house with her husband, only to find her dead.

Blurr checks out all the boxes of a thriller film. The unpredictability of the plot keeps the guessing game going. By then, the visual tone of the film and the treatment has also synced in and the director then takes us on a ride with sharp twists and turns. His performance adds another layer to the film and lifts the storytelling. As Gayatri, Taapsee manages to capture the paranoia of a partially blind woman who is not only going through the trauma of personal loss but must continue on her path alone to unravel the truth. The story unfolds in the hills of Uttarakhand.

Blurr Movie Review: Disjointed Scenes, Confused Storytelling End ... (koimoi)

Blurr Movie Review: Taapsee Pannu starrer tries to be a thriller so hard that it forgets to add thrills. Read on to know more.

Also, why is the editing of the movie so abrupt? His part is written so abruptly that nothing about it makes any sense to the script after a point. The actor has done way better and needs to get back to that. But the build-up to it dilutes the impact. In this barter, if the investment of the viewer is wasted due to the lethargy of the product, it irks more than a normal film would. There is scope for so much more and you don’t need to have any master sensibilities to see that. Credit where it’s due, the idea of not showing the faces of the people around Taapsee after she loses her eyesight is good and something fresh. But Bahl and his co-writer chose to go the staple way with the word go itself. The investigation leads to some dark alleys and the bad man is a maniac. How does it even serve a purpose to the story if you have highlighted it so visibly? It even opens with a very haunting scene, and then leads to the unfolding. It does not just demand ultimate attention from the maker and the crew involved in creating it, but even the viewer because they have to understand and dissect it.
