Factored into the tale of impending doom is a love story and a family drama that play out parallel to each other. It is hard to say if Salaam Venky will strike a chord with the general public with a real-life story that made an up-and-coming chess star Venkatesh Kolavennu a legal cause celebre about a couple of decades ago. Salaam Venky is certainly not in the same league as Anand as a film about a terminally ill man, but it does have the meat to be a substantial addition to the canon. No matter how many of its passages might appear condensable, if not entirely expendable, the film as a whole makes its point firmly, clearly and with a lot of heart The result is a tale of a bitter personal and legal battle that can keep the audience invested in the way it unfolds and concludes. The film succeeds in pulling back from the brink when, on a couple of occasions, it veers close to courting a hint of excess.

While the movie is shaped and structured to make one cry, it kind of enters the escapist zone even when it is a real-life story. The background music tries to manipulate the viewer to an extent that it tries to force-feed feelings. Revathy is a prolific actor who tries and includes intricate details in her performances. Like there is a cameo by Aamir Khan, much of it cannot be really written about considering it would be a spoiler, but nothing about it lands too well to hit hard when you see his purpose in the larger scheme of things. The cameos in Salaam Venky are worth the while. A toned down for good performance, she plays Sujata with all the honesty and motherly instincts. A mother and her anguish about not being able to save the son she fought the world for. The subject that someone is already counting their last days and in them demands the death of dignity and peace, there is already immense grief and pain enough to move one even with a summary. Kajol has a love relationship with lens and there is no way she can look bad in any frame. Euthanasia, the will to die, is a topic that is the trickiest mine for filmmakers who dare to tell a balanced story about grief. So the task at hand here for a filmmaker is not to make the audience weep, but also to console them to understand the things lying between the lines. Salaam Venky equipped by director Revathy, with screenplay writer Sameer Arora and additional screenplay and dialogues by Kausar Munir, is based on an achingly moving true story of a boy who tried to fulfill his dying wish of donating his organs to people in need because he was about to die any day.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali had previously touched upon the same in the Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai-starrer Guzaarish but the emotional tonality of the film was lost to its aesthetic. Some of the dialogues come off corny instead of being heartfelt and that undercuts the already heavily saturated tone a lot. A topic like this and the cast we’re presented with would’ve benefited from a more restrained and mature screenplay. By the time the audience meets Venky, even his doctor (Rajeev Khandelwal) has declared that his chances of survival are slim; now all that remains is Venky’s final wish and Sujata’s reluctance to fulfill it.
