Jake Sully, as chief of the Omaticaya, takes his responsibilities with all the seriousness that they merit. Both these defining elements are central to the fierce battle that Sully, his wife Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and their children wage. Cameron adds a heady dose of tribalism in ‘Avatar 2’s’ mix of saving the environment and the rapaciousness of humans, leading us to ask questions about identity and belonging. In between moving everything along briskly, is a touching thread belonging to the younger Na’vi boy and his relationship with a gentle giant of the deep, called the Tulkun: in the way the two support each other against a formidable foe, the boy comes of age, and the creature, cast outside his clan, finds redemption. The importance of the family unit is also emphasised over and over, with a bit of teenage angst thrown in, safely unsexualised, because Cameron is clearly making a family first movie for families all over the world. ‘Avatar 2’ is just stunning in the parts it skims along the water, dives and rolls around joyously, keeping up with the incredible creatures who live in the deep: the Na’vi family learns that the way of the water is to become one with it. As one of the Metkayina people (Kate Winslett has a small part as the Metkayina chief ‘s wife, who takes her time to embrace the outsiders) tells the Na’vi family, as they begin finding their sea-legs: the way of the water has no beginning and no end, water connects everything. Apart from the big themes of environmentalism and colonisation, ‘Avatar’ also sounded the gong for how each of us are connected to the other, whether we live on the land, or the sea.

The remaining 2 hours and 45 minutes of this 3.15-hour movie take place on the ocean. The visual effects in even a Telugu film like "RRR" were cutting edge. When "Avatar" was released in 2009, viewers were blown away by James Cameron's vision of the planet Pandora. The CGI is completely out of this world. It's common knowledge that when James Cameron directs a film, the technicians in charge of the special effects, cinematography, and action sequences all perform at the highest possible level. In particular, the actors who play Lo'ak and Neteyam are the show-stoppers.

But then I would have had to watch it again to pen this review, and that would be . Ultimately, Avatar: The Way Of Water is just not all that good or cerebral or exciting. I would have loved it if this were an adventure movie, with Jake and his family heading out into the wide, wild world and facing struggles that had nothing to do with the human colonizers. But the bad guys are coming with their guns and their bombs and their bombs and their guns. But even if that is how kids in the US talk in 2022—it isn’t, not to this degree—it makes no sense on an alien planet. And the Navi—a crude analog for the indigenous people of our own world—remain the Noble Savage trope they were in the last film, only less interesting now. It’s a retread of the first film. I didn’t see Avatar: The Way Of Water on an IMAX 3D screen because the nearest IMAX to where I live is at the Grand Canyon and they don’t show this kind of movie on that screen (even if they did it’s being renovated until next Spring). It’s arrogant and self-indulgent and I think the novelty that made that okay in the first film has worn off for audiences, or at least it has for me. Some of the fights—while too long—were exciting and action-packed and had cool special effects. - That’s the best way I can describe Way Of Water.
