The outsiders of world football… the Asian football story (The Times of India Blog)

This article must start with the most alarming yet obvious statistic – The FIFA World Cup has always been won by a team from Europe or South America.

There’s hope and the dream of an Asian team lifting the coveted World Cup trophy will continue to play in the minds of fans. While the argument that the European teams are more competitive and keeps the World cup far more balanced isn’t backed with hard data, it also poses a counter argument as to how will Asian teams rise up to the challenge if they don’t get as many opportunities to play with inter-continental opponents. But it’s important that we have answers as to why and how the quality of Asian football is unable to match the standards of their European and South American or even African counterparts. The 2022 World Cup started on a promising note for Asian teams with six teams from the Asian Football Confederation(AFC) making it to the World Cup, courtesy Qatar’s hosting rights. At least one team from North America and Africa have reached the knockout stages of the tournament since 1986 while Asian teams have fizzled out in the group stages in four out of nine world cups since 1986. The reality gets darker as in the entire history of the World Cup, only two countries from outside these continents have ever reached the semi-finals – USA in the beginning years i.e in 1930 and the valiant hosts South Korea in 2002.

World Cup fever grips football-crazy Ibrahim Hyderi (The Express Tribune)

KARACHI: “I feel watching Morocco reach the semi-finals was like seeing ourselves win, I think no other Muslim country has done what they did and that made us ...

“There is a lot of passion for football in the community and we can see a clear divide, and a great one too. Ali is now a member of the departmental side for Army, and he is certainly an inspiration for the footballers in Ibrahim Hyderi. I see these children and even the older people who have been coming to the screenings, they spend two to four hours here despite the cold weather, and it does become a bit of an escape for all from the tough lives where they don’t know when the next meal will be, or how harsh the factory conditions have been, and in all of this football has been a glue to keep them hanging on. “It is easier to get the flags of Brazil, Argentina, France and other countries, but there were no flags of But apart from the World Cup, Khan revealed that for the first time Baloch Mujahid Stadium will have a separate enclosure for women to participate in the sport and that is giving hope to many in Karachi's football community as girls from Korangi and other areas can also use the venue for the women’s sport in the future besides the youth of Ibrahim Hyderi. For now, the youth is the focus of the screenings who work at the factories in the surrounding industrial areas for 12 to 14 hours a day on meagre wages and the fishermen community that must make ends meet in the harshest of the conditions at the sea, particularly in the wintry weather of December.
