Day after Greatest World Cup final: Qatar empties, leaving behind ... (The Indian Express)

Thousands hung in the vicinity of the Lusail Stadium, to soak in the atmosphere, to fully absorb the slice of history they had seen.

For a month they were in a dream-land; on the tiny peninsula were the eyes of the world, the colour of the globe. Some would stay as emblems of the days Qatar hosted the World Cup. And the days and nights after Sunday will be long and boring. The metro, the lifeblood and rendezvous for socialising of the tourists, would have as much space to play football. To the tedium of everyday life. You could hear most languages and dialects in the world, see a variety of different costumes, tap your feet to the most indigenous of percussion instruments. Qatar is crawling back to normalcy, to the days before the World Cup. It was not what they might have imagined Qatar to be, but the Qatar World Cup was fun, thrilling and beyond the wildest imagination. When the hangover of the World Cup ends, it is such moments that would be missed as Qatar reacquaints itself with a life after the World Cup. In spare time, he would visit the national museum, library, and soak in the old-world grandeur for Souq Waqif and Msheireb. I can only imagine how excited the Argentina fans in Qatar are at the moment and best of luck to them – their supporters deserve to see Lionel Messi lift the World Cup. And this could be the greatest football match I would ever see.

And Argentina weren’t the only side to rely on an older generation of footballers who may be playing in their last World Cup tournament. His two goals - one from the penalty spot and one in extra time - brought his total in World Cup football to 13, with seven in this tournament alone. But these were just some of the young stars who have proved that the future of football will remain bright when the likes of Ronaldo and Messi finally hang up their boots. But Kylian Mbappe, who became only the second player in history to score three goals in the title-deciding match of a World Cup, now holds that record after France succumbed on penalties to Argentina in Lusail. Bellingham at just 19 is being courted by the likes of Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain. Olympics.com brings you five things we learned from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Qatar 2022: A truly global World Cup (India Today)

Teams from either Europe or South America have now won the previous 22 World Cups.

Since 1986, at least one team from North America and Africa has advanced to the knockout stages of the tournament, while Asian teams have failed to advance beyond the group stage in four of the nine World Cups since 1986. Since 1930, and across various formats, only three teams from outside Europe and South America have reached the semi-finals. FIFA confirmed that the Qatar World Cup set a record as teams from all continents have advanced to the round of 16 for the first time ever. That meant a team from Africa had a one-eighth chance of winning the tournament for the first time. And Lionel Messi led Argentina to a historic victory over the defending champions France in the final to end his World Cup drought in front of 88,000 fans in the stadium and many more at home. This year, different teams from different parts of the world made spirited efforts in their quest to conquer football's most coveted trophy.

Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and a once-in-a-generation World Cup ... (The National)

The rollercoaster battle between Argentina and France in Qatar produced one of the all-time great football matches.

The most polished, monied club teams will always have a slickness in their work that a national coach envies. “I’ll have a meeting in the new year,” said Deschamps of whether he stays on in a job he has done for more than a decade. In international football, you cannot reach for the chequebook and simply buy the best-fit player to suit a tactical plan. Last summer in Rio de Janeiro, a Di Maria goal earned the Argentina of Messi their only Copa America title. Mbappe and his other game-changers, the substitutes used on the night, will all be still in their 20s when the next World Cup begins. Deschamps appreciates, even in defeat, that managing a gifted national team gives him a level of passionate support no other job can. But France had also had a wretched lead-in to their defence of the title, injuries to Karim Benzema, Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante, Lucas Hernandez and Christopher Nkunku testing the reactive instincts of Deschamps and presenting him with fresh, stimulating challenges. Precisely those elements, and those two players, won Argentina the Olympic gold medal in 2008 in Beijing. The unorthodox timing of the event turned out not to be a rude interruption. “I love football,” said the hero of a fabulous game and the most watchable player of the 21st century. Didier Deschamps, France’s losing manager will also be welcome to patrol the touchlines of North America at the next World Cup if the boss of the French Football Federation, Noel le Graet, has his wish. Messi, who will turn 39 soon after the 2026 World Cup begins, has a place “reserved” for him there if he chooses, promised Scaloni.

Messi wins the World Cup: G.O.A.T debate, settled? (The Indian Express)

As Lionel Messi finally lifts the ultimate prize in football, his case to be the greatest of all time (G.O.A.T) becomes the strongest it ever has been.

His trophy cabinet is now complete, and with it is his case to be the greatest to ever play the game. The fact that Messi has kept his magic alive for such a long period is the ultimate testament to his greatness. Crucially, he always rose to the occasion, with his exploits in the 1986 World Cup widely considered to be the greatest individual performance in a football tournament. However, knee injuries at the turn of the century robbed him of some of his early magic, even though he played at the top level till 2007. In the 1998 World Cup final, Zidane was the man of the match, scoring two headed goals when heading was probably the last skill he was renowned for. Yet the brilliance of Zidane lies in the fact that he was a complete footballer. While undoubtedly one of the greatest to ever play the game, the FIFA World Cup trophy-sized hole in his cabinet was often cited as the biggest gap in his career. From Pep Guardiola’s incomparable Barcelona team of the late 2000s and early 2010s to the World Cup winning Spanish team of 2010, Cruyff’s legacy has touched modern football unlike any other player. If Pele was a symbol for the purity of the beautiful game, Maradona was its fallen angel. Possibly the best paid athlete of his era (1956-77), he averaged just about a goal a game for his entire career, scoring a whopping 757 goals in 831 official games. At the same time, many modern fans raise questions about the context he played in – specifically, the level of the competition he faced. [Messi wins the biggest prize](https://indianexpress.com/article/sports/football/for-argentina-a-win-more-than-football-messi-8331632/) that eluded him for his whole career, for many fans, he also settles the G.O.A.T (greatest of all time) debate, once and for all.

Tuesday had been declared a national holiday following the team’s thrilling penalty shootout victory over France in Qatar on Sunday. Messi and Argentina's World Cup wait ends with dramatic final win ... (Sportstar)

Argentina beat France on penalties to win its third FIFA World Cup, winning Qatar 2022 at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday.

Messi looked lost in his thoughts as he walked to the box, but he caressed his shot in, not feeling the pressure that was coursing through all of us. Mbappe converted despite Emiliano Martinez jumping the right way, and the France striker, the star of the show in Russia four years ago, soon got the French president on his feet when he equalised with a powerful shot to the bottom-right. Lloris rushed out but Di Maria was too experienced to be troubled by that and lifted it over the French skipper and went celebrating with the fans by the left corner flag. The French for a while looked like a three-day-old helium balloon with no gas left to keep it afloat and Argentina was all too eager to deflate it further. Messi slid to the turf, and his mates were soon on top and the crowd, here, was no longer sitting tight. Here again, much like in every Argentina game, the stands were blue-and-white, his followers waiting in anticipation for the glory that Messi and the world have yearned for from June 16, 2006, when he made his World Cup debut against Serbia and Montenegro.

FIFA World Cup 2022: Argentina beat France 4-2 on penalties to lift ... (The Hindu BusinessLine)

Lionel Messi became the first man in World Cup history to score goals in the group stage, Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and final.

The drama was not over, however, as Mbappe hammered a shot against the arm of Montiel to produce another penalty in the 117th minute, which he calmly dispatched. Messi took the penalty, calmly steering the ball low beyond Hugo Lloris and then Di Maria took centre stage again after 36 minutes when he finished off one of the best goals to grace a final. “We came back from the brink, that’s what gives us so many regrets,” said France coach Didier Deschamps. Nahuel Molina cushioned a first-time clearance to Alexis Mac Allister, who instantly played the ball to Messi. France, the only team to have scored three goals in a final and lost, have tasted defeat in three of five shootouts, two of those losses coming in finals. Argentina had looked to be cruising to a one-sided victory after Messi’s penalty and a brilliant goal by Angel Di Maria in the first half put them in total control but Mbappe converted an 80th-minute penalty and volleyed in an equaliser a minute later to take the game to extra time.
