In a sense, even the pace of the film contributes to the feeling of watching a predictable exorcism movie. The characters in the film are Christian and this doesn’t do much in the way of images with the same upside down crosses, the bottle of holy water and the pages of the Bible getting reintroduced as important visual motifs. With no neighbours to come for help and no option to take the elevator down to safety, a ghost in the bedroom right next to you is a lot of more suffocating than you can imagine. So just think of how much harder it gets when the youngest member of the family ‘brings’ in an unwanted guest. The lockdown also solves the problem with any sort of a horror film set in an apartment building. In a sense, even how we perceive video calls has changed so much because of the pandemic that it adds a second layer to a scary film that is about a scary time.

I felt this strongly because Connect is directed by filmmaker Ashwin Saravanan, who has previously delivered two of the finest thriller films, Maya (2015) and Game Over (2019). That is exactly why the audience tends to feel disconnected from Connect. In those moments, Connect does remind us of The Exorcist and The Conjuring. And hence, it also makes us wonder if that song from Netrikann, Nayan's previous movie, served as an inspiration for Connect. The film swiftly switches between fear and faith. There is an effort to find out the name of the Ghost and we naturally expect some flashback to the Ghost but that is not explored. As the film is shot only in two rooms, the camerawork needed to be top notch and it is. On the whole, Nayanthara’s Connect is a poorly made horror thriller that has nothing new to showcase. Barring a few thrills, there is nothing new that the film showcases. The climax is good and Nayanthara helps the audience to sit through. An evil spirit entering the body of a girl, and a priest coming to help her, have been showcased right from her childhood onwards. Satyaraj is neat but he hams a lot in the latter part of the film. There is nothing great for her to showcase her talent but still, the film becomes watchable only because of her. The climax part has been handled well and the scenes where the spirit leaves the body are shown in a good way. But so many scenes of panic are cut half way through irritating the audience. Though the film happens in just two rooms, it has been lit up well and creates a tense mood for the audience. She tries to talk to the spirit of her dad taking the help of an external force. Whose help does she take is the story of the film.

Connect, starring Nayanthara in the lead role, is technically sound, but the uninspired plot drags the film down drastically.

டெக்னிக்கலாக படம் சிறப்பானதாக இருந்தாலும், கதை என்ற விஷயத்தில் ஏமாற்றமே.

லாக்டௌன் சினிமா என்பதால் பெரும்பாலும் வீடியோ காலில் மட்டுமே கதாபாத்திரங்கள் உரையாடுகின்றன. அது லாக்டௌன் காலத்தில் நிகழ்கிறது என்பது மட்டுமே இதன் 'மாத்தியோசி' ஐடியா. வீடியோ காலில் அவ்வப்போது தோன்றும் நயன்தாராவின் அப்பா சத்யராஜ் மட்டுமே அவர்களுக்கான ஒரே ஆறுதல். தோராயமாகப் படத்தை அணுகினால், பேய் பிடித்துவிடுகிறது, அதைப் போராடி விரட்டுகிறார்கள் என்பது மட்டுமே ஒற்றை வரி கதையாக மிஞ்சுகிறது. அதிலிருந்து விலகி, சீரியஸாக ஹாரர் ஜானரை மட்டுமே கருத்தில்கொண்டு வரும் படங்கள், தொழில்நுட்ப ரீதியாகவும் சிறப்பானதாக அமைந்துவிட்டால், ஹாரர் விரும்பிகளுக்கு நல்லதொரு ட்ரீட்தான். கொரோனா லாக்டௌன் அறிவிக்கப்பட, அதனால் சிதைகிறது நயன்தாராவின் குடும்பம்.
