Erik ten Hag on state of Man Utd ahead of domestic football return ... (Eurosport.com)

Erik ten Hag has admitted Manchester United are “far away” from where they need to be as he prepares for the return of domestic football.

"I always say, satisfaction makes you lazy. "Manchester United was not in the circumstances that you would expect of them. Goalkeeper David de Gea is still in negotiations with the club. “I am happy with the way the players perform and the fact they play as a team with the right spirit and the right mentality," the Dutchman said. Ten Hag says he is “happy” with the performance of his players but urged they need to maintain a high level. "I think now we’re in the right direction but we’re far away from where we need to be."

I had a routine [and it wasn't] 100 per cent, but you see that the principles are there and I am quite happy with the game we played." Aaron, we missed him in the first 14 games of the Premier League and we need numbers in the squad but not only numbers, they have to play well and they have to perform. [You have to] keep going and keep believing that the ball is going to get there, but it is an investment. But with the passing capabilities of players like Eriksen, Casemiro and Bruno, we have the players that can get the ball there. We had a lot of high regains, we had a lot of transitional moments. It's a difficult to get the press on [them] but I think we did.

How on earth will Man Utd replace Ronaldo and his one Premier ... (Football365.com)

Ronaldo started four Premier League games this season so obviously Marcus Rashford was sending a 'message' with his ninth goal of the campaign. Yawn.

We thought that ‘message’ might be to Erik ten Hag or Gareth Southgate but no, Manchester United’s top scorer ‘sent a message to Cristiano Ronaldo’, an ex-Manchester United striker who started four Premier League games this season. At some point we knew that Marcus Rashford scoring his ninth goal of the season would be framed as some kind of ‘message’. And we remembered that a list of leading Manchester United goalscorers for the season read – before the 2-0 win over Burnley – Rashford (8), Martial (4), Fernandes, Antony, Sancho, Ronaldo (3). ‘Life without Cristiano Ronaldo has started well for Manchester United. ‘Cristiano Ronaldo left the club by mutual agreement last month. We remembered that Manchester United had scored six goals in two games before the World Cup break.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has taken in just two appearances for Manchester United this season, but Erik ten Hag insists the defender has a future at the club.

He’s had some good years with United, but from the start of this season he had a lot of illnesses and injuries, and so was running behind. But this is great and so I’m happy with his performance. Wan-Bissaka put in a decent display during a 2-0 victory over the Clarets and, despite seeing a possible return to Crystal Palace speculated on, Ten Hag insists there are no plans at Old Trafford to consider parting with a useful rotation option.

[told Football Insider.](https://www.footballinsider247.com/solskjaer-is-exposing-wan-bissaka-and-this-is-poor-management-after-man-united-latest-pundit/) “It puts him in a position where you have to be better on the ball than defending one-on-one. There was interest from the London outfit back in the summer about a potential Wan-Bissaka return. Danny Mills, a former England right-back, echoed that and claimed the system exposed his flaws. That meant their defenders were more involved in the attack, which didn't play to Wan-Bissaka's strengths.
