Cirkus review: A dull Rohit Shetty movie, a duller Ranveer Singh ... (Film Companion)

In its attempts to be comic, Cirkus always seems to choose the worst possible option in terms of narrative chaos.

Singh is bland – almost disinterested – as Roy and Roy; so bland that it’s tough to tell one twin from the other. The only reason a circus exists in the film is to milk a stale electrocution gag – Ooty Roy is a human conductor but it’s the Bangalore Roy who feels the shock. The problem with Cirkus is that it always seems to choose the worst and shortest possible option in terms of narrative chaos. Mishra is the light, but he shines brighter at the end of a dark tunnel. Maybe the electricity of Rohit Shetty characters is so natural to him that he’s stopped trying. The energy levels, the passion for low-brow entertainment, and the commitment to campy excesses are almost identical. Of all the terms I’ve used to describe Rohit Shetty movies over the years, dull is not one of them. Which is a remarkable feat, because the nonsensical premise – loosely, very very loosely, based on Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors – is right down Shetty’s Manmohan-Desai-for-toddlers alley. Apologies in advance for the sounds this line might make: One Roy-Joy own a circus in Ooty, while the other Roy-Joy are businessmen from Bangalore. Replace my mother with Sanjay Mishra – which is not a sentence I ever imagined I’d write – and you’ll get the gist. Mishra is so gloriously unhinged that the prospect of his character not being on screen often sank my heart. The Mishra-less portions made me stare at the corners of every frame longingly.

Cirkus Review: Angoor Khatte Hain! (Rediffmail)

Cirkus is boring and puerile, notes Sukanya Verma. Rohit Shetty poaches on Vishal Bhardwaj territory to make his version of the Bard's The Comedy of Errors.

Adoptive parents of the new-born boys name both the lookalike sets after Roy and Joy. Joy 1 and 2 are written as siblings but treated as sidekicks to Roy 1 and 2. Sanjay Mishra, Siddhartha Jadhav and Johnny Lever are committed to giving their five-year-old fans a good time even in the absence of fresh humour. Speaking of love, Deepika Padukone in one item song shows more spunk than Pooja Hedge and Jacqueline Fernandez do in the entire duration of the movie. Trouble begins when he follows Roy 2 and Joy 2 to Ooty where a troika of thieves (led by Siddhartha Jadhav), their gangster idol (Johnny Lever), a gun-toting aunt (Sulbha Arya), a snake-tattooed cabbie (Vrajesh Hirjee), a Urdu poem babbling jewellery designer (Brijendra Kala) and a former dacoit-turned-hotel owner (Mukesh Tiwari) add to the ruckus. Let's just call them Roy 1 and Joy 1 of Ooty and Roy 2 and Joy 2 of Bangalore, played by Ranveer Singh and Varun Sharma respectively. Roy 2 runs the family business and likes to read pulp novels. Photosensitive viewers beware as the screen is sprayed in the gaudiest hues of candy and kitsch. Vintage cars, trains and trams, brown brick hotels and staff in The Grand Budapest Hotel uniforms and promenades and paths strewn in flowers of every conceivable colour, the optical overload is to be seen to be believed. Before going full throttle with its faux 1960s vibe, Cirkus time travels all the way back to mid-40s, when products of the Jamnadas orphanage -- an establishment familiar to the founding members of the Golmaal franchise -- Roy (Murali Sharma) and Joy (Uday Tikekar) -- swap one of each twins as an experiment to prove parvarish is mightier than khoon. The Comedy of Errors is tailor-made for mix-ups and run-ins transpiring within a close-knit space, which was made all the more amusing by Gulzar's rhythmic wit and eclectic cast led by Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma. Set in the 1960s, Cirkus ensures technology does not play spoilsport and gives the film-maker ample scope to fixate on retro overkill.

[Youtube](https://www.youtube.com/user/Koimoi4Bollywood) [Google News](https://news.google.com/s/CBIwo7yAqUE) Apart from these 2, the whole bunch of comedians is stuffed because they boast of a lot of funny things in their filmography & Cirkus won’t be one of them. The year is 1942, the city is Rohit Shetty’s Bangalore & it starts with Roy Jamnadas of Jamnadas Orphanage (from Golmaal) experimenting with interchanging two sets of identical twins just to prove parvarish (upbringing) > khoon (blood relation). The whole story revolves around what will happen when both these twin pairs will face each other (Spoiler alert: Nothing interesting happens). Also, wow, the parents name all 4 kids Roy (Ranveer Singh), and Joy (Varun Sharma) with a respect to the founders of the orphanage.

'Cirkus' Review: A Circus With Great Performers but No Attractions (The Quint)

Rohit Shetty's latest film 'Cirkus', starring Ranveer Singh, Jacqueline Fernandez, and Pooja Hegde, has a great comic cast but little else to support them.

Cirkus is a film resting on the shoulders of its star cast without giving them much to work with. Ranveer Singh and Varun Sharma, for their part, do manage to distinguish their two roles in the film, but there's nothing else to write home about. To its credit, the track ‘Current Laga Re’ featuring a magnificent cameo by Deepika Padukone has definite earworm potential. A wonderful and able cast is woefully underutilised. Mukesh Tiwari and Ashwini Kalsekar who are a laugh riot on screen together (as evidenced by Shetty’s Golmaal series) barely get their dues here. Ranveer Singh-starrer Cirkus takes inspiration from yet another iconic film in the same vein – Angoor (1982).

Cirkus Movie Review: Ranveer Singh, Rohit Shetty's Wishy-Washy ... (Jagran English)

Cirkus Movie Review: Ranveer Singh and Rohit Shetty bring back the 60's era with Cirkus, but how did their attempt fare? Read the review here.

Even with a mega-budget, a riot of colours and a stellar supporting cast, the sheer lack of a strong narrative makes Cirkus fall flat on its face. Ranveer Singh in the dual role of Roy 1 and Roy 2 fails to leave an impact. The ultimate climax seems to be so far away into the film that the delay in the confusion clearance act does not work in the favour of the film and the bland comedy turns into more of a snooze fest than a riot of comedy. The film begins with Roy and Joy 1 staying happily with their family in Ooty when during an accident, they realize Roy has special powers of not feeling any current even when exposed to a live wire. The first of Cirkus involves the introduction of all its cast, and thankfully so. While Ooty Roy feels he has the superpower of not feeling any current whenever he performs with a live wire at the circus, the electric shocks are felt by the Bangalore Roy simultaneously.

Cirkus Movie Review: Ranveer Singh's film suffers from power ... (India Today)

Ranveer Singh stars in double role in Rohit Shetty's Cirkus. The film is now out in the theatres.

In an age where reels and other social platforms have gags and 20-second stand-up acts, the challenge is to not only stay relevant, but also reinvent your craft. Not because it’s set in the 60’s, but the formula is cliched. The writing with the punches and rhymes works in a few scenes. Varun Sharma’s timing with Ranveer feels natural and the actor delivers punches even in the most subtle scenes. A plot which relies on the goof up of a twins mix up is not new. For any slapstick to work, the body language of the actor has to be so free that you go along with his fall, his punch and the slip on the peel of a banana.

Cirkus movie reactions: Soon after the Rohit Shetty directorial Cirkus hit theatres today, critics and moviegoers slammed the movie on Twitter.

The Rohit Shetty directorial stars Ranveer Singh, Pooja Hegde, Jacqueline Fernandez, Johnny Lever, Siddhartha Jadhav, Ashwini Kalsekar, and Sanjay Mishra in lead roles. When producers only have confidence releasing large canvas nonsense and not decent stories, this is bound to happen. Angoor itself was based on William Shakespeare’s play The Comedy of Errors. [#Cirkus]reviews say the film is trash.. Furthermore, cinephile Ronak Kamat called out the producers and said they cannot blame the audience for not making a beeline in theatres when they only have the confidence to release commercial nonsense. YouTuber Yogi Baba Productions said that the movie was over in every aspect from comedy to color and the plot was confusing. The reviews are not surprising. The user tweeted, “Why was Cirkus not boycotted? A user wrote, “As a Rohit Shetty movie, I honestly thought Cirkus will be so much fun but it felt like it was a Sajid Khan movie not Rohit Shetty. The three-and-a-half-minute trailer felt unbearable. Movie enthusiasts said it felt like a Sajid Khan film instead and called it Shetty’s worst-ever movie. Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh also gave Cirkus a two-star rating and called the movie outdated.

Cirkus movie review: Rohit Shetty's latest film might just be his worst work yet. Starring Ranveer Singh in double role, it fails to employ even one of him ...

The kind of laughter audiences are used to watching in a Rohit Shetty film, I can barely recall one scene in Cirkus that could evoke a genuine laugh. I would leave you with that thought and let this sink in as it may take a while. Varun, who's aced the art of comedy and is super with his comic timing, fails to add any value to this period comedy. Then there's a local thief, Momo (Siddhartha Jadhav - I loved him in Simmba and Sooryavanshi as sub-Inspector Santosh Tawade), but Cirkus reduces him to such a poorly caricaturish character with weird hairdo who's only making funny faces. Sanjay Mishra as Bindu's motormouth and irritatingly fashionable father might look like the most promising one out of the bunch but he ends up being a headache with that screeching accent. 'The electric man' as he is fondly called in Ooty for his ability to bear any voltage of current, we never feel that current in his performance. He is trying to be funny and it's evident but his jokes, whatever little there are, just don't land. Ranveer, in a somewhat restrained act, is doing whatever he has been briefed to do but the impact is totally missing. With so much happening and everyone trying so hard, comedy is nowhere to be seen or felt. Or should he be apologising to his own fans for making such an outdated and unfunny film in the first place. Cut to post interval, when the chaos starts to set in with everyone trying to make sense of things, it gets even more unfunny. Should Rohit Shetty be apologising to Ranveer Singh fans for wasting an actor of his calibre in this mindless, dumb comedy?

A faded copy of Gulzar's 'Angoor', Rohit Shetty's comedy entertainer starring Ranveer Singh, is doubly disappointing.

nurture experiment, is the voice of the writer who breaks the fourth wall to share the curiosity of the audience at the implausibility of the situation. It is a script that is perhaps more suited for laidback situational humour, perked up by music and performances, than Rohit Shetty’s style of overwrought slapstick. Those who know Angoor would recall that it is about two sets of identical twins separated at birth. Murali Sharma, the doctor who changes the twins at the time of their birth, to further his dated nature vs. The film promises many amperes of comic current but it hardly passes through its body of writing. Rohit Shetty has been making his comedy of errors for a long time, but this time, the director who introduced us to a new Golmaal gets inspired by Shakespeare’s epic play and dusts off Gulzar’s Angoor (1982) to create a faded copy that is absolutely dull and listless.

Cirkus is not the first Hindi film to be inspired from William Shakespeare’s play The Comedy of Errors, but it is unarguably the worst. And whenever he does, he dances like a hero of the 1970s (the film is set in that period), with his tongue out, as popular songs of the time play in the background. Cirkus is not the first Hindi film to be inspired by William Shakespeare’s play The Comedy of Errors, but it is unarguably the worst. Her writing is given as much importance in the film as the circus that her husband runs, which is less than perfunctory. At no point in the film can you tell his two Roys apart, such is the homogeneity of his approach to playing the double role. Deven Verma plays his role in Angoor with such effortless ease and ingenuine brilliance, that I couldn’t stop marveling at the finesse of his craft for days after I first watched the classic.

Cirkus Review: Rohit Shetty, Ranveer Singh Deliver the Worst Film ... (Film Companion)

In 2022, Bollywood did not save the best for last.

With Cirkus, Shetty and Singh have delivered the worst film of the year. For instance, Shetty begins the film in 1942, setting it in a fabricated past that is as neat and fake as Noddy’s Toyland. The only possible silver lining of Cirkus is that by the end of it, you’ve got to feel better about yourself because chances are, your 2022 is less of a flop than what Shetty and Singh have delivered. Two of the Roy-Joys are twins who are separated at birth and it takes 28 years for their paths to cross, much to the confusion of some petty thieves, a jeweller and a taxi driver (among others). The film has three sets of men named Roy and Joy — one set runs an orphanage; another runs a circus; the last one just runs around. Despite a cast made up of some of Indian cinema’s funniest comic actors including Johnny Lever, Tiku Talsania, [Sanjay Mishra](https://filmcompanion.in/tag/sanjay-mishra), Brijendra Kala and Varun Sharma, Cirkus is a tragedy — for the audience that will never get back the 138 minutes it gave this film; and for Ranveer Singh, who showed more of his livewire chemistry in than he does with this double role, despite one of the characters being named “Electric Man”.

The performer-protagonist is endowed with a special skill; his twin in Bangalore suffers the consequences of the act that the latter performs in the circus arena. The result is a great fall for both Rohit Shetty and Ranveer Singh. The tightrope it walks is precariously weak and frayed. One duo goes to a couple in Bangalore, the other ends up in a home in Ooty. Electricity connects two twins separated at birth - one can withstand high-voltage shocks, the other is assailed by waves of electric current that he has no control over. We do laugh, but only at the sheer vacuity that is on show. Here, too, he does pretty much the same, but the two roles that he is stuck with are awfully insipid. Yunus Sajawal's screenplay runs logic to the ground in search of laughs. The lead actor tries hard - way too hard - and the effort shows. The film has one foot planted firmly in the past, which by itself is not such a bad thing. And the acting all around is consistently substandard. It is full of garbage.
