Australian pacer Green gave fans something to cheer about by triggering a late-order collapse of five wickets for 10 runs.

Warne reached the milestone of 700 wickets on his home ground in Melbourne in December 2006. Starc briefly left the field for treatment on a sore middle finger. Play was stopped briefly at 3.50pm Monday, prompting applause from fans and players. Apart from cheering Green off the field, fans also paid tribute Monday to Test cricket's second-leading wicket-taker Shane Warne, who died aged 52 in March 2022. Asked about last week's life-changing IPL auction, Green added: "It probably still hasn't sunk in now. Choosing to bowl first, Australia was on top shortly after lunch with South Africa struggling at 67-5 before Kyle Verreynne (52) and Marco Jansen (59) added 112 for the sixth wicket.

Australia v South Africa: second Test, day two – live (The Guardian)

Over-by-over report: The Boxing Day Test continues at the MCG. Join our writers for updates from Melbourne.

63rd over: Australia 231-2 (Warner 135, Smith 60) Jansen’s brief burst in the crazy heat is ended by the recall of Ngidi. 59th over: Australia 221-2 (Warner 131, Smith 54) Jansen is running in and hitting the bat hard but there’s not much doing out there any more with an old ball on a flat track under a hot sun. 62nd over: Australia 228-2 (Warner 134, Smith 58) Maharaj is rattling through his work like a kid stuffing pennies into one of those end-of-the-pier machines that they turned into the TV gameshow Tipping Point. 67th over: Australia 253-2 (Warner 144, Smith 73) Ngidi begins the 67th over with a delivery so short and wide Warner does well to reach it, let alone guide it through gully for four. 65th over: Australia 243-2 (Warner 138, Smith 69) Is Dean Elgar taking the p155? 72nd over: Australia 295-2 (Warner 174, Smith 84) An exhausted-looking Warner has entered T20 mode, battling fatigue by battering Maharaj for six over cow corner. “I’m not up to the statsguru challenge (and I think that might be quite a long list),” he emails, “but I note that at Headingley 2019 Marnus topped England’s first innings score twice and still ended up on the losing side. 76th over: Australia 319-3 (Warner 195, Head 2) Maharaj continues into the 23rd over of his spell, only now venturing around the wicket to the left-handed Warner. 75th over: Australia 316-3 (Warner 193, Head 1) Nortje deserves a better top-six, and a captain who trusts him with the new ball and important spells. 73rd over: Australia 298-2 (Warner 177, Smith 84) Nortje is thrown the ball for the first time since tea – bafflingly, he’s sent down only nine overs today before this spell – and he immediately hurries up Warner, jagging one into his midriff then beating an attempted pull for pace. 77th over: Australia 329-3 (Warner 200, Head 7) Of course, after that wicket-taking over Nortje is whipped out of the attack. Warner drops to his knees, removes his helmet, and pumps his bat to the sky while a primal scream pours from the depths of his lungs.

Warner and Steve Smith put on a 239-run stand for the third wicket before Smith was caught in the gully for 85 off the bowling of paceman Anrich Nortje. Short of runs and without a century in nearly three years, a tiring Warner slogged his way to his third double-hundred from 254 balls before succumbing to cramps and limping off the Melbourne Cricket Ground field with the aid of a trainer. An emotional and exhausted David Warner retired hurt after a majestic 200 as Australia dominated day two of the second Test on Tuesday and South Africa wilted in a Melbourne furnace.

Warner's 100th Test double century puts South Africa to the sword ... (ESPNcricinfo.com)

Anrich Nortje bowled express pace but Australia were dominant although Cameron Green also retired hurt.

He seemed to barely have the energy to keep going but the motivation of a double ton kept him at the crease until he was able to reach for a wide Ngidi delivery and it flew off the edge to the boundary. Mitchell Starc injured his left middle-finger while fielding on the first day and will bowl only if required while Green also retired hurt which could leave Australia with only Pat Cummins, Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon to close out the match. As he searched for swing, Travis Head flicked him over square leg for six and then four and raced to a run-a-ball 48. He became the second batter to score a double hundred in his 100th Test after Joe Root in a display of extreme determination, strong strokeplay and incredible fitness. They scored 83 runs in 11 overs in the post tea session - and 155 in 28 in total - as they ripped into Ngidi and Rabada. Warner dropped to his haunches and raised both arms in a double salute but he struggled to get back up. Kyle Verreynne made good ground to his left but could not hold on before Warner inside edged Ngidi past the stumps. From his opening runs on the second day - a square cut off Kagiso Rabada's first ball - to his final runs when an edge flew wide of slip and brought up his 200, Warner took the fight to South Africa. [Anrich Nortje](http://www.espncricinfo.com/player/anrich-nortje-481979)was the most impressive of an energy-sapped pack and kept his pace above 150kph consistently. In a minute less than six hours at the crease, Warner ran 63 singles, 14 twos, seven threes and three fours, in addition to the 16 fours and two sixes he hit. A 239-run partnership with [Steven Smith](http://www.espncricinfo.com/player/steven-smith-267192), who brought up 1,000 runs at the MCG A scoring rate of 4.3 runs per over in the day, which peaked at 5.54 in the final session, in temperatures that touched 40 degrees.

AUS vs SA Live Score, Australia vs South Africa 2022 2nd Test, Day ... (News18)

David Warner smashed a stunning century while playing in his 100th Test for Australia. The milestone came for him after a lean patch.

Smith was Smith has also cemented his place on the pitch now and is looking forward to strengthen Australia’s lead. So far in the day, it’s been just Warner’s show as he has impressed with big shots and singles as well. Soon after, Warner survived a scare and somehow managed to get a boundary on a square cut on Rabada’s first ball. Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje were expensive so far, while Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen bowled more fuller lengths but none of this looked threatening for Warner and Steve Smith. However, on Tuesday morning in Melbourne, Warner looked in a very different form as he batted with more intensity and aggression. The milestone came for him after a lean patch.
