But with the two new arrivals of Casemiro and Eriksen, Manchester United’s fans have seen their fortunes changes. As every Manchester United fan will know, their midfield has been deprived of quality and reliability for the best part of a decade. Just days after the end of the 2022 World Cup, a smirk spread across Erik ten Hag's face as he was asked about the quality of Cody Gakpo.

If Manchester United are to spend big in the transfer market in the not-so-distant future, it will surely be on a world-class striker who can lead the line and find the back of the net. “We are always in the market but it has to match the sporting criteria but also the financial criteria and we will do what we can to bring that player in that we need,” he said before addressing Liverpool’s capture of Gakpo. Ultimately, though, Gakpo completed a transfer to Liverpool instead, leaving United unsatisfied in their pursuit of the Dutch attacker.

Story Behind The Shot: Goal-scoring moments (Manchester United)

Ash Donelon, United photographer, continues to reflect on his favourite images from the season so far.

“However, when I saw him sprint in the opposite direction, my heart sank as my view was obscured by a line of stewards, TV camera operators, and the frame of the goal. Ash says: “Photographing a football match means having to adapt to whatever happens on the pitch. “When Scott McTominay scored in the 93rd minute I wanted to get a shot of him celebrating, however so did the TV Steadicam operator, and he raced in front of my lens. “Fast-forward a few months to the final Europa League group-stage match in San Sebastian, and I was able to get a shot of the two players together, celebrating Alejandro’s first senior goal for the Reds. The downside is that people have to walk in front of my lens to get past, so there’s a constant stream of substitutes warming up, camera operators, and stewards to work around. At Old Trafford, working in the North East and North West corners is great because I’m behind the advertising boards, meaning any stewards have to walk behind me to get past, so they don’t block my view.
