Noble intentions and good work from the lead cast almost compensate for the flaws in this emotional drama.
A major portion of Sembi happens inside a bus named Anbu (Love) and after a particular point, the bus takes a detour and roams around directionlessly. I also liked Ashwin Kumar’s portrayal of the nameless saviour, and the inherent charm he adds to the role. Before we can digest the heaviness of this scene, we have Thambi Ramaiah ‘comically’ kicking the groin of a person, pledging to ruin his fertility. Sembi might probably be the nth film to feature a rape survivor as one of its protagonists this year, but it stands out by focussing enough on the laws and the system. This is brought out through the conversations that happen on the bus that Veerayi boards. However, we keep rooting for the protagonists in Sembi as their nobility never falters even in the face of crushing cruelties.
Sembi Review - Watchable Emotional DramaAshwin RamSembi is an emotional drama starring Kovai Sarala in the female front, Ashwin Kumar plays an importa.
Convincing story that manages to create an impact despite the familiarity, delivered with a decent screenplay that has its moments. The little girl is the central character, she expresses well especially while showcasing fear and anxiety. Dialogues could have been more powerful for the situations to provide a better impact and to tighten the attention of the viewers. The screenplay is engaging to an extent, yet manages to create a little amount of tension about the conclusion. Sembi, an innocent 10-year-old girl is brutally raped by a gang of youngsters. The film is directed by Prabhu Solomon.
Helmed by Prabhu Solomon, 'Sembi' revolves around the lives of Veerathaayi (Kovai Sarala) and her 10-year-old granddaughter Sembi (Nila).
The other people in the bus, including the character played by Thambi Ramiah, are slotted under the duality of ‘good’ and ‘bad’, thus making them superficial. Later in the film, when Veerathayi and Sembi are on a bus, a nameless ‘hero’ played by Ashwin helps the duo overcome hurdles. Gory visuals of the survivor covered in a pool of blood and blood soaked gloves, dehumanises the survivor. Nevertheless, Prabhu Solomon hits a nerve with this story of Veerathaayi (Sarala), an elderly woman who harvests honey and makes a livelihood by selling forest-based produce, and her 10-year-old granddaughter Sembi (Nila), who live on a hilltop in Kodaikanal. So much so that when a goon is sent to follow the people in the bus later in the film and when it slides downhill, he dubs the line: “Aiya Anba palathula thaliyachu” (I have pushed love), which comes across as out of place. Visuals of a bus tumbling and falling downhill is accompanied by a dramatic background score, which is then followed by a narration where the bus is personified and introduces itself as ‘Anbu’ (love).
The sincerity with which the story is approached deserves mention, but the film falters a bit in the latter half which stops it from becoming a compelling ...
The production values, too, goes for a toss in the latter half, which is quite contrast to the making style in the first half. The movie touches upon a sensitive topic, and handles various pertinent issues in an organic manner through conversations between passengers in a bus where most of the latter half unfolds. Ashwin Kumar puts up a notable performance as the young lawyer who sets out to help the protagonist. The primary positive aspect of the film is the setting which Prabu Solomon has created. An enraged Ammuchi loses her cool when the cop asks her to withdraw the case. Story: A grandmother and her 10-year-old granddaughter, who belong to a hill tribe in Kodaikanal, go through numerous hardships after the latter gets raped by three youngsters, who hail from politically affluent families.
Lets hope Kovai Sarala to get more performance oriented films in future like Sembi. She is one such actress who needs to be celebrated like Manorama.
Thank you Prabhu Solomon for being a pioneer in bringing a different Kovai Sarala to the audience. The shocking bus accident scene in the climax scene was realistic. To witness Kowvi Sarala's diverse performance and to join Prabhu Solomon's nature journey, definitely go to the cinema and watch this film. Kovai Sarala's performance as Sembi's grandmother is the foundation of the film. Manorama's nuances in making the audience emotional is reflecting in Kovai Sarala's perfmoance throughout the film. But whether such a thing could happen in a bus seemed a bit artificial. Ashwin should have given a more refined performance as the lawyer. Meanwhile, one of the fellow passengers in the bus, a lawyer (Ashwin) helps them; Did they finally get justice for their atrocities? His efforts in making the audience believable tribal girl fight was excellent. In that way, Sembi is also an Agmark Prabhu Solomon's film. Sembi is a movie directed by Prabhu Solomon and starring Kovai Sarala. Prabhu Salomon established himself as an attention-grabbing director by directing films like Maina, Kumki and Kayal in his own style.
Prabu Solomon is a director who always likes to explore the hilly and greener sides of the state, and he has been doing it consistently in all his films.
The film also lacks the emotional connect that is required, because it has all its scenes overdone in the first half until the story moves into the bus. Story wise, there is lots to like in Sembi, but the approach that Prabu Solomon takes is one that lacks proper sensibilities and has no clear intent on what is going on. Prabu Solomon is a director who always likes to explore the hilly and greener sides of the state, and he has been doing it consistently in all his films.
Sembi Tamil Movie directed by Prabhu Solomon is released in theatres today. The movie has come up with a good social message that society needs.
Regarding the negatives, the Sembi movie song didn't connect like other movies by Prabhu Solomon. And moreover, there are a few logical errors in the film. Sembi Tamil Movie directed by Prabhu Solomon is released in theatres today. Ashwin Kumar and Thambi Ramaiah, who play the lead roles, have done their part well. The screenplay is well made, and all the characters have done justice to their job. Only after going there did she learn about the rape that had happened to her granddaughter.
