Labuschagne smashed Keshav Maharaj around the ground and raced past his fifty. Cummins earlier completed a perfect home summer with the toss, calling it correctly in five out of five tests and putting his much-changed team in to bat on a pitch that offered turn for at the end of the first session. Opener Usman Khawaja was 51 not out and Marnus Labuschagne was on 73 at the Sydney Cricket Ground after home captain Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bat.

LIVE: SA rocked by shock review; 'astounding' tactics roasted amid 'curious' light call.

David Warner went on the attack instantly, but perished for 10 runs off 11 balls after slashing at an Anrich Nortje delivery outside off stump, which he edged to first slip. “They’re predatory,” he said. Earlier, Khawaja was given out lbw as he tried to reverse sweep Simon Harmer with the first ball he faced after lunch. Maharaj hasn’t looked like getting a wicket and he’s still bowling.” I thought Harmer looked good. “Live it looks okay, that catch. I thought front-on it probably looked out, but side-on there was enough doubt there. “They sweated on South Africa getting it wrong, and the moment they got their length wrong they pounced and hit it for four.” “I don’t understand the tactic. They often do live ... “I thought Harmer looked the most likely to take a wicket. Kerry O’Keeffe said it was a “curious thing” for Eglar to decline bringing on his spinners.

Australia v South Africa: third Test, day one – live (The Guardian)

Over-by-over report: South Africa are playing for pride as Australia go for a clean sweep at the SCG. Join Jonathan Howcroft for updates.

28th over: Australia 68-1 (Khawaja 25, Labuschagne 30) Last ball of the session, and Labuschagne soaks up most of it before leaving Khawaja one ball to face. 23rd over: Australia 60-1 (Khawaja 21, Labuschagne 26) Impulsive from Labuschagne but it works. Drives a couple of runs from the last ball of the over. 27th over: Australia 67-1 (Khawaja 25, Labuschagne 29) Harmer gets the edge! Labuschagne picks up three runs on the cut shot to raise a 50 partnership. 32nd over: Australia 83-1 (Khawaja 31, Labuschagne 39) Better lines from Maharaj when Labuschagne comes back on strike, bringing the stumps into play. 38th over: Australia 124-1 (Khawaja 45, Labuschagne 66) Jansen back on, immediately squaring up Khawaja but again the edge goes to ground and between slip and gully for four. 33rd over: Australia 89-1 (Khawaja 36, Labuschagne 40) A milestone of 4000 career runs for Khawaja as he drives Harmer through cover for four. Finally Labuschagne takes a risk, reaching well outside off stump to reach the ball where it pitches and sweep hard across the line to deep midwicket. Short but fast and on line, leaping at the collarbone, and Labuschagne leans back out of the way but has the ball skim his chest and the grille of his helmet. 35th over: Australia 102-1 (Khawaja 36, Labuschagne 53) A bowling change, pace returns with Rabada. Based on the past couple of hours I’d be surprised if there’s any more play before the close, but cricket being cricket (and we know all about that today) we’ll be made to wait until nigh-on 7pm on the off-chance.

Along with Harmer, who replaced Lungi Ngidi, South Africa named batter Heinrich Klaasen in place of Theunis de Bruyn who has returned home for the birth of his first child. It only furthered Labuschagne's reputation as a rather charmed batter but he had played imperiously before that contentious incident with five boundaries in 12 balls to go from 40 to 61. After bowling well before lunch, Harmer trapped Khawaja lbw with the second delivery of the second session only for the decision to be reversed when replays showed the ball hit the glove first.

Renshaw was feeling unwell and returned a positive rapid antigen on the morning of the third and final Test against South Africa.

Hence, Renshaw is allowed to keep playing if he feels fit but if he doesn’t, and his positive COVID test is confirmed with a PCR test then he can be replaced by backup batter Marcus Harris, or Peter Handscomb, who has been listed on Australia’s team sheet as a sub fielder. “Australian batter Matthew Renshaw reported feeling unwell shortly before play in the third Test match against South Africa in Sydney and was separated from the squad. Both tests brutally exposed South Africa’s brittle batting lineup, with the Proteas only managing a top score of 204 across its four innings. Heavy rain then fell at the venue leading to a near three-hour stoppage. Labuschagne was even more fortunate when he edged a low catch to Harmer at first slip off Marco Jansen when on 70. When play finally resumed just four more overs were bowled before play was again victim to poor light. Khawaja survived an lbw appeal from Simon Harmer with the second ball after lunch. The day could have been far brighter for South Africa had the television umpire agreed with its on-field colleagues with two close calls going against the tourists in an eventful middle session.

Australia ended the day at 147/2. The former Test expert explained how this kind of situation affects the teams playing as well as the spectators coming to watch the game. The match was supposed to resume at 3:45 pm and players from both sides were padded up for taking the field. While speaking on Fox Sports, Mark Waugh, another Aussie legend and Steve’s brother, mentioned the use of the “pink ball” that has already been recognised by cricket’s governing body. Lots of unhappy spectators who can’t understand the rationale and reason for no play.” He asked for a modification in the long-lasting rules as most stadiums have enough infrastructure to let the play carry on. Popular gadgets including laptop, tablet and mobile specifications, features, prices, comparison. LIVE: Skull's priceless 'Jagger's groin' gag amid cricket's ugly issue ... (Fox Sports)

The hosts are 2-148 with Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith at the crease. Just 10 minutes of play was completed on day two before players were taken from the field ...

That brought to the crease the Covid-positive Matthew Renshaw, who had spent the day on the sidelines, exposed to the weather and isolated from his teammates. Smith and Khawaja put on a partnership of 209 runs to start the day with the Proteas helpless to find some assistance from the Sydney wicket. It means Australia likely won’t have three full days of cricket left to achieve a result, and a whitewash over the Proteas. Nonetheless, the smile will be hard to wipe from the face of Khawaja, who scored his third-consecutive Test century in the city where he grew up. Khawaja continued on with the job, surging past his greatest Test score of 174, and then towards a double century with Travis Head in support. The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts an 80 per cent chance of between four and 15 millimetres of rain for Sydney on day three. Head took just 58 balls to reach 70 in what was a trademark, explosive display with the bat that saw Australia racing towards a declaration. It now leaves just three days of cricket for Australia to build a big enough lead and claim 20 South African wickets to finish the summer with five wins from five matches. The rain was seemingly the only thing that could stop Australia in Sydney, with South Africa mustering just two wickets across 84 overs on day two. Head takes his strike-rate up to a run-a-ball by flaying Jansen through the covers then mistiming a straight slog that loops safely wide of mid-on. Khawaja nudges three down the leg-side inviting Head back on strike, from where he deposits a six back over the bowler’s head. Dosen't have the power to get to the boundary unfortunately. Anything short and he pulled effortlessly, as he picked up a valuable fifty to frustrate the hosts in the first session. I'm sure we will have a bit of a drink in the dressing room with the guys and cap what I guess has been a good summer. Stump-to-stump bowling, reverse swing and the new ball may swing and then the role of spinners (in India). It's tough to say (whether this has been the best Test team he's been part of for Australia), we are in a very good place and I don't want to say anyone is better than anyone else, it's not fair. I would have loved to get a double ton to my name, but this is what cricket is about. (On today's performance)We tried our best but the South Africans held on with their tail end, they have always been difficult to knock over and we didn’t get there but we’ll take the draw anyway. If results go our way and we win a couple of games, that’ll put us in good stead to get to the final. Fortunately, this rain induced draw keeps them in the hunt for the WTC final, albeit with a lot of permutations needing to happen, and they'd want to avenge this 2-0 series loss with a 2-0 win against the Windies. (On Anrich Nortje's pace) Credit to Anrich, definitely the last time I have to face him, that’s great. The message to the group yesterday was to fight it out on day five. Renshaw, in his first test since 2018, was separated from the remainder of his teammates and moved into another changing room at the SCG. Another strong Australian batting effort put them on track for a clean sweep of the series with victory to secure a position in the World Test Championship final in June. He also passed 1000 Test runs at the SCG as he struck his fourth ton on his home ground. To avoid a series whitewash, South Africa might need Sydney's temperamental weather to further intervene. It would have particularly satisfied Smith, who in 20 previous innings against South Africa averaged 41.67 - nearly 20 below his career mark. After captain Pat Cummins won a crucial toss and elected to bat on a dry surface, Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja built a strong platform with a century ...

He has kept a struggling South Africa buoyant after Australia threatened to grab an early stranglehold of the contest. Labuschagne and Khawaja had built a strong platform with a 135-run partnership after the early loss of opener David Warner for 10. It only furthered Labuschagne's reputation as a rather charmed batter but he had played imperiously before that contentious incident with five boundaries in 12 balls to go from 40 to 61. Labuschagne fell for 79 on what turned out to be the final delivery of the day's play. There was a delay of more than two hours due to bad light before five overs were squeezed in late in the day and Nortje capitalised with a cracking delivery to remove Labuschagne.
