Vikings Valhalla Season 2 Ending Explained (Screen Rant)

Vikings: Valhalla season 2 was full of twists and turns and big reveals, and here's what happened to each main character at the end of this season.

Harald now has a new love interest in Elena, and as he doesn’t know where Jomsborg is, he can’t return to Freydis to raise their son together, and the Emperor of Rome owes him a favor. However, Freydis learned that most of the pagans that were brought there were being exploited in the forest and weren’t allowed to enter the temple nor be trained as shieldmaidens and warriors, and they lived in horrible conditions. Due to Godwin and Gytha’s marriage, Emma won’t be able to get rid of Godwin, and she will surely continue to keep a close eye on him as she now knows not only what his true plan is but also how far he’s willing to go to get it without getting his hands dirty. This was the first clue to Godwin being the mastermind behind Emma’s assassination attempt, and it was the core of Godwin’s plan, as all this led to Canute making up for Aelfwynn’s death by arranging Godwin's marriage to Gytha, which gives Godwin direct pass into the royal family, thus making it possible for his son to be king one day. Harald couldn’t think of a prize at the moment but told the Emperor he would think about it, while the Emperor told him that a man like him would be of great service to him, and gave him one of his rings. However, by the time she and her guard got to the Bear, he was dead, and she took a ring that was on his neck. Godwin used the Bear to plan the Queen’s death, and she gave Gytha (Canute’s niece and now Godwin’s wife) the Bear’s ring as a wedding present, asking her to wear it at all times, this as a constant reminder to Godwin that Emma found out about his plan and to show him that the Bear is now dead. At the beginning of Vikings: Valhalla season 2, Godwin was engaged to one of Emma’s handmaidens, Aelfwynn (Maria Guiver), to whom he confided that he wanted his future son to be king. Harold succeeded Edward the Confessor and became King of England in 1066, but he was overthrown and killed in the Norman Conquest. [season 1 left Kattegat destroyed](https://screenrant.com/vikings-valhalla-ending-explained-characters-future-setup-meaning/) and at the mercy of King Sweyn Forkbeard (Søren Pilmark) and his fleet, Leif unleashed his inner berserker, and Freydis and Harald ran away from Kattegat, Vikings: Valhalla season 2 catches up with them as Kattegat adapts to a new reign and the pagans try to find a new safe place after their homes and the Uppsala temple were destroyed by Christian berserkers. After Freydis left with Jorundr (Stanislav Callas) to Jomsborg, Leif and Harald traveled to Nóvgorod to ask Harald’s uncle, Yaroslav the Wise (Marcin Dorociński), for help to form an army against Olaf. Set over 100 years after the events of the main series, Vikings: Valhalla tells the stories of siblings Leif Erikson and Freydis Eiriksdottir, Norwegian prince Harald Sigurdsson and his half-brother Olaf Haraldsson (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson), and Queen Emma of Normandy.

The fight continues in Vikings: Valhalla, Season 2, the actors behind Leif, Freydís, and Harald say.

And we know that they were the last sort of real pagan read out of the old beliefs. "I think with the guidance of Harald, and the brotherhood that he has with Harald, there's certainly a partnership that really helps him track his way forward in terms of finding his purpose in life again. "We do know that the Jomsvikings existed. And now he's exiled and he's going to start from zero, and fend for himself," Suter says. Sam Corlett says that the release of grief and rage has freed his character to move forward. [Vikings: Valhalla](https://www.syfy.com/syfy-wire/topic/vikings) left Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett), his sister, Freydís Eiríksdóttir (Frida Gustavsson), and Prince Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter) in shock after the tragic fall of Kattegat at the hands of Olaf's forces.

Often, it feels as though Leif’s primary job in season 2 is to sort of be dragged along in Harald’s seemingly unstoppable wake, but Corlett does yeoman’s work in making his character’s interior journey one that is as rich with meaning as the group’s physical one. Life as a fugitive generally suits him and his expansive, adventurous spirit, and when the opportunity presents itself for him to ferry an important item from his uncle to the Emperor of Constantinople, he grasps it with open arms (and enthusiastic plans for how the journey will help his ultimate goal of claiming Norway’s throne). Freydis’s story is somewhat more isolated as she attempts to make a new place for herself among the people of Jomsborg, who essentially view her as a sort of mythic figure sent to them by the gods themselves. Here, the world of the series expands to encompass continents, from the snowy steppes of Kievan Rus to the lands of the Pecheneg tribes in central Asia, and even the gates of Constantinople itself. On their journey east, Suter and Corlett are given the chance to explore Leif and Harald’s dynamic in new and interesting ways and their bro-y road trip vibe is more charming than it has any right to be. As for Harald and Lief, they turn eastward and set out for the city of Novgorod in the Kievan Rus, with hopes of getting King Yaroslav to support his nephew’s claim to the crown of Norway against Olaf.

'Vikings: Valhalla' Season 2: Ending, Explained: Was Olaf Able To ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

The war of religion that had made the foundations of the Viking empire hollow from within gathered pace in Season 2 of "Vikings: Valhalla.

Jorundr led a part of the army to the sentinels and told Olaf to take his fleet of ships and attack from the harbor. Even though Olaf had died, with Svein already being called the King of Norway, it could be possible that Harald would still have to fight for his rights. In his last few moments, Olaf took solace in the fact that he would be called a martyr by the world for having given his life fighting for his religion, but Freydis broke his imaginary bubble and told him that she would make sure that nobody survived to tell that narrative to the world. Before leaving Novgorod, a priest had given him his blessings, and Olaf was once again assured that whatever he was doing was righteous. If we come to see, Olaf was a zealot who was driven by ethnic animosities, and he believed that by removing the ‘scourge’ from the earth, he would be fulfilling his duty as a good Christian. Godwin wanted his son to be the king one day, and now, after marrying Gytha, who felt indebted to be the wife of such an honorable man, he had a genuine chance of fulfilling his dream. But that was not the entire truth, and Harald had no clue about the secrets that were going to be revealed to him in Constantinople. Olaf announced a bounty on the head of his brother in the hope that somebody would bring in some vital intel that would lead him to Harald and Freydis. Emma was being told by Godwin time and again that his informers had told him that her life was in danger. She came to know that the assassin who had tried to kill her was Aelfwynn’s brother, though she said that Earl Godwin didn’t know anything about it. Godwin was able to catch the perpetrator, and he tortured him to the extent that nobody had imagined. The war of religion that had made the foundations of the Viking empire hollow from within gathered pace in Season 2 of “Vikings: Valhalla.” We had witnessed how Harald and Freydis had tried to make the people understand that there was no end to such animosity and that one day, it would burn everything to the ground, but the people were blinded.

Vikings: Valhalla Season 2 Review - it feels like a middle season (Ready Steady Cut)

We recap the Netflix series Vikings: Valhalla Season 2, which does not contains significant spoilers or major plot points.

While Vikings: Valhalla Season 2 is building a base, there’s plenty of credit attributed to the costume department and the cast for embracing the Viking-ness (and any other groups of people represented in the series). Being the middle is often a conversation brought to trilogies in films, but there is an argument to be made that Valhalla has a similar situation. [Frida Gustavsson](https://readysteadycut.com/person/Frida-Gustavsson/)) embarks on her own journey in Season 2, venturing to faraway lands to explore her spiritual and religious prophecy. Fans that love the Vikings action may feel disappointed in Season 2 – that’s not to say there are no battles, but Vikings: Valhalla enjoys world-building first, blood and gore second. Usually, bloating a series comes with a compromise, but the second series does not feel burdened by its storytelling at all. [Netflix](https://readysteadycut.com/category/streaming-service/netflix/) and marketed as a sequel, many were wondering how the story could continue to move forward after such success.

Why Vikings: Valhalla Season 2 Is Actually a Road Trip Show (Den of Geek)

Creator Jeb Stuart talks about taking Vikings: Valhalla out of its comfort zone (literally) in season 2.

We had so many great moments in season one, and we had to find those same kinds of moments on the road, and I think we’ve done it.” This is, in its way, what Valhalla itself does in its second season, showing us different sides of the Viking story even as it stays true to the series’ characters and larger themes. For Stuart, it makes perfect sense that a Viking like Lief would be drawn to a scholar like Mariam, who understands so much about everything from the movements of the stars and how they can be used in navigation to mathematics and languages. “One of the incredible things about the 11th century is that women in that culture, coming out of Baghdad, had the ability to be these scholars. In season 2, Valhalla sees its trio of main characters head off on separate adventures that literally span continents as the show does its best to depict the immense influence that Viking culture had on much of the known world—both during the 11th century and for hundreds of years afterward. Does it hold up in the Rus as well as it holds up in Scandinavia?”

She knows that he wants his son to be the king one day and that even her knowing the fact wouldn’t stop him. Godwin always blamed the English empire for the fate of his family, and it is quite possible that a seed of vengeance was sown in his initial years. Under the cloak of nobility and selflessness, he was hiding his evil desires. The Bear, who is introduced in the second season of “Vikings: Valhalla,” took care of a young Godwin and made sure that he was able to survive after his parent’s demise. Even though she didn’t have any evidence to corroborate her beliefs, she knew that Godwin was not the well-wisher of the regime that he pretended to be. The English Empire was just like the tree that trusted the axe, as it was beyond their imagination that the person whom they saw as the kingmaker held a grudge so huge that it had the potential to destroy the empire. It was such an impressive sleight of hand that the nobles didn’t even realize that Edmund was killed right in front of their eyes. Harald could never understand why Godwin had done so, and later, when he came back to conquer England under the leadership of King Canute, he asked him the same question. Godwin had lived his childhood in fear and shame, but it wasn’t enough to make him stop dreaming of the day when he would get back what was rightfully his. The guards had caught Harald at the dock, and Godwin arrived at the scene and allowed him to escape. So, let’s find out if anybody got a whiff of his deceitful intentions or if he was able to accomplish what he set out for. A proof of his foresight and his long-term agendas could be ascertained from what he had done when King Aethelred had ordered to burn down Danelaw.

The Real Life Harekr & Jorundr From Vikings Valhalla Explained (Screen Rant)

Vikings: Valhalla season 2 introduced Jomsborg's Harekr and Jorundr, but are they based on real-life people or are they fictional characters?

Vikings: Valhalla’s Jorundr has a bit more things in common with his real-life counterpart than Harekr, as both Jorundrs were great warriors, but the real one had nothing to do with Jomsborg. There’s no evidence of a Jomsviking leader named Harekr, but it’s believed that Vikings: Valhalla’s Harekr was based on Hårek of Tjøtta, a Norwegian farmer and local chieftain. Although Vikings: Valhalla, just like its predecessor, [Vikings](https://screenrant.com/tag/vikings/), is based on historical events, people, places, and more, it’s not always historically accurate, and in some cases, the show has taken names from real-life people and given them a completely new story, while other characters are a combination of different people.

Harald served the Byzantine Emporer for several years, and most of the riches he made were sent to Yaroslav the Wise who acted as a safe keeper of his fortune. In the process, Harald became extremely wealthy, funding his aims to return to Norway and claim his right as its king. How Much of 'Vikings: Valhalla' is True? (Collider.com)

Were Freydís, Leif, and Harald Real People? vikings valhalla season 2 Sam Corlett Frida Gustavsson Leo Suter. Our three main protagonists of ...

The translation of the lyrics is the following: [the battle of The London Bridge in Episode 4](https://collider.com/vikings-valhalla-sam-corlett-leo-suter-interview-season-2/). Harald was 15 when he and his brother fought against the Danes loyal to Canute (Bradley Freegard) in the battle of Stiklestad in 1030, which resulted in the death of Olaf. Canute wasn’t the first Viking King of England, as said in the show, but his father, Sweyn Forkbeard, was (during one winter). As of now, many historians agree to say that this was most likely a response to repetitive Danish raids, murders and invasions in England. Canute then married Queen Emma of Normandy, who was the widow of Æthelred II. The young man does the same thing to Liv, his best friend and lover, when she in gravely injured on the battlefield. It didn’t last long, as Magnus died quickly after and King Harald finally became the sole King of Norway. According to this saga, Freydís is the illegitimate daughter of Erik the Red. Yes, Freydís was a strong Viking warrior, and the sister of Leif Erickson, children of Erik the Red (who was the founder of the first European installment on Greenland). In fact, he is known to be the first European to set foot in North America, c.1000 CE. Creator Jeb Stuart never hid away from the fact that, though this show requires a huge amount of research (with the help of Vikings history specialists working on the show), it was also his job, as a storyteller, to fill in the gaps, to mix up the dates and the characters' relationships in order to deliver a comprehensible and entertaining story to the audience.

'Vikings: Valhalla' Character: Freydis, Explained: What Happened ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

Freydis knew her mission in life from the first season of "Vikings: Valhalla," but it became even more clear to her in the second season when she found out.

Harald, who had also witnessed everything in front of his eyes, knew that Freydis was not lying, as he had seen the cross that Gunnar had carved on her back, symbolizing that she had been converted to Christianity. Queen Elfgifu was elated to find that her son was alive, and that is why she promised that Kattegat would try to maintain peace at all costs. That is why he took her son to show the people that they still had somebody to look up to. In season 3 of “Vikings: Valhalla,” we would probably get to witness what role she has to play once Harald comes back from Constantinople with an army to fight for his rights. Estrid had seen Freydis performing a ritual, and she had realized that she had an immense amount of faith in her gods. She was dutiful towards her cause, and she believed that the divine light would always guide her in the right direction. Freydis was met with another challenge when Olaf arrived on the shores of Jomsborg with his fleet of ships. It was probably the last pagan holdout in the region, and she knew that she would stay there and join the cause of her people. On her way to Uppsala, Freydis had to face a lot of lethal challenges as she was attacked by a berserker who used to hunt pagans traveling to Uppsala. She wasn’t aware that King Canute had asked all the Vikings to join forces and fight for their cause. Freydis was called the keeper of the faith, and she took upon that responsibility with all honesty. When Freydis Eriksdotter first arrived at Kattegat, she had no clue about King Athelred’s “Viking problem” or how he had mercilessly butchered the Vikings living in Danelaw.
